Chapter Two
A/N: Hey, so here’s chapter two! Hope everyone likes it and reviews it!
Chapter Two
Kaila Turner smiled as she watched patrons mingle amongst the surrounding art. Paintings from all over the country by unknown artists were being analyzed and critiqued by art enthusiasts. It was exactly what she wanted. A space where beauty and art could belong together and have people of all ages enjoy them. It was the best feeling in the world to see her hard work come to fruition with such great results.
Dressed in a black pinstripe skirt suit, Kaila walked around her gallery mentally noting problems or issues. Here, there was no problem too big that she couldn’t handle. She didn’t have to deal with the labyrinth that was her life. Her main focus was the art. How to make it look better, what angle the lighting should be placed, what order the paintings need to be in, these questions were all things she could deal with.
Why she continued to be drawn to Damian; that was something she didn’t know. Just before dawn, Kaila had gathered her clothes and softly made her way out of his estate. Mentally she kicked herself for being so stupid. All he had to do was call or look at her in a certain way and she was in his bed faster than… well, something fast. She didn’t know what exactly but it didn’t make her feel any better.
A pit grew in her stomach. It was constantly growing. Her ‘relationship’ or whatever it was defined as, was wrong. Damian was using her. She knew it. They had never talked about their feelings. Heck, she herself didn’t know what she felt for him. Kaila just knew her body charged when he was near or even when she merely thought of him. That wasn’t love. Lust, maybe. There’s frustration at not being able to resist him, anger at him for using that to his advantage, guilt when all was said and done. It was a continuous cycle that Kaila just did not know how to get out of.
But now, things were different. Riley was in her life. He was a man she’d met one night after work. Kaila had gone with Marissa to a lounge for cocktails and Riley had been there with his friends. He was charming and good looking. Riley was everything Kaila wanted. Well, should have wanted.
Riley and Kaila were dating. For six months now and Kaila was no closer to breaking it off with Damian. She felt like a horrible person. Kaila didn’t know how to make things work. Damian and Riley kept her up all night thinking and stressing. She knew what she HAD to do but she also knew what she wanted to do. Kaila was not the type of girl who would have ever cheated on a boyfriend. She did not think it was right. It was betrayal in the worst way and yet she could not seem to make things right.
When she thought of never being near Damian again, her whole body ached, her throat constricted and her heart actually, literally hurt. With Riley, her sense of well being was affected. She was not in a relationship with Damian. He was not her boyfriend. Riley was. Riley was the man who made her feel protected and loved. Perhaps it was the classic case of a passionate heart versus a sensible brain. Either way, Kaila knew she would have to make a decision.
‘Kaila, you’ve got a call.’ she heard Marissa call from behind her.
Turning quickly around, Kaila made her way to her own office and picked up the line with a ‘Hello’.
‘Hey babe, it’s just me.’
‘Riley, hey. What’s up?’ Kaila greeted after releasing a deep breath. She wasn’t disappointed. NO. She was happy that it was Riley and not Damian.
‘I’m at the office right now. Listen, on Saturday there’s a banquet dinner I need to go to and I thought you might take pity on me and come. I need someone to keep me sane while I attempt to network along with the other lackeys. So what do you say?’ Riley asked.
Kaila couldn’t help but smile. She loved how sincere he always was. There never seemed to be any fronts with him, always genuine. ‘Hmm…other lackeys you say? How exactly will I benefit from this evening?’ Kaila teased.
‘Well, you get to go all out and dress up. Hair, dress, make-up, I hear women like that sort of thing. Plus, you’ll have the best looking guy on your arm. That alone is reason enough.’ Riley said with all seriousness.
‘Hmmm…Those are all valid reasons. Alright, I’m in. But just know that I’ll be expecting first class treatment.’ Kaila smiled as she sat down in her leather chair behind her large oak desk.
‘What? Don’t I always give the first class treatment? Remember that night we went for ice cream? I let you have the part of the sundae with the chocolate sprinkles!’ Riley jokingly admonished.
‘Oh sure, after I batted my lashes for six minutes and then had to resort to pouting. I was just short of smacking your hand away from my sprinkles and running off with the bowl! Face it, you’re lucky to have me at all!’ Kaila laughed. Suddenly her attention was drawn to her door. Damian. He was just standing against the door frame with that look that meant he wanted her full attention. Kaila’s smile immediately diminished and she was instantly torn into two very distinct pieces.
Riley, too, grew serious but for another reason ‘Believe me when I say I know just how lucky I am.’
Kaila turned in her chair trying to avoid the gleam in Damian’s eyes. She just knew he was smirking at having seen her so undone by his mere presence. ‘Well it’s good that you know it. Umm, Riley, I should get going. I’ve got someone waiting for me to go over some paintings with. I’ll see you tonight, though.’
‘Sounds good. See you, bye.’ Riley said before hanging up the line.
‘What are you doing here?’ Kaila asked sternly. It was an unspoken rule that they never interfere with each other’s business endeavours unless absolutely necessary.
Damian smiled, like a cat, a fierce cat that looked like he was about to devour some poor unsuspecting mouse. He looked so good wearing a jet black suit, crisp white shirt and styled hair that begged to have her fingers clenched within it. It was so wrong that he was able to look that devastatingly beautiful.
‘I can’t visit the woman who keeps my bed, among other things, warm?’ He asked coyly while wandering around her office picking things up and inspecting them. For some reason she felt violated. It seemed wrong for him to just walk into her office as if it were his and touch her personal belongings.
Ignoring his obvious attempt to goad, Kaila returned with a question of her own ‘What do you want Damian?’
‘I just wanted to see how my investment was doing. Things appear to be going well from what I can see.’ He murmured.
‘If you want to see the books, I can get Marissa in here to give you the actual figures.’ Kaila informed him. She was getting nervous. He never inquired about how the gallery was going, partly because he always already knew.
She knew that Damien kept tabs on what was going on.
Damien moved closer towards Kaila. He sauntered and she could smell the soft cologne aftershave he put on in the morning. The closer he came to her, the harder it was to remember herself let alone anything else.
He came to halt in front of her chair that was twisted at the desk to face him. His finger touched her glossed lower lips and he smiled before moving the same finger to graze the top of the phone she was just holding. Never breaking his gaze from Kaila’s, Damien bent down and asked ‘Who was on the phone?’
She took a breath and firmly said, ‘That’s none of your business.’
Her voice cracked and she felt tension that threatened to crush her chest. His dark eyes and dark hair were nothing compared to the darkness she felt whenever he looked at her like some kind of wild predator. She allowed him to lift her chin to brush his warm lips against the soft flesh of face.
‘Does he know how much you moan when I make you…’ he whispered against her cheek.
Kaila jerked away from him ‘Stop it!’ only to have him grip both of her wrists and pull her towards him. He crushed his lips against hers and showed no kindness whatsoever. He then abruptly pushed her away and straightened up before saying ‘I guess not’ and strode out the door.
Kaila continued to sit in her chair with a shocked expression painted across her face. He knew. Damien knew about Riley.
