Chapter Two
Chapter 2
Raine cracked her neck of out habit, sighing heavily while she stared at her project. He wasn’t giving any information that she needed to know, and it was…rather irritating. Slowly, Raine walked up to the beaten, and bloody mess of a man and took his chin in her hand, tilting her head to the side to look at him.
“Where are the documents?” she asked politely.
The man grunted, refusing to respond. He weakly jerked his arms, trying to get out of his binds, but obviously failed at doing so. His wrists were bloody and raw from the metal shackles rubbing against his flesh and his fingernails were rather dirty. He was mess, and the sight made Raine grin. She had been questioning this man for two days now, and he was a good little secret keeper, not telling her anything. If he didn’t start talking soon though, she would have to play dirty. Not that she minded.
“If you don’t tell me where the documents are, I’m afraid I’ll have to resort to the hard way.” Raine sighed, leaning back against a table with several daggers, and implements.
“Fuck you.” the man grunted. He was an American, and decidedly…stupid.
Raine cocked her hand back and lashed it out, her long, sharp fingernails swiping at his cheek, leaving behind four angry red scratches. “If you don’t tell me where the documents are, I’ll cut off your bits and shove them down your bloody throat, you sodding prick!” she hissed.
“Raine.” a deep voice interrupted the silence followed by her threat.
Raine grinned, turning around to see Shae leaning in the doorway, “Mr. Hayes.” she smiled, “I thought I heard of your return last night.” her eyes glinted with suggestion.
Shae chuckled deeply, “Julian just received word from The Council that your documents have been recovered.”
Raine’s face fell, “They’ve been recovered?” she sighed, looking back at the man barely alive and chained to the stone wall. “Oh blast, looks like I’ve made a mess.”
Shae smirked, looking over at the man, and picked up a file off the table, opening it with a bored expression, “Sam Thompson…American…works in the government.” he ticked off, sighing softly, “Wife and three kids. How are the kids?” he glanced up at the man, his brow raised slightly.
Raine chuckled lightly, “You need to feed, Mr. Hayes.” she motioned to the man, who gasped softly.
Shae shook his head, “I’ll feed later.” he said quietly, “I wanted to talk to you about Angelique. I’m worried for her and she wont listen to me.”
“Does she listen to anyone?” Raine chuckled, unlocking the man’s shackles. He fell to the ground in a heap of a panting, bloodied mess. She grabbed Mr. Sam Thompson by the back of the neck, pulling him easily to his feet, “So sorry about that, Mr. Thompson,” she said briskly, throwing the man with less than perfect grace into an iron-barred cage, “I’ll have someone come take care of you in the morning.”
“Can we talk in your office, then?” Shae, gestured towards a battered wooden door.
Raine grinned, “Of course, Mr. Hayes.”
The two Vampyr’s made their way into Raine’s dark office, lined with shelves upon shelves of bookcases and several cabinets where she kept her important ‘target’ records. It smelled of musky book pages and a constant lingering of death -it smelled like Raine.
“I think you should call for Caleb.” Shae said quietly, leaning back of Raine’s desk.
Raine took a seat in a chair in front of Shae, seated in a much lady-like fashion and sighed softly, “It will cause a lot of problems.”
“Do we have another choice? Caleb is her Sire, surly he can do something.” Shae shrugged, his head hanging slightly in defeat, “I don’t know how to get through to her, Raine.” his voice was low.
Raine stood, framing Shae’s face with her small hands, and looked into his blue eyes with her dark ones, “She can only fix herself.” she whispered. “If you think it will help, I will call for Caleb.”
Shae nodded, his lips pursing slightly, “I cannot think of anything else to do.”
Angelique sighed softly, turning the page in the book she was reading. Shae had gone to speak with Raine about something, so she had decided to go to the library on the second floor to re-read a book. She had read every single book in that library. It was packed with bookcases and shelves, some books even piled up on the floor in corners. Papers were scattered over a large table in the center of the room, but it was comfortable. Especially in the large wing-backed chair next to the fireplace.
