~Chapter 2~
Talian awoke slowly, his long eyelashes lifting to reveal intense deep green eyes. He shifted his muscular body in the soft bed, a frown of confusion crossing his visage as he fully took in his surroundings. He was not sure where he was. Embers from a fire smoldered in the hearth of the modest room, and healing supplies rested on the table next to the bed. There were no other indications as to who the occupant of the home was, although a hazy memory of a kind female voice offering him comfort hovered on the edge of his thoughts.
Sitting up and spreading his powerful white wings, the warrior extended his hands, surprised that they were not covered in blood. He looked down at his chest disbelievingly as he realized that he was no longer wounded or in pain.
How had he gotten here? The last thing that he remembered clearly was when he had fallen in battle, clutching the sword that protruded from his chest in a desperate attempt to remove it before he had ultimately lost consciousness.
Rays of sunlight were starting to crest over the horizon, casting warmth upon the world and illuminating what was once enshrouded in darkness. The warrior angel shielded his eyes as the door was opened, causing bright sunlight to spill into the room.
“You have awakened,” an older angel observed incredulously. The superior healer closed the door so that Talian was no longer assailed by the blinding light. “How do you feel?” she asked in concern.
He lowered his hand and fixed his gaze upon her. “Like I have come back from the dead,” he said with reverence. “I have heard of the tremendous healing powers that some of our kind possess, but this…” his voice trailed off in disbelief as he looked down at his fully healed body. “My wounds should have been fatal.”
“It was not your time to depart from this world,” she smiled as she approached his bedside. She placed a hand on his cheek. “Now, arise, and join your fellow warriors. They have been informed of your condition and await your return.” The kind angel walked toward the doorway, satisfied that the warrior had recovered completely.
“Wait,” Talian called out. Memories of the night before had conveyed a different voice to him in his greatest time of need. The healer turned around questioningly. “I must know the name of the one who healed me. I want to speak to her and repay her kindness.”
“Her name is Calandra, and she only did her duty. I would advise against pursuing the matter further,” the angel said distractedly. “Now, go. There are others who have fallen in battle that I must look after.”
Talian stood from the bed, his large white wings extending from his powerfully muscular frame. He frowned. The angel who had healed him, Calandra, had not merely been doing her duty. Her body had possessed a healing power, but it was her kind voice and her gentle touch that had convinced him to fight for his life when his body had been wracked with such excruciating pain. He bowed respectfully to the older angel, folding his massive wings behind him. Adjusting the garment that covered his lower body, he slung his encased sword over his shoulder and confidently walked outside to greet a new day.

Calandra sighed softly as she gazed across the vast expanse of the peaceful lake that was nestled in the heart of the forest. She came here often when she had thoughts that she needed to sort out. The warm, hard surface of the sun-kissed rock that she sat on was a contrast to the refreshingly cool feel of the water that she dangled her feet into. Her filmy white form-fitting dress was gathered up around her knees so that it would not get wet, and her long blonde hair tumbled down her back to brush against her slender waist. Her pure white wings were extended to shade her fair skin from the intensity of the sun’s rays.
The angel’s pale blue eyes held a faraway, wistful look to them. She could not stop thinking about the wounded warrior who had fallen into her care. It had been three days since she had awoken from the realm of unconsciousness to discover that he was no longer residing in the camp. In her heart, she knew that she would never see him again, although she yearned to.
Calandra knew that there was something different about him from the moment that she had healed him, a deeper connection that she had felt with no other. It was almost as if when she had merged her life’s energy with his, she had felt a deep sense of comfort and love. Almost as if he was someone who would cherish and protect her no matter what. She closed her eyes, trying to banish these whimsical thoughts of something that could never be. The healer had to get back to work. She could not entertain such fantasies about an angel who she knew nothing about. She did not even know if the warrior was even alive. Her superior would tell her nothing of the outcome of her battle for his life.
A slight movement from behind her caused the pretty angel to turn her head in alarm. She had been so lost in her thoughts that she had failed to notice the approach of another in this wooded sanctuary.
Calandra turned around completely and gasped in surprise. There before her stood the most gorgeous angel that she had ever laid eyes upon. He was magnificently resplendent, every perfect masculine feature bathed in the sunlight. His muscular chest, rock-hard abdomen, and broad shoulders were revealed by his simple attire that only covered his lower body. Shoulder-length honey blonde hair framed his kind face, and his eyes revealed a stunning intensity that resonated within their jade depths. A heated blush crept upon her cheeks as she quickly looked away. This angel seemed so familiar somehow, although she knew that she had never spoken with him before.
