Chapter 2: The Youkai

Chikyu ran on the roof trying to find a place she could hide. It was a bare building with not much on it so this proved to be difficult. Around the edge of the roof was a small wall, seeing this was the only thing that would hide her, Chikyu crouched down behind it. She could hear the youkai and Taiyõ fighting. She wondered how it was possible for a guy like Taiyõ to fight a demon. From the old myths she was been told that youkai where a lot stronger then human. A human didn’t stand a chance against one and yet Taiyõ was fighting one. Or at least he said he would and it sounded like that. He told her not to look and she hadn’t done that yet either.

Below her the sounds of a fight continued. Chikyu heard things crashing, the sounds made her shiver. She also heard screams either belonging to Taiyõ or the youkai.

*It appears that Taiyõ isn’t a normal guy,* She thought to herself. If he had been he wouldn’t be able to pick her up and run with her like that. His speed and strength is incredible and now he fighting a demon. She heard something collapse, it sounded like a wall. Curious about what was happening down on the ground she tried to take a peek from over the wall.

*I shouldn’t be doing this he told me not to look,* She scolded herself. *But what does he expect me to do? Just sit around and wait?! What if he looses and I don’t know it. I’ll be a sitting duck if that youkai comes after me again.*

Slowly she rose a bit from the place she was crouching down. Her hands grabbed the edge of the small wall to keep herself steady. As she rose a little higher she was able to look down. What she saw was unbelievable. Taiyõ and the youkai where facing each other. Both where panting (for as far as youkai do that) and worn out from their fight. They started to walk around one another, both keeping their eye at their opponent. The youkai was flexing his enormous claws, there was blood on them. On the other side stood Taiyõ, his clothes where battered from the fight. His hands where made into fists, around his fists there was a red glow. Then Taiyõ charged at the youkai, he took his right arm back and then tried to slam his right fist into the youkai. The youkai evaded the fist and tried to charge Taiyõ from the left. Taiyõ had probably anticipated this as he was able to jump out of reach of the demons claw.

“Get lost.” Taiyõ was panting but he didn’t seem to be exhausted yet. The youkai facing him laughed. “Why would I do that?” A grin played on the demon’s face. “I’m fighting a human. There is no reason for me to get lost like you’re telling me to. You are no match for me.”

“If I’m no match for you then why am I still standing. You could’ve killed me sooner if that was the case.” Taiyõ smirked to the demon. “But even though I’m a mere human, as you say, you haven’t succeeded in doing that yet.”

“Hold your tongue boy. If I want to I could kill you right away but I like to play with my prey before I kill it.” The youkai laughed out loud. “What’s your business here anyway? Do you know this human girl?”

“Hmpf, there is no need for you to know. All you need to know is that this is as far as you’ll be going. There will be no more killing or eating humans for you from this night on. Why do you want that girl anyway?” Taiyõ made his hands into fists again. The youkai’s face looked grim again. Before Taiyõ could blink the youkai was attacking again. He tried to evade it but was just a second to late. The claw of the youkai hit his left shoulder. “You know why I want this girl, brat. Don’t pretend you don’t know that. It’s the same reason why I will be eating you at the end of this fight.” The youkai whispered so soft that Taiyõ was barely able to hear.

On the roof Chikyu was still watching the fight with fear. She had seen them standing still and it looked like they where talking. But what could a human and a youkai have to talk about? And then just when didn’t expect it the youkai attacked again. She was just able to smother a scream as the youkai hit Taiyõ on his shoulder. Both the youkai and Taiyõ looked like they froze for a single second. Then Taiyõ turned around in rage. The glow around his wrist like before seemed to ignite. Two red flames were now surrounding his fists, both blazing red and yellow. The youkai didn’t seem to have expected this as he watch the boy in surprise. Taiyõ took his chance and hit the youkai straight in the chest. The youkai roared in pain from both the impact and the heat of Taiyõ’s fist. He leaped away as Taiyõ was about to slam his other fist in the youkai as well. Then the youkai charged back and tried to attacked Taiyõ back. The two men (weren’t they?) where charging attacks back and forth on each other. Both trying to gain the upper hand as both of them wanted to win. But after Taiyõ’s outburst of flames it seemed he had the upper hand in the fight. The youkai noticed this as well and tried to gain control of the fight again.

Then the youkai turned around. And before either Taiyõ or Chikyu knew it he came straight to the building on which Chikyu was hiding. It happened so fast that Chikyu had no time to react. Taiyõ on the other hand reacted as fast as he could. As the youkai slammed his claw into the side of the building Taiyõ jumped after him and tried to attack him from the side. Because of this the youkai was forced to stop his attack, and he leaped back onto the ground.

It had been to late. As the boy and the youkai stood on the ground, facing each other again, the little wall, behind which Chikyu had been hiding, cracked and fell down to the ground. Chikyu, not prepared for this, lost her balance. She screamed. Because she had been holding the edge of the wall she started to fall down after it. In panic she turned around and was just able to get hold of another piece of wall. This piece was still connected to the building with iron bars, but it was hanging over the edge of the building.

Chikyu was now dangling over the edge of the building merely able to hold on. Above her she could hear the remains of the wall crumble. With all her might she tried to hold on.