A small smile formed on her lips as she thought of Shae’s return home. They had made love until they couldn’t think or move anymore, landing in a hot, sweaty mess under the sheets, their naked bodies pressed together as Shae wrapped his strong arms around her, holding on tightly through their slumber.
It was surreal, that Shae had come back to her and it seemed as if he had never left. They picked up where they left off. It was almost as if he had never left that note for her on his pillow before he left. Angelique bit her bottom lip in thought, looking at the darkened windows. Dusk wouldn’t come until hours later, and she was itching to get out into the courtyard, or forest.
-Angel- a dark voice cut through her thoughts softly, echoing slightly.
Angelique closed her eyes, closing the book sharply, “Yes?” she whispered.
-I wish speak with you- the echoed, dark voice replied, -preferably in physical means-
“Caleb, cant you speak with me now?” Angelique whispered back hurriedly, shoving the book back in its spot on the shelf, “You know I hate when you force yourself into my mind like this.”
-I will arrive in two days, Angel-
“Caleb!” Angelique sighed heavily, running a hand through her hair. There was no reply, so she clenched her eyes together tightly, taking a deep, unneeded breath, “So difficult.”
Humming lightly, Angelique moved around the library, turning the record player on. She closed her eyes, a small smile forming on her lips as she listened to the soft, soothing music that came from the record. Sometimes Raine would listen to this record as she was working, but Angelique tried not to think of that because this was her favorite, nevertheless. Slowly, her muscles eased and relaxed, as she leaned back against the large wooden table.
When Raine and she were little girls, they use to dance around their bedroom while singing incoherent songs about the sky and flowers in their mothers garden. They were completely different now, compared to their mortal selves then -when they were reborn, their physical selves even changed, along with their names. No one could really figure it out, but Caleb had mentioned something about a prophecy…Angelique never paid attention to talks about a prophecy, since it was never written down. It was a rumor.
“Daydreaming?”
Angelique looked towards the door, where Julian stood. Such a hansom man, in that fallen angel sort of way. You would never assume he was a savage Vampyr at first glance, mainly because he only involved himself in conflict when needed. And he looked so completely innocent, it was a bit unnerving. But once beings met Raine, and found that they were lovers to the end, they thought twice about Julian.
“There is nothing else to do.” Angelique shrugged gently.
Julian chuckled, leaning against the table next to Angelique, “What about Shae?” he smirked.
“You are so crude, Julian Caballero.” she chuckled, shaking her head.
Julian laughed deeply, shrugging his shoulders, “I would never survive with Raine is I wasn’t-” he explained before going rigid. Slowly, he pressed his fingertips to his temple and grunted deeply, his brows drawing together tightly.
“Julian?” Angelique gasped, placing a hand on his shoulder. She knew what was happening, but had only witnessed a premonition twice before. Apparently they were very painful.
Julian dropped to his knees, growling loudly as he gripped the sides of his head, doubling over. His breathing came out ragged, “Get Raine.” he ground out, obviously trying to control the pain.
Angelique nodded, dashing out of the library to the stairs, where she looked down to the first floor, and yelled as loud as she could, “Raine!”
The reply was immediate. Raine was already dashing up the stairs to the library, Shae hot on her trail, he took Angelique’s hand in his own as they rushed towards the library to find Raine kneeling in front of Julian, her hands covering his on either side of his head as she chanted softly, reassuring words. A cold sweat had appeared on Julian’s forehead as he breathed heavily, his body shaking with tremors. Angelique gasped, gripping Shae’s hand tightly as he wrapped an arm around her, kissing the top of her head, letting her know it was alright. Angelique hated seeing any being in pain.
“Adalyn.” Julian ground out, “New moon.” he panted, a loud yell erupting from his mouth as he flung himself back into the wooden table, knocking his head roughly against the edge. His breathing stayed ragged as he bit down roughly on his lip, a trickle of blood running down his chin.
