Another Day, Another Deed
Bethany sat on her front steps waiting for Pete just like every other morning. Ever since Pete got his license he and Bethany always road to school together. Sadly, it only added to the rumors since Pete drove a rebuilt 1989 Harley-Davidson motorcycle; which meant holding on with a tight grip. Bethany continued thinking about last night. Part of her was ecstatic to spread the news of her big break, yet the other part of her was scared to face Pete.
‘Why had he acted so strangely? Why did he hate Mr. Turn… Nate, so much? ‘ Bethany wanted to respect Nate’s wish to have her call him by his first name. After all the rest of the cast would be too, right?
Just then Pete pulled in front of her house, interrupting her thoughts and bringing her back to reality.
“Ready?” Pete asked while tossing Bethany the spare helmet as she walked closer to him and his bike.
“Yeah.” Both Pete and Bethany felt the tension in the air. Yet, both didn’t want to acknowledge it. Pete didn’t want to have to explain anything to Bethany, and Bethany didn’t wish to upset Pete anymore than he already was.
The ride to school was always silent, but today was different. They both felt the change, and neither one of them enjoyed it. Yet, neither one was ready to acknowledge it either.
Once they reached the school parking lot they both felt relieved; escape was near. Pete parked as fast as he could find a spot; not bothering to find a closer spot to the doors. He hated fighting with Bethany. She was the one truly bright thing in his life, and he didn’t want to lose it. However, he already felt as if he was close to losing her forever.
Bethany hopped off the bike quickly, not lingering a moment longer than she needed to. She knew Pete and knew that he needed time to cool off before she finally did confront him about the previous night. As she made her way around the front of the bike, handing Pete the spare helmet, she heard him speak up.
“I’ll audition.” Bethany couldn’t believe hear ears. She raised her eyes, which were now filled to the brim with shock, to his rich chocolate ones.
“What?” She needed to make sure she wasn’t jus hearing things.
“I’ll audition for your play.” Pete felt horrible after what he did to Bethany last night. He stayed awake for hours trying to find a way to make it up to her and get her away from that damn play. After hours of inner debate, Pete realized that the only way to keep Bethany safe and in the dark, as well as make it up to her, was to get the male lead role.
“Oh Pete!” Bethany leaped towards Pete and developed him in a one of her huge bear hugs. “This means so much to me! Maybe you’ll get the part of Jim, and then we’ll both would be the leads! Wouldn’t it be perfect?! I know that the script isn’t finished but I’m sure that you’d be perfect as Jim, or even Bobbie. Oh Pete, this is so perfect! Isn’t…”
“Hold on, I said I’d audition. Let’s just leave it at that and whatever happens happens. Okay?” Pete loved it when Bethany rambled on and on. It always made him happier and smile; regardless of how crappy he had been feeling.
“Fine, but it’s still perfect!” Bethany stuck her tongue out at Pete and then ran towards to school doors.
Pete took advantage of his study hall and went to visit Mr. Turner about the auditions. He stood outside of Mr. Turners’ office, took a deep breath, and then knocked. Once he heard a slightly muffled ‘come in’, Pete placed his hand on the cold brass knob and opened the door. When the door was finally opened enough, Pete saw a very smug and amused Nathan Turner staring back at him.
“Peter West. I knew you’d come and visit me eventually.” Nathan Turner was leaning back in his chair, looking very comfortable. It was a silent way of informing Pete that Mr. Turner wasn’t about to leave East Falmouth High anytime soon.
“I want in on the play.” Pete walked towards the desk and didn’t take his eyes off of Mr. Turner; attempting to stand his own ground. He pulled out a chair, setting his pink hall pass on the desk and tried to make himself look at ease.
“Why the sudden interest in my production, Peter? Could it have anything to do with your little girlfriend being my leading lady?” Peter didn’t like the emphasis Turner was putting on the word my.
“You shut up about her.”
“Why? Are you afraid of her finding out about you…or me?”
“Shouldn’t you be the one that’s afraid, Turner? I mean after all, you were…what… 29 or 30 verses a 13 year old at a summer camp. I’m guessing that it would be pretty bad if the school board found out, am I right?”
“Of course it would bad for me… and you.”
“I’m not the one with a teaching license at stake.”
“No, but you are the one that Ms. Rosedale looks up too; isn’t that right?”
Pete’s face paled. He knew that he could never tell anyone what happened at that stupid summer camp. He would and could never fall off of Bethany’s pedestal. She needed him to be that guy that was trustworthy and truthful. If she found out about his secret regarding Mr. Turner, things would never be the same.
“I won’t tell, but I want a role in the play.”
“Alright, you can be the male lead. You’ll get a front row ticket to watch me instruct and direct the only person you’ve never lied to. Oh wait, that’s not correct is it Mr. West?”
“I’ve got the part?” Pete was clenching his teeth together at this point. He hated what Nathan Turned did to him, but he needed to keep Bethany safe from all of Mr. Turners’ tricks.
“Yep, practice is at 5 everyday. Make sure to close the door on the way to the principles office, Mr. West.”
“What?”
Mr. Turner reached over towards where Pete placed his muted pink hall pass, grabbed it and ripped it in half.
“Well, I don’t see a hall pass Mr. West; that’s grounds for detention. I’m sure you’ll be able to figure it out on your way to Principal Connors’ office.” Mr. Turner smirked evilly at Pete. “I’ll call down there to let them know you’re coming. Have a great day.”
Pete walked out of Turners' office fuming. He sometimes couldn’t believe the things he did to protect Bethany; especially from his secret.
