two weeks later
Gray skies, wet shoes, slightly broken black umbrellas: rain in New York. Alex turned his gaze back to his steaming mug of tea, reached out and checked his cell phone again. Still no text message, no missed call.
“Honey, you want something to eat too?” The waiter was at his side.
“No, thanks. Just the check.” The wind slapped rain against the café window.
“There’s no rush, baby. Finish your tea. You want more hot water?”
Alex smiled. “Yeah, thanks.” He checked his phone again. Still nothing.
The waiter poured his hot water then set another mug on the table and sat down. “Rainy days and Mondays,” he sighed. “So are you waiting for some one? I’m Chad.”
“Alex. And kind of.”
“Boyfriend?”
“If I’m lucky. He said he’d try to call this morning.” Alex checked his phone again.
“ Ahh, you’ve got it bad already.” Chad swirled his tea with a smile.
“How can you tell?
“You’ve checked your cell phone five times in fifteen minutes.” They both laughed.
“Yeah, I guess I do.”
“How long have you known him?”
“It’s been two weeks since we, well you know, but we went to the same high school.”
Chad cocked an eyebrow, “And that was, what, five years ago?”
Alex chuckled into is tea. “Almost six…..teen.”
“Damn, honey, you look good. Where’d you run into him?
“At my ex-boyfriend’s cousin’s bar in Brooklyn.”
“What?”
“It’s complicated. I bartend sometimes near where we grew up and he has been coming in for a couple months. Funny thing is, I always thought Mack was straight.”
“Mack.” Chad drew out the syllable. “Sounds straight.”
“I know, but then…” Alex blushed.
Chad clapped is hands. “Look at that blush! Must have been great.”
Alex’s blush deepened.
“That’s answer enough for me.” They both laughed.
Alex’s phone buzzed and they both looked at it. “It’s Mack.” Then into the phone, “Hey”
Chad disappeared into the back.
“Hey yourself,” Mack said. “You at home warm and dry?”
“No. I’m having tea around the corner from my apartment. I miss the snow.” Alex took a deep breath. “Can you join me?”
“Sure, but I’m twenty minutes away.”
“That’s o.k. I just got here.”
“O.k. See you in a little while.”
Alex gave Mack the address and disconnected. Chad reappeared from the back. “Honey, you have really perked up this rainy Monday morning.”
“Thanks for letting me hang out.”
“Does it look like I need the table?” Chad did a dramatic look around the empty café. He set two new mugs on the table and poured after he sat. “Besides, my curiosity is killing me. I gotta see the man that produced that blush.” He winked. “And this round is caffeine free herbal. You’ll want to be able to sit still when the legendary Mack arrives.”
