Chapter 2

Michael Bennett awoke with a start. He'd been dreaming about an old college girlfriend when he was interrupted by another dream. This new dream featured his twin sister on her morning jog, being abducted by a strange man in black. Glancing at the clock, he saw the red glowing numerals declaring 7 a.m. He reached across his nightstand and grabbed the telephone, punching in his sister's number. When the answering machine picked up, he felt a slight trickle of uneasiness penetrate his mind. He pushed it aside; she was probably just down at Dreamers', having some coffee. Quickly, he showered and dressed, deciding to meet her there for a cup.

Dreamers' was a local independent coffee shop and rare bookstore. He'd often perused the stacks there in search of first editions, waiting for Allison to meet him after her jog. Entering the shop, he glanced around for signs of his sister. His gaze took in the murals on the walls, depicting celestial scenes of stars, moons and galaxies. It was almost like entering a time warp; he'd spent much time here studying during his four year term at U.C.L.A. It was much quieter and less crowded than Starbucks, where most of the college crowd gathered, and it hadn't changed over the years. Seeing no sign of Allison, he moved to the counter.

"Heya, Jake..." he called to the middle aged man behind the counter. "Seen Allison this morning?"

"Michael!" Jake exclaimed, a warm look spreading across his slightly lined features. "Speak of the devil...guess what I've just got in for you?" Without waiting for a reply, Jake rushed to the stockroom and emerged with an old, leather-bound volume, its pages yellowing slightly. Handing the book over to Michael, he said, "Sir Jake Taylor presents his compliments to Mr. Michael Bennett." It was a first edition of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Adventures of the Illustrious Client."

Michael smiled ruefully at the sight; since he'd opened his PI firm, Jake had referred to him as "Mr. Holmes," and often inquired about Scotland Yard. "First edition," Michael breathed. "How much is this gem going for?" he asked.

"For you," Jake said with an affectionate smile, "complimentary. Consider it an early birthday gift."

Michael gently leafed through the pages with reverence. "Thank you, Jake. So...have you seen Allison this morning?"

Jake inclined his head in thought. "No...no, she hasn't stopped in yet today."