“I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to startle you,” Talian spoke gently. “You are Calandra, the healer, are you not?” As no protest came from her lips, the strong warrior continued in his deep, cultured voice. “My name is Talian, and I am forever indebted to you.” He bowed respectfully, his eyes never leaving hers.
“I’m afraid I don’t understand,” she murmured in confusion. “We’ve never met before.” Even as the words left her lips, something familiar about him that she couldn’t place still lingered in the back of her mind.
Talian moved closer to her, taking one of her hands in his own larger one as his eyes searched the depths of hers intently. “They’re green. My eyes are green.”
A radiant smile spread across his handsome features as her eyes lit up in disbelieving recognition. There was only one angel who would have remembered her inquiry. Her eyes glistened with the shimmer of unshed tears as Calandra extended her hand to rest tenderly against his cheek. “The fallen warrior… you’ve survived. I was afraid that I wouldn’t be strong enough to heal you,” she confessed.
“As I fought for my life, I heard your voice, and it strengthened me. No one has ever been willing to sacrifice so much to save me. My wounds should have been fatal, but I stand before you now because of your kindness. I was compelled to find you and to offer you my allegiance.” His eyes ignited with an inner fire as he spoke, becoming more impassioned as he remembered all that she had helped him through. “No one has ever gone through so much to help me before at the risk of their own life. No one.”
The healer angel rewarded him with a shy smile. “It is not necessary. I only used the gifts that were bestowed upon me to heal you. You have the heart of a champion. You possess such strength of spirit. I only wished to strive to match the honor and compassion that your whole being radiated. I could do no less for such a noble warrior.”
Talian smiled in return as he helped her to stand. He placed both of his hands around her waist, standing so close that she could feel the heat from his body, hear the beat of his heart echoing her own. The warrior angel leaned down, his voice low and husky, and whispered, “Thank you.”
Entranced, Calandra closed her pale blue eyes as his lips descended upon her own. His kiss was tender, loving, possessing a strong undercurrent of passion that sent a tingling sensation coursing throughout her entire body. She hesitantly wrapped her arms around his neck and stood on her tiptoes, pressing closer against his strong, hard body.
Talian reveled in the taste and feel of the beautiful angel wrapped within his arms. From the moment he had seen her, he had been compelled to offer his allegiance and protection, but he had not been expecting to experience feelings this deep for the healer. He could not explain it, but somehow he knew that he wanted her by his side, always.
His majestic wings unfurled and wrapped around her, enclosing her in the comfort of the soft, white feathers as his grip on her tightened. The warrior angel extended his tongue and gently captured her lower lip between his own, his caress drawing forth a soft moan from her. His tongue delved inside of her hot, succulent mouth as he kissed her deeply, passionately. It was as if he couldn’t get enough of her. She was intoxicating, driving him to a plane of bliss that he had never before experienced the intensity of.
Calandra was drowning in waves of ecstasy, assailed by unfamiliar emotions. Never in her life had she been kissed so deeply, so thoroughly, so completely. Never. She moaned softly into his mouth, clutching at him desperately as her knees weakened. The feelings that he was evoking in her were ones that she had never even dared to dream about, lest they reach the depths of her very soul and change inexplicably who she was.
The way he held her, so lovingly, as he continued to ravish her mouth, was her undoing. Her body began to glow with a faint white light, increasing in intensity with each passing moment. She felt so hot, as if she was going to burst into flames at any moment. It was as if her body was not her own, and it frightened her. Suddenly unable to catch her breath, Calandra broke the kiss and looked up at the breathtakingly handsome warrior angel. Her features had taken on a beautiful flush, and she was trembling, her heart racing.
Talian opened his deep green eyes in surprise, and his expression became one of concern as he noticed her panicked state. His chest rose and fell as his body took in much-needed air. He loosened his grip so that she stood at an arm‘s length again, his wings unfolding, although his hands never left her waist.
“This cannot be,” Calandra whispered in protest at his inquiring gaze. “I-I’m sorry. I don’t understand what’s happening. I barely know you. Farewell.” With that, she slipped out of his embrace and fled from the forest, not daring to look back, her body trembling with both exhilaration and fear. In her heart, she knew that she could never see him again.
Talian stood still for a moment, a puzzled frown crossing his handsome features. He watched her go, determination replacing his previous expression. It didn’t matter what he had to do to get her back, how he was going to have to prove to her that what she was feeling was echoed within his own heart. A gentle breeze lifted his honey hair from his countenance and gently caressed his wings. He strode toward the path that she had taken in her haste. With a reminiscent smile, he shouldered his sword and spread his wings, vowing, “I knew that you weren’t going to give up on me, Calandra. No matter what, I’m not giving up on you.”
