Birthday Present

CHAPTER 2:

(7 years later)

As he walked back and forth across the blue hospital floor, many doctors and nurses swiftly passed by the nerve-wrecked Timothy. He was wearing his green pajama bottoms with a white shirt and black jacket. The time was late at night, and his wife of 6 years, Dawn, was in labor with their child.

The two have tried hard to get pregnant. Many times they have failed, but 9 months ago, Timothy was proud when Dawn walked through their house with a bright smile on her face. She had tears streaming down her eyes, and was happily telling Timothy that she was pregnant; pregnant with his baby.

Timothy admitted he was nervous. He hated having to wait. Over three hours have passed since they took Dawn into a delivering room. Timothy wanted to be in there with her, but promised to wait outside until the time was right. That time soon came.

“Mr. Ackley?” Timothy turns to the female doctor, “Mr. Ackley, your wife is about ready to start. Would you like to come in now?”

“Oh yes,” Timothy follows the doctor, “Thank you.”

The two soon came to Dawn’s room. Once they entered, Timothy immediately rushed over to his sweaty wife. She looked in terrible pain, but tried her hardest to smile when she saw Timothy coming over to take her hand.

“You’re here,” Dawn whispers due to her throat being sore.

“Yes honey,” Timothy chuckles, “I’m here.”

“Alright Mrs. Ackley,” the nurse smiles, “It’s time.”

Dawn nods as Timothy helps her into a more relaxing position. He never removes his hand from hers as Dawn begins to push with all her might. She takes in more breaths, and pushes; listening to each step the nurse told her. Soon the pain left Dawn and the atmosphere was filled with one of nature’s many wonderful sounds; a baby’s cry.

She could not believe her eyes. There Dawn saw her baby before her. Her own little baby. Dawn did not want to move her eyes off her baby, but did for a matter of a millisecond as she looked over at Timothy. He was also like her, staring in awe at the being they had created through love.

The nurse smiles over the nude, sticky baby and giggles. “Congratulations you two, it’s a girl.”

As they take the baby girl away to be washed, Dawn leans fully back in the bed. A few more tears escaped her blue eyes. “A girl,” Dawn smiles at Timothy, “We have a girl.”

“Yes,” Timothy smiles at his wife, “And she was gorgeous; you’re gorgeous.”

Dawn nods her head at Timothy. “I love you…”

“I love you, too.”

--

Soon their bundle of joy was wrapped safely in a light pink blanket. The baby rested in Dawn’s arms, and was fast asleep.

“Look at her,” Dawn whispers with a sniff, “Isn’t she beautiful?”

“Yes,” Timothy replies while rubbing Dawn’s messy hair, “She is absolutely pure.”

Dawn turns her eyes to Timothy, and smiles. “I,” Dawn sniffs, “I already came up with a good name, if you want to hear it.”

“Oh yes,” Timothy nods, “What name?”

“Well,” Dawn turns her attention back on the sleeping baby, “How—how about Michelle?”

“Michelle? Hmm,” Timothy looks their baby over, and gives off a soft chuckle, “Yes, I like Michelle.”

Dawn smiles as Timothy gives her a nod of appreciation. “Yes,” Dawn smiles at her baby, “Michelle. Our one and only—Michelle.”

Soon little Michelle begins to move about in her mother’s arms. Dawn smiles as a nurse comes in. “Oh,” the nurse giggles, “It looks like she’s ready to try and drink.”

Dawn nods, and pushes baby Michelle’s pink blanket down a tad. That’s when the two noticed the mark. It rested on the baby’s little stomach, just next to the belly-button. It almost resembled a P. “What in the world is that?”

“Oh nothing to worry about,” the nurse giggles, “It looks like a birthmark to me. It’s nothing harmful.”

The two nodded as little Michelle immediately took in Dawn’s perked nipple. As Michelle drank away, the two parents couldn’t help but think the mark made her even more precious then she already was. They now knew that she was special.

--

“Michelle! Michelle, please come downstairs!”

(8 years later)

“Michelle,” Dawn shouts, “Michelle, please hurry up!”

From above the stairs comes a soft, cute voice, “Coming mommy!”

Timothy walks over to his wife, and wraps his strong arms around her. She stares happily up at him as she melts into his arms. Soon, the two see their young daughter running down the stairs.

