Friends Forever

“I’m never covering for you ever again.” Steph was waiting for me at my locker when I returned to school the next day.

“Why what happened?” I entered my combination and wrestled the door open for my books.

“My mom grounded me for two days, she says she’s not going to be liable for my friends anymore.” her voice was snide and annoyed.

“I’m sorry, it was urgent.” I grabbed my Chemistry book out of my locker and slammed it shut.

“What was so important, and how come Edward asked me to cover for you? I thought I was your best friend, why haven you been spending more time with my boyfriend?”

“Uh, maybe because we both work at the same place. There was a last minute convention we had to go to.” I replied snootily.

“I didn’t know telemarketers had conventions!”

“Well, you do now, congratulations.’

“I want to know the truth,” Stephanie said adamantly, her tiny face was worn with worry.

“Don’t give me that look,” I sighed, “You’ll get wrinkles, and if you start getting wrinkles you won’t have modeling gigs anymore. I’m telling you there is nothing going on between Edward and I.”

“Promise?”

“Of course, we’ve been best friends since the fourth grade, you really think I’d actually do that to you?”

“No, I guess not.” she shrugged, “Oh, and there was another reason I came by your locker…” she began slowly. I looked at her with narrow, curious eyes and waited for her to continue. “Jennifer Coolidge is looking for you and she looks pretty angry.”

“Jennifer Coolidge?” I repeated, “What does she want?” Jennifer Coolidge is the biggest bitch of all, she was noted as being the wicked witch of East high on every bathroom wall. Every girl feared her, and so did most boys. I didn’t know what she wanted with me, I couldn’t think of anything I could have done wrong to anger her.

“I don’t know,” Stephanie replied nonchalantly, “She was talking about Prom though.”

“Oh crap,” I shook my head, “You don’t think Girlzilla had her heart set on Travis, do you?”

“Travis?” Steph asked, “Why, you’re not going to Prom with him are you?”

“He asked me, I couldn’t say ‘no!’” I argued, “Why?”

“First of all, why hadn’t you told me? Secondly, didn’t you know they had been ‘talking’ to each other; well, according to Jennifer.”

“Hey, he barely asked me last Friday and I hadn’t seen you since. Wait, what do you mean Jennifer and Travis are dating? Who would go near her?”

“Obviously him if he’s been leading her to believe they were going to Prom together.”

“I need to talk to Travis so he can straighten this out,” I bit my lip worryingly, “before that monster eats me up alive.”

I breezed through my first four classes before I had the chance to talk to Travis during lunch. I was afraid I’d run into Jennifer and she’d hand my ass to me in front of the entire high school populous as I speedily walked toward the Senior Glen where he hung out with the rest of his wrestling buddies. I had to wait a couple of minutes until he came, he was a little shocked to see me there standing indignantly.

“Hey, what’s up?” he asked curiously as he walked over to where I stood.

“Why the heck is Jennifer Coolidge after me?” I snapped, I was carefully scanning the premises for the witch, I knew she’d come over and pick her own bones with the both of us.

“Jennifer Coolidge?” he laughed, “Why, did she say something to you?”

“No, but word is going around that she’s looking to kick my ass. Supposedly, I stole you away from her, is that true? Were you going to take her to Prom?”

“Are you serious?” he laughed again, “Why would I take that heifer to Prom?”

“Why does she think that then? There has to be a reason, all bets are off.” I snapped, “I don’t want to get beat up because of some stupid misunderstanding.”

“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to her,” Already I could tell he was beginning to get aggravated. There was one warning that was spread on campus about Travis… and that was to never piss him off-regardless of your sex.

“Good, do it soon because I don’t want to keep looking out for her from the corners of my eyes.”

“I’ve got it under control,” he assured me, “All you need to worry about is looking pretty for Prom.”

“Alright, I guess.” I shrugged, I started to leave, but his voice pulled me back.

“Ay, tell me if she tries to give you grief, I’ll take care of it.” His toothy white smile was reassuring, like a car salesmen or something. I didn’t trust Travis, that was for sure, but he was a pretty nice guy from what I knew of him to be.

“Wah-Wah!” Edwards lips zoomed past my ear as I headed toward our lunch hangout.

“Hello, hello!” I grinned as I looked up at him. “What’s up?”

“Nothing much,” he cocked his head, “Steph has been acting a little strange lately, did she tell you anything?” I knew exactly what he had been referring to, but I wasn’t sure if I should tell him or not. Not only were her absurd accusations embarrassing, but utterly untrue.

I shrugged, I didn’t know a better answer to supply him with. “Maybe she’s on her period?”

“I was thinking that, actually,” he sheepishly admitted, “but she’s never been like this.”

“Women are complicated.”

“I agree, why can’t they all be like you?” he laughed.

“What’s that supposed to mean?” I gasped jokingly as I punched his forearm.

“It’s a good thing, It’s a good thing.” Nothing was cuter than hearing him giggle. He was so innocent, like a little Christian angel… who happened to be a part time assassin. I would have given the world to him, if he had only shared my hidden feelings.

