Only Human
Chapter Two
~Only Human~
“A centaur and a human? And both of you male, too,” the stranger lifted a slender hand to brush back strands of hair that had fallen in his face. He smirked as Dietal flushed, both hands dropping from around the librarians waist. He rose from his kneeling position and stepped back to put more space between them. Katan not really paying attention as his hands that had been resting on Dietal fell limply into the water with a splash. “I must say that this small town is more open minded than I had initially thought. Guess you can’t judge on first impressions.”
“Um,” Katan closed his gapping mouth with a snap when he realized how rude it must have seemed, “you must be the stranger that people,” ‘people’ being Dietal, “are talking about.”
“Hm, I suppose I must be. This place doesn’t seem to get too many travelers. Especially the non human kind.” Putting his hands casually on his hips, the stranger stepped closer to the river. “The horse,” he nodded towards Dietal, “and the blacksmith that’s near your stables are the only non humans I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in this town.”
“Oh?” Katan reached up to scratch his head in confusion, but instead hit his head with the brush he had forgotten was still in his hand. Wincing slightly he used his other hand to rub the spot, ignoring the snort of laughter coming from the Stable master. “What makes you think Robert’s not human?”
“Please,” the stranger scoffed, “I can tell things like that rather easily. It’s quite obvious what he is just glancing at him.”
“...” Katan looked at Dietal in even more confusion.
The Stable master looked at him in disbelief. “Don’t tell me you didn’t know!” Grabbing the brush from Katans unresisting grasp, he headed towards the river bank. “Katan, everybody knows Robert isn’t human.”
“Wait a minute,” the stranger said sharply, causing Dietal to pause in mid stride. “What’s you’re name?” he asked Katan.
Looking at him in confusion, Katan followed the Stable master as he continued out of the river. “Katan,” he answered slowly, “what’s yours?”
“Silvius,” the stranger answered absent mindedly, studying the librarian closely as he got out of the water.
Feeling slightly self conscious at the close scrutiny, he hurriedly dressed even though he was still dripping wet. Picking up his pitcher full of water he turned back to the Stable master, who had just finished dressing as well.
“I didn’t know Robert wasn’t human,” Katan said to Dietal. “He seems human enough to me.”
“He may seem human most of the time, but...,” Dietal shook his wet head at me in amusement. “You really didn’t know?”
“He never seemed not human,” Katan sighed, “not that we really ever talked or anything, we’ve only had one sided conversations.”
“Haven’t you ever wondered why he wears such a large and heavy metal collar and chain around his neck?”
“...isn’t that just some sort of clothing style?”
“Katan,” Dietal looked pained, “for someone that’s supposed to be so smart, you really don’t have allot of common sense, do you?”
“Well, what else could it be for? Its way too big for him, it’d slip right over his head!”
“It’s because he’s cursed,” the stranger, Silvius answered before Dietal could. “He turns into a werewolf on the night of a full moon.”
“A werewolf?” Katan gasped in surprise. “But aren’t they supposed to be evil and vicious creatures that have no control over what they do?”
“Hence the collar and chain,” Dietal glared slightly at Silvius, who in turn just shrugged. “Really, it was Roberts' story to tell, but there you have it.”
“Huh,” Katan thought it over for a minute, then shook his head. Learn something new everyday, he thought silently. “Well, I’m heading back. It’s starting to get real dark out.”
“I’ll walk you home,” Silvius offered immediately, startling Katan.
“Uh,” he said intelligently.
“There’s no need to,” Dietal said. “I live right next to him. Besides, aren’t you going to bathe?”
“Bathe? You mean in this water,” Silvius looked slightly ill, “please, I was just out for a walk before I turned in.”
“Well, the library is on the way to the inn, so I don’t see why you can’t walk with us,” Katan said politely, heading down the dirt path with Dietal beside him. Silvius followed a few steps behind them.
