Orientation? What orientation?

Chapter One

It was a gloriously sunny day outside. The kind of sunny day that incinerates anything and everything in its power without sun protection. The horrible sort of sunny day that makes everyone want to just stay inside with the air conditioning and avoid the sun. It was the kind of sunny day that made people attempt to do extremely foolish things, such as destroying the sun.

Standing outside and leaning casually beside an ornate door in the said horribly sunny day in all his gay goth glory was Trillium Gunter. He was lithe and short, with pale skin that looked dead at times. He had shoulder length purple hair and tattoos all over his body that looked like stitches. Now Trill was not one to enjoy being in sunlight without major compensation, so he cursed at having to wait pointlessly.

A butterfly flew past his face and he watched it flutter harmlessly for a few minutes, an odd smile gracing his lips before lunging at the creature and trying to snap it out of the air with a loud ‘CHOMP!’ The butterfly, being a most worthy adversary, managed to easily avoid being crushed into something beyond recognition and fluttered away unarmed, leaving Trill fuming and swearing his revenge.
However, he soon got bored of that and his cursing was replaced by an annoyed look as he glanced at the doorway and resumed his waiting. Time seemed endless for poor Trill, and he finally pounded his fist against the large door as if hitting the door would hurry the person inside along.

“Hurry up in there! We’re gonna be late!!” It had been his stupid plan to wait outside in hopes that the fact he was already outside would hurry his companion along. Luckily, luck was on his side that morning and the door swung open just seconds after Trill had begrudgingly removed his hand. Good thing too, that door could easily take off his hand and wrist if he wasn’t careful.

Sauntering out from the room beyond the door was an interesting figure dressed in a sweater, a humungous floppy straw hat and black sunglasses. The figure removed the sunglasses and arched an elegant eyebrow at Trill. Standing at 6 feet, one would say that Rozario Azel was an intimidating figure. His hair being long, curly, and golden accentuated his crimson eyes and slightly bronzed skin.

“I just needed to get ready. Eugh, sunlight.”

Trill rolled his eyes. “And you needed 3 hours for that?! Great we’re going to be late for the first day!” Roza was nothing short of amused, Trill’s complaining reminded him of a small yapping dog trying to be ferocious.

“Relax; we’ll just have to run then.” Roza adjusted his hat and put his sunglasses back on before disappearing and appearing at the end of the walkway some 15 feet away. The only proof that betrayed his movement was the swishing of Trill’s hair from the burst of wind Roza’s sprint made. He waved from the sidewalk. “Who’s the slow one now?” Trill spluttered angrily and made to catch up with Roza while screaming random curses at him. Roza just laughed.

The large mansion they had emerged from looked completely empty, the only thing betraying the fact that it was actually inhabited was the motorcycle and vespa parked in front of the driveway.

The sun was still shining horribly brightly, but that didn’t deter the many new college students that approached the large important looking building that was to be their place of learning for the next who-knows-how-many-years. Already students were choosing the natural pecking order that would classify them into the classic stereotypes that would haunt them for the remainder of their lives. Sitting in small groups so they wouldn’t overwhelm each other, the students poured over their registration packets and complained over who they would be bunking with in their dorms.

“This is unfair. It is obviously a violation of my rights!” The speaker had thick round glasses; therefore he shall be referred to as Thick Glasses. He looked positively outraged and was flailing his arms in the air in frustration, looking like a rather large chicken. The 3 other people at the picnic bench they were occupying looked rather skeptical. One of the girls looked at him weirdly. Her clothes were all black and she had dark makeup on; therefore earning her the nickname ‘Black Clothes’.

“Well it can’t be that bad... can it?”

Thick Glasses gaped at Black Clothes. “Engelbert. Who in their right mind names their kid ENGELBERT??!”

The other girl spoke up. “I didn’t even know it was a name.”

Thick Glasses pouted and looked about the field where there were other groups of people just like their little ‘gang’ getting over the many shocks of their dorm mates.
“How the hell did you guys get so lucky?” Thick Glasses looked jealously at Black Clothes and the other girl. “I mean you two got bunked together! How did you do that?”

Black Clothes and Other Girl looked nervously at each other. “Just lucky I guess” Black Clothes seemed determined not to look at Thick Glasses. “Well we might have…you know…”

“…Kidnapped our Resident Advisor’s cat” Other Girl finished. Thick Glasses face-faulted. A butterfly flew
beside them and fluttered onto the final member of their group’s head. A guy who had headphones around his neck and looked rather amused at the whole conversation. The butterfly flapped off and Thick Glasses found his voice. "I see... Damnit! I should have done that too! But noooooo, I’m too dang nice and get stuck with the dreaded random roommate thing!”

Headphones decided to speak up. “You never know, this Engelbert could turn out to be a really nice guy,” He pointed out, “you can’t just judge someone by their name- ”

“HOLD UP. Stalker at 12:00!” Other Girl pointed to a tree where there was a bit of pink sticking out from behind of. Thick Glasses looked at his watch. “But it’s only nine o’….Ooohhh... THAT 12:00!” He at least had the decency to look embarrassed.