I was greatly envious of Stephanie who had Edward at her disposal. She mistreated him for the two years they had been together, but he was blind to see that there was something, or rather someone waiting for him just beyond the horizon. I could have offered him the love he deserved, but I knew it was close to impossible to obtain his heart. He was already devoted to her and they had plans for engagement shortly after she graduates, or so she would go on about. Sometimes she would blather on about their perfect relationship and I knew it was her rouse to make me and the group of girls who hung around her jealous. We all were, it wasn’t rocket science to figure that one out.

The only attribute I could find the least bit appealing on Stephanie was that she was thin and cute. She wasn’t gorgeous or sexy, but she had the generic American girl look that modeling agencies looked for. I don’t know what Edward saw in her, I never had the guts to ask either, but that question always loomed over the harbor.

“Hey guys,” I waved at the girls who were congregated in a circle around empty space. They all turned around and greeted the both of us as we joined them.

“Did Brittany breath her fire of doom, yet?” Sydney asked, taking a bite out of her pizza. Sydney barely moved here last year and yet she had already made chums with nearly the entire school. She was friendly and outgoing, and although she was a bit on the plumper side guys still seemed to be interested. I liked hanging out with Sydney, she was could make anybody laugh though I was a bit disapproving of her frivolous lifestyle involving drugs and alcohol. Our friend Lindsey was just the same, except more quieter and reserved. She listened to the same retro bands I listened to so we always had something to talk about.

“No, thankfully.” I shook my head as I reached into my tote bag for my Vitamin Water. “I don’t know what’s her beef, anyway.”

“Well, you know her and Travis had a thing going on.” Stephanie interjected snidely.

“Travis?” the girls repeated.

“First of all, Travis NEVER had a thing with her, and secondly YES, if you hadn’t heard already I’m going to Prom with Travis Hanes!” There was a slew of girly giggles and awes after my statement as I kept my eyes intent on Steph’s growing red face.

“That’s cute,” Sydney replied, “He’s such a hottie. I just don’t know what Brit’s problem is, I’ve never even seen them together.”

“Neither have I, that girl is tripping.” Shonda snapped, her fingers “If that skank be up in yo’ grill, you best recognize I got yo’ back.” Shonda is the only friend of mine that was of color. She’s a feisty and vivacious chick who never took grief from anybody, not even her teachers. I couldn’t say I respected that, but I could always depend on her to back me up in any fight. I didn’t like the morals of any of my friends, to tell you the truth. In my opinion they were all disrespectful, promiscuous whores, but I loved them to death. I didn’t let my personal bias affect my judgment of those with different morals than my own. Personally, I never toyed around with the idea of boyfriends, they were all after one thing, one thing I wasn’t willing to provide. I wasn’t saving myself for marriage or anything, but I was going to wait for the right guy, and I already had my heard set on a certain someone.

“Thanks, Shonda.” I smiled, “Travis said he’d take care of it.”

“Ooh,” Rita and Carrie said in unison, in a very rehearsed fashion.

“Shut it, I don’t even want to go to Prom.”

“Then why did you agree to go with him?” Stephanie asked, she had her arm around Edward’s waist lovingly squeezing him to her side.

“Well,” I shrugged, “I think he’s a good guy and I would probably regret not going anyway.” I purposely left out the part where he held my phone for ransom, which was the real deal breaker for me.

“Yes, yes you would!” Rita agreed, “I can’t wait till prom, it’s going to be so fun! Did you guys already get your tickets?”

“They go on sale after school today,” Stephanie replied, “You’d think they’d sell them a month earlier, why would they sell it a couple of days before? So there would be mad , crazy lines?”

“This school doesn’t know how to run anything.” I whined, “Like seriously, I don’t even know how graduation is going to turn out.”

“Oh yeah, You, Edward and Shonda are graduating this year!” Sydney clapped, “We’re totally going to miss you guys!”

“Yeah,” Lindsay agreed, “You bitches better come and visit from time to time.”

“Of course,” I nodded, “and we’re still going to hang out every Friday!”

“Oh hey, Ava, do you think you’d be able to come over today?” Stephanie asked me once the lunch bell had rang and all the girls began to disassemble.

“Why?” I turned around, her and Edward had already broken apart and were reaching for their backpacks.

“I need help on what shoes to wear for Prom, and please tell me you’ll do my hair and make-up?”

“Stephanie,” I whined, “I thought you were grounded?”

“I am, my mother didn’t say anything about friends coming over, I just can’t go out.”

“Fine.” I rolled my eyes, “But I don’t have any avocado green shadow in my make-up box.”

“How did you know what color my dress was?”

“Edward and I had a lot of free time during that convention,” I began, but before I could continue she cute me off-

“I’m sure you two occupied your time wisely.”

“No,” I countered, “We were bored the whole time. All he kept talking about was how beautiful you looked in your dress and how excited he was to be taking the prettiest girl in the whole entire school to Prom.” I lied.

“He hasn’t seen me in my dress yet.” she cocked her eyebrow, “Wait, maybe. I sent him a picture through my phone.”

“Yeah, he couldn’t stop looking at it, he even showed me. It’s such a pretty dress, I must say.” The lies continued to spew from my lips, I never thought I’d be so good at something so evil.

“Aw, thanks,” she gushed, “It took me forever to find it. The color is just so beautiful.”

“Yes, I know.” I nodded with a plastered grin on my face, “Well, I got to get to English now, I’ll meet you in front of the Senior Glen after school.”
