A War without End fiction by Setsuna-Jikan

I stood--hunched, really--next to her, bracing my gun on my hip, aiming at the prisoners.

Prisoners.

A few months ago, I might've fought with these men. Joked with them, bunked with them. But now, now they were the enemy.

I felt sick.

"Tell me." Her voice was cold, harsh. The beads and ties in her dark green hair drew the eye, just like the blood red streaks. They were meant to; that way you wouldn't see it when she rammed a knife between your ribs and carved out your organs. She kicked one of the captives between the shoulders, knocking him down, gun staying trained on his head. She repeated, "Tell. Me."

The man she kicked down cursed, spitting out blood. "Fuck you, bitch. Whore. You and your entire cunt forces are going to fucking lose. Slut," he sneered, voice thick with righteous disdain. I kicked him this time.

"Shut up, solider," I said lowly, voice icy. "If you hadn't noticed, you're at our mercy right now. Insulting us is not the way to go." He snorted.

"Gay faggot. Betcha your lover's somewhere knitting you a fucking pink sweater you fucking fairy bastard," he said calmly. Like I was shit. I arched a brow, smacking him in the head.

"I said shut up."

The one on the far right spoke up. "Please, listen to me," she said, voice plaintive under her fatigue. "I have kids. Two little girls. If you're going to kill me, please swear that you'll rescue them."

--"Please, if you have to kill me, please, please rescue them. Please."--

I felt the blood drain from my face.

Shingaisha strolled over to the woman, looking at her coldly. "You'll be locked up for five days. During that time, we will send scouts out to check out the address you will give us. If it isn't a trap, we'll get your kids back. If it is a trap, however, you will die in the most painful matter we can arrange." She nodded at another guard, stepping back so they could drag her out.

"Anyone else?" The three men and two women remaining just glared at her hatefully. She looked up, icy-blue eyes staring deep into my grey/blue ones. I could see the sickness, the utter hatred for what we were about to do next.

She stepped back, gun swinging up with ease, synched with my own. As one, we fired, starting from opposite ends as we executed them, one by one.

I wanted to throw up.

She walked across the bodies, boots squelching in the blood. She stopped in front of me, arm out stretched.

"I'm sorry," she whispered, face sad. My arms reached out to hold her tight, just standing there, amidst the carnage. I buried my face in her neck, sobbing quietly as she stood with me.

AN: Wrote this while watching Why We Fight, episode nine of Band of Brothers. There’s this short scene where Replacement O’Keefe watches an Allied solider shoot three kneeling German captives in the head. One two three.

Characters are mine.

Sets, out.