Slowly coming around the tree and attempting to lean against it casually was a young girl wearing a pink skirt and green tank top. She looked just TOO casual standing there and trying to look like she belonged, despite the fact that she looked terrified and like she was having the time of her life at the same time. When she saw that the group around the old picnic bench noticed her, her face lit up into a huge smile and she eagerly gravitated to the group like a moth to flames. When she arrived at last to the table where the four friends were looking at her like she was a frog with a tie, she started to smooth down her hair, thinking it was standing up in a bizarre fashion.

“So...hey.. uh.. I’m a freshman and I was just...uh...The Lab! Yes, I was looking for the lab!” Her voice was like shattering glass and the entire group winced. This stalker girl was going to be a problem. Black Clothes narrowed her eyes. “Aren’t you from the high school just down the street?”

She gestured down the street, and there, in plain view of the campus college was a high school with many curious and happy teens milling around the grounds. The group looked pointedly at the Stalker Girl, and Stalker Girl shook her head so much that it looked like she may have given herself whiplash had she continued. “What? No! I’m totally in college! What makes you think I’m not?!” She attempted to cover her nervousness by smoothing out her hair yet again.

The group all exchanged glances and by some unspoken command, all stood up at the same time and towered over the little teenage Stalker Girl. Her eyes widened and she unconsciously took a small step backwards. They were all so tall! She looked like a mouse in comparison to the college students.

Headphones smiled a little at the young girl. “Sorry, we’d love to tell you where the lab is but we don’t know where the Lab is either… We’re freshmen too.” Stalker Girl looked slightly shocked. She had been so sure that they had been seniors or something. A bell sounded in the distance and Stalker Girl jumped. “Oh.. well, I think I have to go now….ummm.. I have to uuhh…shampoo my aunt’s pet hamster! Yeah that’s it!” she started edging away from the group and picked up a backpack they hadn’t noticed before from the ground.

“You see I promised, and I really can’t break my promise to her and she lives so far away and if I don’t leave now then I’ll never make it in time! Bye Now!!” And off she ran as if the fires of hell were after her, predictably right towards the high school down the road.

Black Clothes turned to the group triumphantly. “You see? I told you she came from the high school!”

The others shrugged and made to continue with their bizarre conversation if it weren’t for the sudden surge of people on the other side of the street by the campus that caught their attention. Headphones looked on in interest. “Where are all those people going?” Other Girl shrugged. “It’s almost as if they’re forming into some sort of crowd for something important…” Thick Glasses took off his glasses to clean them. “Perhaps we should go investigate?” He nonchalantly put his glasses back on and picked up his backpack. “Shall we go too?” The others agreed and hurriedly picked up their respective belongings before heading to cross the street with Headphones leading the way.

Thick Glasses turned to Black Clothes as they crossed the street. “That was weird. Were we really like that in high school?” Black Clothes shrugged and was about to answer when she was cut off by a scream and the yelling of Other Girl, “Look Out!!”

They both turned to see Other Girl pull Headphones back and trip over Thick Glasses so they all land in a heap; just in time too, otherwise they would have been squashed by a large blood red motorcycle. From the ground, the group stared as the motorcycle parked right in front of the campus and the rider dismounted. He removed his hat that had somehow miraculously managed to stay on his head during the ride and shook his hair out from underneath it. A cascade of golden wavy hair fell down the figure’s back as he turned to look at the group he almost massacred, before dismissing them and turning back to his bike.

Black Clothes glared deeply at the owner of the bike and turned to her friends. “Is everyone alright?” She gets up and pulls up Thick Glasses while the others clambered up to their feet and stated that they were un-injured. She regarded the guy with long hair with undisguised loathing. “Damn pretty boys and their toys, he wasn’t even wearing a helmet!”

A horn honked at the group still in the middle of the road and they jumped as a vespa swerved to avoid them and parked next to the motorbike. Its rider got off, removed his helmet and turned to talk to the long-haired owner of the motorcycle. Black Clothes groaned. “Great… He’s got friends.” The two boys locked their vehicles and started walking over to the large group of people that were now heading inside the campus. As they watched the taller one with long curly hair grab his friend’s arm and pull him towards the doors, they could distinctly hear him say “See? I told you we weren’t going to be late.”

“Say,” Headphones spoke up, “This may just be me, and my crazy sense of logic...but isn’t the middle of the street one of those places you generally don’t want to stand in?” He was met with silence. “Right…Orientation, That thing we were going to…” Black Clothes started walking toward the campus, embarrassed that she had forgotten what they were doing before the motor bike thing. The others followed close behind her. As they reached the doors Thick Glasses spoke up. “God, I hope neither of those two were Engelbert.”

Other Girl gave his a weird look. “Did you just use ‘neither’ in a sentence?”

Thick Glasses blushed. “Yes. Fear my brilliant college vocabulary!”
