The Park has Eyes

School had been particularly awful that day. It was a Thursday which meant gym class which equaled a half hour of hell and misery.

Dodgeball.

What satanic bastard had come up with such a game? Obviously the creator had been decently liked by his or her peers or they wouldn’t have thought it up. For those lower on the social totem dodgeball resulted in balls to the face and welts. Lots and lots of welts. That evening hadn’t been much of an improvement either. Her mother had been in a particularly bizarre state, and Abi had got off the bus to find her huddled naked in the basement. It had took three hours to coax the woman upstairs, and even longer to get her to eat something.

Abi breathed in the night as she crossed the Burton’s yard on the way to Alan Jackson Park. Upon exiting her house she had felt the day melt away into a memory and her mind return to a stable place. This was how she survived. No matter who teased her at school or how hard her mother beat her, Abi decided her own fate at night. The park was deserted as she gave it the once over. Occasionally Abi would sneak out only to find her spot inhabited by gangbangers or drug dealers, forcing her to wait them out. Deftly she climbed the vine covered granite wall and flung herself off the top, landing without a sound. She could have simply used the public entrance but she found this way more suitable to her tastes. At one time this park must have been beautiful. The stagnate waters of the pond had churned underneath with decorative koi and the cracked pavement gleamed in the sun. Abi made her way to the rusted play structure and took her usual spot in the least questionable swing. Kicking off the ground she gave the swing momentum and gazed up at the smog covered sky. Nothing could be as beautiful or certain as the night sky. No matter what kind of shit Abi experienced it was always there to reassure her. Closing her eyes she concentrated on the ebb and flow of her body to the tune of the creaking swing.

Abi had been on the swing an hour before she slowly realized someone was watching her. Suddenly stopping she cased the park out, squinting to make out hidden figures in the shadows. She couldn’t see them, yet Abi knew someone was there watching her. Oddly she didn’t feel threatened, rather curious as to why someone found viewing her so interesting.
“Hello?” Abi croaked out into the darkness with no reply. Although she did not feel threatened, Abi did feel disturbed. Suddenly she was no longer at home in the deserted park. Slowly Abi got up and retreated to the dilapidated wall she had climbed over only an hour before. Giving one last look back she hoisted herself up and dropped back down into reality.
