"You know I just love your sense of humor" Kenna said with her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"Well if you didn't think you were invincible...." Alex dropped it right there, he knew he was walking in dangerous territory and was not going to ruin that fragile bond they have. He knew he was the only link to anyone, and he kept her alive.
There was a banging on the front of the clinic doors, Kenna's eyes dart to the backdoor. Alex grabs her arm "I'll take care of it, trust me"
She arched her uninjured brow at him "Just lay back and let me cover you up" he told her as he made sure most of her was covered by the blanket.
The banging became more persistent, with shouts from the other side. "POLICE DEPARTMENT!"
Alex opened the door for them "What's up guys, what can I do for you?"
"There was a bad fire down the street, about eight bodies found inside, have you seen anything or treated anyone with burns or anything?" the officer asked looking past Alex into the clinic. Alex side stepped in front of him blocking the view.
"The only thing I have in the back is a badly beat up woman, boyfriend thought she was cheating so he knocked her around pretty bad" He explained.
The other officer, obviously a rookie and really young, tried to step in stating "Maybe we need to see her and take the report"
"Won't help" the older officer grumbled "Don't waste your time they always bail him out and go back to the SOB anyway, we got better things to do" It took every ounce of Alex's control not to slam his fist into the smug mouth of that cop.
Looking at the young rookie Alex says "I will talk to her tonight, if she changes her mind I'll give you a call Officer...."
"I am Officer James Ballance" he fills in the blank sticking his hand out. Alex accepts the gesture returning “Call me Alex or Doc, I answer to both around here, but hey I gotta get back to her. Sorry I didn't have any information for you." as he closed the door.
Locking the latches, Alex makes sure the door is secure and returns to the exam room, to find it empty. Nothing left of Kenna but bloody gauze and a stained shirt. Raking his hand through his hair and across his face, he let loose a series of curses that would make any sailor proud. "Be safe kiddo" he stated looking out into the night.
"Shit!" Kenna ground out as she tripped entering her apartment, fumbling for the light she is greeted with two green eyes staring back at her with a disapproving meow he jumps down and rubs against her legs for a minute. "Hey there buddy" she grunts as he knocks her off balance. Throwing her stuff in the chair, her phone rings. I am not answering it she growls and walks down the hall to her bathroom. Shucking her clothes off onto the floor, she starts her shower, looking in the mirror she looks at her body. At 5'9" she was not a wilting flower, add to it a body toned through years of training, her face isn't beautiful, but it isn't forgettable either lips a little fuller than she would like and a nose that had been broken once or twice. The most remarkable feature about her is the grey eyes that match an early summer thunderstorm with color and intensity. Pushing back her chin length blonde hair she turned to look at the stitches at her side. The only things that mar her pale skin are the scars, some new, some very old. Turning sideways she sees her back, memories flood her mind to the point where she can't block them out, images of pain, blood and ..."STOP" she shouts pressing her palms into her temples, squeezing her eyes shut as pain shoots through her head from her swollen eye. Kenna steps into the shower, and washes night off of her body. The hot water feels good on her back but stings as it hits all of the scraps and cuts on her body. Wrapping up in her robe, she walks into her room to find a big ball of brown fur stretched out on her bed.
"Hey, hey move that is my spot" the only response was one green eye opening as if to say that is what you think. Kenna lies down on her bed and pushes the cat out of the way with a very vocal protest. "Deal with it you snot" she grumbled. Gingerly laying her throbbing head back she lays down but once again sleep eludes her. Her thoughts go over the night and what went wrong. There weren't suppose to be that many, they weren't suppose to be armed. She can still taste her blood in her mouth were that last thoughts as finally the arms of Morpheus surround her in sleep. She slept for a few hours that night, but woke up to a cold nose on her cheek. Abandoned on her fire escape she found Mutt, left to the elements he was a pathetic little thing, wouldn't see that now looking at him. "Hi buddy, you hungry?" in response she got a very loud purr and a head butt. "Ouch you shithead that hurt!” Kenna sat on the side of the bed a wave of dizziness hit her. Waiting until it passed she stood up and found her feet walking down the hall, jumping on the counter her very large brown cat blocked her access to the coffee pot. She knew the routine; Mutt got fed first then her coffee. There were some benefits to being a writer; she could make her own hours and hideaway for weeks at a time. Picking up her phone she listens to the call that she ignored when she got home, she didn't really need to guess who it was because only two people called her Alex and her editor. Well her editor is rarely up at 2am, so it left Alex. "Hey kiddo, just want to make sure you are okay. Take care of yourself and make sure you watch that wound. You have any problems call me; I'll take care of it. Please let me know you made it home." She took a deep sigh and dialed his number. She got his voicemail, which meant he was either working or asleep. "Just letting you know I am safe. Ummmmmmmmmm yeah and thank for fixing me up again" Even after all this time she didn't understand why he patched her up every time she asked.
Walking down the hall she scooped up her stuff from the bathroom, laying the weapons to the side she gathered the blood soaked clothes and took them to fireplace. Thank goodness it is winter, starting a fire wouldn't look so weird. Once the fire was going full blast she tossed the clothes in and watched the fire consume them. Returning to the bathroom she took her weapons, cleaned them up and put them in the floor safe, making sure it was secure she replaced the floorboards over it. That job done Kenna lays down in bed, Mutt climbs up beside her putting his hindquarters as close to her face as possible. "I want to sleep, so don't think about it" a meow was her only response.