“Hold on!” Taiyõ’s voice came from somewhere beneath her. “I’m trying! But I don’t think I can.” Chikyu sounded terrified. “You have to, I’ll get there as soon as I can.” Taiyõ sounded distracted. The next thing she could hear was someone slamming into something.

“I’m slipping!” Chikyu tried to get a better hold on the piece of concrete. She got some crumbled pieces in her face. As she tried to shake them from her eyes she slipped a bit more. Chikyu closed her eyes and the only thing she could think of was holding on. Something strange happened. She felt strangely warm and something was wrapping her wrists. To her they felt like lifelines, making it easier to hold on.

She didn’t dare to open her eyes and look what those things where. All she knew was to hold on.

“You’ll pay for that!” Something in Taiyõ’s angry voice made the youkai feel uncomfortable. That moment of weakness was all Taiyõ needed. He rushed towards the youkai and landed his blazing fist on the youkai’s face. The burning smell of the, now burned, face was terrible. The youkai lost his sight and was just hitting around himself unable to do something else. Taiyõ now didn’t waste any time. With the fire around his fist he set fire to the demon’s clothes on as many places as he could, hitting the youkai as hard as he could in the meantime. Assured that the demon now was about to die by the flames he took of towards the roof.

On the rooftop he ran towards the collapsed wall. He looked for something to hold so he could bend over to get Chikyu. As he took a step forward he heard the wall crumble further underneath his feet. The piece of wall Chikyu was holding onto was about to fall down to the ground. Taiyõ grabbed a thick vine which seemed to be embedded into the roof of the building. As he heard the wall crumble further he jumped down to get Chikyu.

The next moment the remaining of the wall fell down to the ground. Taiyõ was dangling in the air holding on to the vine with one hand, in his other arm he held Chikyu. She held onto him with all she could, still in shock from the fact that if he had been a second later she would’ve fallen down to the ground.

“Can you hold onto me?” Taiyõ asked Chikyu. “H-hai, I think I can,” she replied to him. He lifted her a bit higher so she could get her arms around his neck. With his other hand now free he grabbed the vine and started climbing up. When he got on top of the roof he put Chikyu down. She shrunk down on her knees, trembling from what she just had experienced. Then she looked at her hands, around her wrist there where vines. As she looked around she saw several vines come out of the roof.

With a shock she returned to her senses as Taiyõ shredded the vines from her wrist. “Daijoubu ka?” He asked her. “H-hai I think I am.” Chikyu stuttered back still confused from everything she had seen. “Great now get on my back,” as Taiyõ said that he turned his back to her and crouched down a bit, enough to enable her to climb on his back.

“Nan-nani? Chikyu looked at him in surprise. “On your back?? What? Why? I can stand on my feet I’m fine honto.”

“It’s not because you can’t walk, and it’s not because I like it either. It’s just that I can’t let you go home alone you’ll probably get yourself into trouble again. And the fastest way to get you back home is by carrying you on my back.” His face looked irritated as he explained it.

“Demo, how will that get me there faster?”

“Haven’t you paid attention? Apparently you haven’t noticed yet, but I’m stronger then the average human. And I’ve already carried you while running and jumping. And the only reason why I want you on my back is because that’s a little bit more comfortable. Besides I won’t have to look at you that way. Now get on.”

A little reluctant Chikyu climbed on and before she could get a good grip on Taiyõ’s shoulders he took off. With great leaps he went in the direction of Chikyu’s house and within 10 minutes they where at the gate of the shrine grounds. Taiyõ crouched down again, this time so Chikyu could get off.

Chikyu set foot on solid ground after a terrifying ride on the back of a guy, she thought was just a regular guy. But he appeared to be well, she wasn’t really sure what he was after what see had seen this evening and it scared her. She saw him standing tall again and she took a few steps back.

“Ok listen,” Taiyõ started “This has never happened. Do not come to me at school and do not ask questions about it. It’s no use I won’t answer. Just forget about this evening.” As he turned around Chikyu stepped forward and grabbed his hand. “Matte kudasai! I can’t pretend nothing has happened. Who was this youkai guy? And how can you jump like that? And..”

”Forget it !!!” and with that Taiyõ took off.

For a second Chikyu stood frozen. Then she got to her senses and she started to walk to the front door. “Tadaima” she said as she entered the house. Her mother appeared from a door leading to the living room. “Chikyu there you are. We where wondering where you were. I expected you home for diner.”

“Ahh Gomene. I meant to get home for diner but after school I went to the library and well I kinda forgot time. And when I went home I met some people I know and I got stuck again. I would have called but I left my phone home this morning.” Chikyu apologized to her mother.

“Chikyu what happened to you? Your clothes are all dirty and you got something grey on your face. Daijoubu?” Her mothers voice sounded worried.

“Don’t worry nothing happened to me I’m fine. I just tripped it’s pretty dark outside I missed a rock on the ground it was just a stupid accident.” trying to cover up what happened, Chikyu tried to think of a acceptable excuse. As she was trying to be as convincing as possible a loud rumble came from her stomach. “Ehh mom? Do you have something left to eat?”
