Missing Data
Chapter One: Missing Data
“I can’t find a thing!!”
“You know…I think this was destined to fail from the beginning…there’s no way a shinigami can actually exist!! And a normal human being can’t be missing for almost 200 years…”
(Kaito sat heavily on his chair, they’d been working in this ’case’ for almost 5 years, and only some few clues had come out, nothing really relevant but Hideki kept up his hopes, saying that there actually HAD to be something out there waiting to be found, but…still, things were difficult, Minagawa Kaito had been a detective for the Japanese Bureau of Health and Welfare some years ago, specifically the ’Matori’ division, and had heard of the rumour of a guy who simply disappeared from the face of the earth but had never thought that could have anything to do with the supernatural nor spiritual world…besides, people disappeared every day, you just get used to not seeing them again…or so he thought…)
“Oh c’mon! I know you don’t mean that!!...I mean, please, a person doesn’t simply vanish into thin air like that!! I know there’s more to this than what’s visible!!”
“You keep telling yourself that…I don’t think so anymore…”
“Why do you have to be so cruel??”
“I don’t know…that’s my nature…why don’t we stop for today?? Aren’t you tired at all??”
(Hideki yawned and then eyed his cup of coffee)
“Nah…I’ll stay here for some more time…if you want to go, fine…I’ll keep on going…”
“God…as you wish…”
(Kaito left, and Hideki kept on looking into any appealing data base for anything, then…something popped out…it was a document, old enough as for being from the late 1800’s, it was like some kind of letter, though, it had no sender’s address, he printed it and read it…)
’Dr. K:
I won’t be able to meet you under the Great Clock anymore…I’m being summoned, and I have to leave for the castle on the last island again…
Fire has left my soul again, and I need to find it again, it seems like the wind has been playing tricks with his own immortal kid…
I know the shadows will be fine without me for a while.
Farewell, take care…
K.M.
“Oh my god…”
(Hideki grabbed his cell-phone quickly and dialled Kaito’s one, after some seconds, Kaito’s annoyed voice answered him)
“Now what??”
“Oh c’mon don’t be so cruel Mr. Minagawa!!”
“Get straight to the point or I’ll hang up…”
“Ok…you don’t have to be so grumpy all the time you know??... Well, whatever, the point here is that I found something interesting…it’s a letter, old enough as for being from the 1800’s…”
“How do you know if it’s what we’re looking for??”
(Hideki went to the kitchen, and made some more coffee, the sound of rustling paper and some clicking sound were heard, he continued)
“I don’t exactly know…but…I found it on an English data base that was making a research on ancient English texts, specially poetry and stuff like that, but then I found this old document, a letter, no sender ID or any other data than can be used to locate the place were it was written or from which it was sent…call me naïf, but still…it’s interesting, it’s like an imaginary poem, but I still think it must be something important…want to come and see it??”
“Tomorrow…I’m too tired right now… and, whether you like it or not, you’re just human and you need to rest too…”
“So you say, I’m not that sure myself though…well then, see you tomorrow…”
(Hideki hung up and dropped his cell-phone on the desk, turned off all the computers, printers and things and turned off the light of the studio, closing the door behind him…maybe Kaito was right and he DID need some rest too…)