“So,” Katan said after a few silent steps, “what brings you to Yiv?” He glanced over his shoulder at the elf when he got no reply. His eyes caught on the sharp gaze of the other, nearly stumbling with the force of it. “What’s wrong?” he asked Silvius.
“Mn,” Silvius replied, averting his gaze further down the path. “How long have you been here, Katan?”
Slowing his pace so that Silvius was walking beside him, Katan shrugged. “I dunno, I’ve been here for as long as I can remember.” Looking over to the Stable master that was now a few paces in front of them, his gaze was thoughtful. “I remember when Bret was the Stable master. He brought a young centaur to my library one day, saying he wanted the boy to read. How old were you then, Dietal?”
“Seven,” the Stable master answered. “I’m twenty-five right now.”
“Hm, so at least eighteen years,” Silvius mumbled to himself.
“I also remember when Bret’s father was Stable master as well,” Katan continued. “And his fathers father…Adam I think his name was.”
Dietal looked at him incredulously. “Just how old are you, Katan?”
“Who knows?” Katan dismissed it with a shrug.
“All this time, you’ve been a…what? A librarian, right?” At Katan’s nod, Silvius frowned. “What a waste.”
“Excuse me?” Katan asked sharply, but he was ignored.
“What were you doing before you decided to live in Yiv?” Silvius asked instead.
For several heart beats the only sound was of Dietals hooves striking the hard dirt, and the wind as it rustled through the thick trees. The only light came from the half moon above and the faint glow of the town in the distance.
“I don’t remember,” Katan admitted quietly. “When I say that I’ve been in Yiv for as long as I could remember, it’s because I don’t remember anything but Yiv. I’ve always had the library. Anything before that…it just doesn’t seem to be too important.”
“That’s what everyone in the town says,” Dietal inputted, “Katan has just always been here.”
“You don’t remember…” Silvius stopped in the middle of the path, causing Dietal and Katan to look at him questioningly. “I’ll leave you two here,” was all he said before walking off the path and into the forest.
They looked at each other in confusion. “That was rather abrupt, don’t you think?” Dietal asked, continuing towards the town.
“Wonder what’s wrong?”
“Huh, well, he’s an elf, what do you expect, really?”
“Are they always like that?”
“He’s the first one I’ve ever met,” Dietal replied, “how would I know if elves are always like that? But I have heard that they’re rather…temperamental. Shouldn’t you know? I mean, you’re a librarian right? What do all those books tell you?”
“Ah, those are just made up stories for kids. The only adult books I have are on human history and human hunting. We do live in a human town after all.”
“You aren’t human, and you’re the librarian. You should have some non human stuff mixed in there as well.” They neared the blacksmith shop, which was dark and cold looking. Robert must have gone inside for the night.
“It doesn’t really matter what I like, I’m not the customer.”
“Actually, I think you’re the only customer,” Dietal laughed at his angry look. “It’s true, isn’t it?”
“Even if that is true, which it’s not, I’m human,” Katan glared at the Stable master. “What makes you say other wise?”
“Uh…you’re age?”
Stopping in front of the library, Katan looked at him, slightly confused. “Age doesn’t matter, Dietal. I may look young for my age, but that doesn’t mean I’m not human. Anyways,” Dietal looked like he was going to protest, and Katan waved him silent, “I’m tired. I’ll see you later, okay?”
Dietal sighed, his tail flickering in annoyance. “Yeah, sleep well, Katan.”
“You too, Dietal.”
Katan entered the library with a sigh of his own. After placing the pitcher of water on the table by the door, he started towards the back of the room.
Well, he thought to himself, that was an interesting night. I don’t think I’ve ever had that long of a conversation with anyone!
He wasn’t paying any attention to his surroundings, which was why it took him by complete surprise. The only warning he got was the faint scuffle of a boot against the floor before a hand grabbed his shoulder from behind and the cold feeling of a steel blade piercing his chest.
