Chapter One
Since you pointed out that it's a bit on the short side... ok very short, I'll explain. I find it easier to write an itty bitty moment at a time... I'll cut and paste the story together when I'm done. Now onwards:
Chapter One
The door creaked ominously as he pushed it open.
- You just have to stay here until dawn, if you leave before that you’ll lose, okay?
Sarah sounded unusually chipper when she laid down the terms and Lucas couldn’t from smiling.
- Understood, and if I win?
She smirked seductively.
- Then I will have a very special surprise for you.
She kissed his cheek and turned to leave.
- Oh, and remember, I want that ring as proof.
Lucas closed the door behind her and grimaced. He had almost forgotten about the second part of the bet. Sticking his hands into an old musty coffin to rob a corpse was not his idea of fun.
He stepped inside the great octagonal hallway and felt a twinge of marvel at the shear size. Grey light streamed from the skylight, illuminating the mahogany staircase and the ancient statues depicting wood nymphs and fauns resting in their alcoves.
It really was a beautiful house beneath all the dust and cobwebs and Lucas couldn’t help but wish that he could’ve gotten the chance to see it resurrected and displayed in the light of soft gaslight as it had once stood little over a century ago.
He made is way through one of the archways into the library. Books still lined the walls, curiously untampered by time. Lucas frowned in puzzlement before he set out to prepare his sleeping bag and roll out the map over the grounds.
They had decided together that he would sleep in the library and then in the middle of the night he would search for the little chapel connected to the house. According to legend this was where the young Master Crowell had been buried, if not laid to rest.
An involuntary shudder followed his spine. While he didn’t believe in ghosts he couldn’t deny the strange occurrences in and around the house: The building developer that had planned to turn the house and the surrounding park into a mini-suburb, had had all his machinery destroyed and when he had tried to start cutting down the oak trees lining the avenue, several of his men had suffered unexplained heart attacks. Though none of the attacks had been fatal the contractor had ditched his plan and since then the area had been protected by mutual understanding amongst the city counsel.
Many teenagers coming here to smash windows with rocks had borne witness to animal attacks and big birds swooping down from the battlements to protect the house.
It unnerved Lucas but in a moment of male pride he had fallen for Sarah’s scheme to make him see that ghosts were real, and to make sure she could always count on him to do what ever she asked of him she had thrown in the thing about the ring. The ring that was said to have nearly a mystical power to bring luck to its bearer even though it’s late master had been buried young.
`Well better get settled in before dark, it’ll be a long wait´ he thought unpacking his lantern and spreading out his map to locate the chapel. `It’ll be a long night´.