“There you are Michelle,” Timothy laughs, “There’s a surprise for you in the kitchen, better go see what it is!”

Michelle rushes off for the kitchen as her parents follow. The girl turns the corner, and gasps. There sat a wonderfully decorated cake. It was shaped like a riding horse, covered in chocolate frosting for the fur, and dark blue frosting making a ribbon over the horse’s mane, which also contained pink and violet flowers. The cake read in white “Happy 8th Birthday Michelle.”

“Ooh mommy,” Michelle stands up on her stool in the kitchen, “Oh daddy, thank you! It looks yummy!”

Michelle adored horses. She’s always had a thing for them, and she took horse riding lessons every weekend. She wanted to grow up and become a grand horse rider or rancher.

“Whoa settle there little horsy,” Timothy laughs as he sets pink candles into the cake, “First we have to sing you happy birthday, and then after that…”

“No daddy” Michelle giggles, “no!”

“Then after that will come 8 tickles of birthday torture!”

Michelle laughs at her father’s stupidity, as does Dawn. Both were given birthday tickle tortures by Timothy every year, and both never once could get out of it.

“Alright now that’s enough,” Dawn giggles, “Let’s sing to the birthday girl.”

Michelle stood there smiling at her cake. She gave off happy giggles as her parents began to sing to her:

“Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday to you,

Happy birthday, dear Michelle,

Happy Birthday to you.”

Closing her eyes, Michelle thinks strongly to make a great wish. She chooses to wish to have a horse of her very own. Blowing the candles, Michelle makes a little mistake on the last one, but once it’s blown out, her parents clap and shout, “Yeah.”

“And now,” Timothy reaches down, “It’s time for the 8 tickles! One!”

Michelle begins to laugh crazily as her dad tickles her, “Two! Three! Four!”

“Daddy,” Michelle’s face goes red, “Daddy!”

“Seven,” Timothy does one final large tickle, “Eight!”

Dawn laughs at her family as she sets some horse paper plates down. She goes to cut the ribbon piece for her daughter, and then dips some vanilla ice cream alongside it. “I love you two…”

--

“So,” Dawn sits beside her daughter, “Did you have a nice birthday?”

“Yeah,” Michelle hugs her new favorite stuffed horse, “It was fun, mommy!”

“That’s good to hear love.” Dawn turns her face away for a moment. She removes a little wrapped gift from underneath her shirt. Whatever the contents was inside, Dawn held it as if it were the most valuable thing in the world. She turns to her daughter, “Michelle, I have one last gift for you. This one, however, is very special.”

“Wow really,” Michelle smiles at the wrapped gift, “Special?”

“Yes,” Dawn smiles at the gift, “When I was your age, my mother gave me a special gift, and asked me to take special care of it. This necklace you see around my neck is that gift, Michelle. I’ve kept it for all these years. My sister, your aunt, she was given a white vase for her gift to put roses in, for she loved roses.” Michelle just stares quizzically at her mother, wondering what could be inside the wrapped box, “So I’m giving this special gift to you, and hope you’ll continue the tradition for when you have a child of your own. Here…”

Michelle carefully took the box and placed it on her lap.

Timothy had come from around the corner, and leaned against the open door. He smiled as his daughter slowly un-wrapped the gift.

Michelle peeked into the box. Something was wrapped in white tissue. Michelle carefully pulled the object from the box, and slowly removed the tissue to find something most remarkable underneath. Michelle gave out a gasp. The gift was a lovely glass carousel horse. The horse itself was white, and had flowers painted on it, along with a golden pole. The horse had a purple-colored saddle, too. The carousel horse was standing on a black platform. “Mommy,” Michelle smiles, “I love it!”

“Now promise me Michelle,” Dawn smiles, “That you’ll care for this with all your heart.”

“Oh I promise,” Michelle goes to sit the horse on her stand, (with the help of Dawn,) “I promise mommy. I’ll always love it!”

Once the carousel horse sat beside her bed, Michelle was given a kiss goodnight by both parents. Soon they shut off Michelle’s main bedroom light before closing the door. The only light shone was that of Michelle’s lily nightlight. Smiling, Michelle held her new stuffed horse as she peeked over at the carousel horse.

“I promise mommy,” Michelle yawns, “I’ll never let anything happen to it.”
