Scene One
Scene 1
(An audition room with a table and two chairs set up on stage left and a piano on stage right. TOM and GRANT sit at the table talking over some notes, while CHLOE sits at the piano looking over a piece of sheet music. GIA leads in the actors auditioning for the production)
GRANT (looking up from his notes): It’s about time you all got here. Gia, I assume that this is everyone?
(GIA nods as though she is terrified, but does not speak)
GRANT: Good, then we can finally get this show on the road. As I am sure all of you know, we are looking for exceptionally talented individuals. I will not accept anything less than the absolute best talent this city has to offer. The dance audition will be first, followed by singing and finally acting. You may be dismissed at any time.
TOM: You know, you could have introduced yourself instead of scaring the crap out of all of them.
GRANT: You do things your way, I’ll do things my way. Let’s just get this over with already so we can get out of here. I already need a drink.
(GIA runs out of the room as they continue to speak and comes back a moment later with two plastic cups of water for GRANT and TOM.)
TOM: (muttering) What you need is someone to take that stick…
GRANT: (interrupting him) What were you about to say?
TOM: Nothing, nothing. (smiling at the auditioners and standing up) Let’s just get on with this, shall we? (walks around the table towards the auditioners) I hope you’re all ready to go. We’ll start off with something easy.
(TOM nods to CHLOE who begins to play the piano. He demonstrates a short dance, and then begins to teach it to all of the actors. It quickly becomes obvious that only a few can dance, including ELLA and NORBERT)
GRANT: (standing up and moving towards the exit) If you need me, I’ll be outside… doing whatever it is you do when you excuse yourself to go outside.
(Lights dim as the actors continue to dance, some very badly. CHLOE quits playing and all of the actors exit the stage. GRANT and TOM resume their original places)