“Stay with me, love.” Raine said quietly, brushing his hair out of his face, “Stay with my voice.”
Julian grunted harshly, “Adalyn. New moon. Wolves.” he chanted over and over again.
Angelique looked to Shae, “She’s gotten herself involved with wolves.”
Shae sighed heavily, shaking his head, “The new moon is in two days time.”
------
Angelique and Raine Oleander, who used to be known as Violet and Marguerite Oleander, were mortally born to a very upstanding, and wealthy family in the 1700’s, along with their two younger sisters, Adalyn and Sarah, and small brother, Joseph. Their father was a judge. When Violet (Angelique) was nineteen, and Marguerite (Raine) was seventeen, they were taken away in the dead of night by a rogue gang of Vampyr, set out to make things right in the Vampyr ‘government’, so to speak.
Among these rogues, was Caleb, who took it upon himself to turn the feisty, hell-bent Violet. After Violet was turned, Orrin the Damned, leader of the gang of rogues, took Marguerite as his own daughter, seeing some deep-seeded fire behind those sweet, and calm eyes. When the sisters were reborn, they changed completely -almost like they switched souls.
Whenever mortals are reborn, they are overcome with a insatiable bloodlust, and kill whoever and whatever are in their path. Angelique and Raine returned home. The Oleander family ceased to exist on the night of November 12, 1729. Every family member; Judge Oleander, Mrs. Oleander, Sarah, Joseph…everyone, even the maids, gardeners and other servants. Except for thirteen year old Adalyn -she had escaped somehow.
When Adalyn turned twenty years old, she had conned a forsaken Vampyr into turning her, in order to avenge her family and other loved ones.
It had been two hundred forty seven years, and Adalyn had battled with Raine and Angelique a total of three times, all of which had ended in wounds and a broken soul for poor Adalyn, who despised being Vampyr, and quickly slay any who crossed her path. She fed upon the blood of animals and only that. And apparently, she was planning on paying Raine and Angelique a little visit in two nights time, with Wolves. She was planning on raiding the old Sholtz mansion the same night that Caleb would be there to speak with Angelique.
Caleb would not be pleased.
------
Raine pressed herself close to Julian, kissing his temple softly, as he quivered still. The pain of a premonition lasted for hours sometimes, and Julian was coming down quickly from it, sending his nerves into a slight shock. He buried himself under the blankets of their bed and sighed heavily, trying desperately to relax his tightened and strained muscles.
“Sometimes I curse myself for this.” Raine whispered softly, wrapping her arm around his middle.
Julian grunted quietly, “Don’t, my love.” his voice rasped in an unusually rough manner, “It is not your fault.”
“I made you this.” Raine whispered back, “If it weren’t for me losing myself in you-”
“Then it is my fault.” Julian coughed softly, a grin spreading over his mouth as he turned into her, feeling better by the moments passing. He ran his hand from her thigh, up to Raine’s ribcage, burying his face in the crook of her neck, where he planted a soft kiss, “Blame me for being irresistible.”
Raine chuckled lightly, “And humble.” she added, gently catching her bottom lip between her teeth as Julian scraped his sharpened canine teeth against her skin.
“Darling,” Julian smirked, his hand cupping her breast gently, “I am many things…humble is not one.”
Raine let out a slow breath, arching her back into his touch and smiled, “You are still recovering.” she reminded Julian, who was kissing and licking at the hypersensitive spot on her neck. Raine sipped a hand into Julian’s hair, feeling the soft texture rub between her fingers.
Julian moved his body over Raine’s, pressing his thigh between hers, making Raine moan softly, “This is the only remedy I’m in need of.” he said huskily against her neck. As powerful and in control as Raine was, behind closed doors, she belonged to no one but Julian.
Raine quivered, wrapping her arms around Julian’s shoulders and her legs around his hips, grinning when Julian grunted softly and bucked his hips into her, making himself press against her center. “Far be it from me to give you what you need.” she whimpered as she felt Julian’s teeth sink into the soft flesh of her shoulder slowly.
