Chapter 2
“Dooor!” Chase yelled, making me groan, holding my head. That kid sure had a set of lungs on him. It’s a wonder I’m not deaf by now, seriously.
Getting up from the couch, I playfully smacked Chase on the head as I passed him to get to the door. Chase gave me a pout, following close behind me, acting like a baby chick following it’s mother.
I opened the door, knowing as soon as I did that I was flushing. Why did Cole have to look that good? He stood about six feet, with dark midnight black hair. His shin was sun kissed and I bet very smooth to the touch. He had the softest baby blue eyes that one could get lost in forever.
Cole smiled at me, waving a hand. “Hey,” he said.
“Er hi,” I answered back, for the first time noticing a little girl clinging to Cole’s legs. I gave the girl a curious look, then looked back up at Cole.
Chase walked toward the girl, “hiya, I’m Chase,” he said. The girl just gave a shy smile, but didn’t speak, making Chase feel hurt, I could tell by the look on his face. He wasn’t used to being ignored.
“Kyle, this is Allison.” Cole patted the dark haired girl on the head. “I had to bring her because I was babysitting.”
I knelt down, “hi, Ally. Can I call you that?”
Still the girl didn’t talk, instead looking up at Cole, giving him a look I couldn’t quite read. Cole chuckled, “All right, all right, I’ll tell them.”
Cole walked into the house, Allison right behind him, holding onto his legs as if for dear life.
I wondered how Cole read her expression so well.
“Allison is mute. She can’t talk.”
What!? Mute? At such a young age. That sure explained why she didn’t respond to either Chase nor I.
Chase got a sad look on his face and I could tell he wanted to cry, the sensitive boy that he is. Instead he smiled a brave smile, reaching his hand out for Allison’s. “Wanna go play in my room, Ally? I have lots of toys and…” He lowered his voice, though we could still hear him as he hadn’t quite got down the concept of whispering yet.
“I stoled some of Kyle’s video games. You can play with me.”
Allison bit her lower lip, giving Chase a nervous look. She looked up at Cole. Cole gave her a soft smile, which I have to say was very breathtaking. He gave her a smile and nodded his head.
“Go on,” Cole encouraged.
Allison smiled, letting go of Cole and instead grabbing Chase’s offered hand.
I smiled, feeling a warm and fuzzy feeling in my heart as I watched them run off. Aww, young romance in the making.
Haha, I’m jumping the gun I know, but… it’s so cute.
I looked over at Cole… who I noticed happened to be staring at me.
Blushing, I smiled, “she’s cute. She looks just like you…”
Eh… did I just say she was cute and she looks just like him!? Dang it, I basically just said he was cute, didn’t I?
Cole just smiled at me, not seeming to care or notice anything wrong with what I had said.
“Yeah,” he nodded.
“How old is she?” I asked.
“Seven,” Cole answered.
“Oh, Chase is six.”
We lapsed into strange silence, both of us looking at each other, waiting for one of us to speak up. Finally I broke the silence.
“Cole… the reason I asked you to come over..”
“Actually it’s embarrassing…” I admitted, looking down.
“What?” Cole probed.
“You know about me right?” I asked. “That I’m gay?”
Cole laughed, “are you going to confess your love?” Cole teased.
I turned blood red, “no! God, no, it’s nothing like that.”
“Well, you’re the only one at school who doesn’t treat me like a decease, and I was hoping you could do something for me…? It’s asking a lot… but you’ll get paid.”
A look flashed across Cole’s eyes and at once I know he got the wrong idea. God, did I have to say it like that? I made it sound like… well, you get the idea.
“Get your head out of the gutter,” I muttered.
Cole just laughed, “sorry. Go on.”
“Okay, it’s like this…”
I told him everything. How mom and dad were leaving for at least a few weeks, maybe longer. How they wanted me to have someone living with me to help me watch Chase because the toddler was a basket case.
I ended by quietly asking Cole if he’d do it.
I’m so embarrassed. I hope Cole understands why I asked him… he’s all I got. Gee, that sounds wrong.
“Kyle…”
For some reason, I blushed, hearing my name on his lips. Stupid hormones.
“Yes?” I whispered, looking up to meet Cole’s beautiful eyes.
Cole smiled, “I’d be happy to actually. Sounds fun and your brother seems to be a doll.”
I grinned, no I beamed…
Wait… I do not beam… Nope, no way…
Okay, heck I was beaming like a three year old being set loose in a candy store .
“Really? Thank you.”
Cole grinned, “It’s my pleasure…”
Okay… why did his voice sound different then?
I gave him another smile. “You’re a life savor.”
“I’m happy to help out. You don’t mind if my mom drops Allison off from time to time to play with Chase, do you?”
Do I mind!?
“Of course not,” I exclaimed.
Cole gave me a smile that nearly make me fall to the ground. I’ve never seen such a thankful smile before. “Thank you. Allison doesn’t have any friends because of her condition… and to top it off she’s super shy. But with Chase, she seems to open up.”
God I love my brother. He needs to make Cole smile like that more often. It’s so breathtaking.
“Chase doesn’t judge. He even knows I’m gay and it doesn’t bother him. We’ve explained as best as we can what that means and he said…”
I felt choked for a moment…
“He said, as long as I’m happy, he’s happy.” I chuckled. “He also said…” I blushed, “well, never mind.”
Cole smirked. God, he looks hot when he does that.
“Come now, what were you going to say?”
Blushing, I looked up, “he said I needed to find someone to make me happy all the time,” I mumbled.
Cole smiled, “I’m sure you will…soon.”
