Closer in Bliss

The radio clicked on at 6:30 a.m., and Charlotte had to practically fall out of bed in order to get to school. She didn't feel like putting on her uniform, that gray blazer and skirt seemed to match her apathy. She just wished she could just lie in bed all day, and then maybe shop. Since summer was quickly approaching, it was becoming harder and harder to concentrate on her studies. Not that she needed to. The teachers were feeling equally as carefree, giving them petty assignments to keep them busy.

She met Brae by her locker. "Ugh, doesn't Monday just suck?" She wrapped her brown curl around her finger. Charlotte agreed. "Totally, this is more annoying than Cotilion." Her perspective changed completely as she saw Brandon approach her. "Co-what?" Brae sighed. "It's a debutante thing, Brandon."
"Yeah, be lucky you never went through it." He laughed and pulled Charlotte to him, and she was able to get a strong scent of his Lacoste cologne. "Wow." She whispered, and lifted her head to look at him. "So I heard your Bovary paper got high marks. Congrats!"
"Thanks, Brandon, though Mr. Wilkins disapproved of me saying it was all about the sex."
Brae, getting restless, decided to leave. "Yep, such is life. Later Char." She waved goodbye, and continued her talk with Brandon. "Well that's awesome you got a good grade, we should celebrate tonight. The Ivy at 7?" She loved the Ivy, celebrities were in there all the time, but being a Hollywood resident by birth, she never felt the need to bother them for an autograph. It was like she saw them everyday, shopping in grocery stores and maxing out credit cards like everybody else. "Sounds great Brandon, I'd like that." He grinned. "Sweet. I'll pick you up at 7." They had to get to class, so they parted ways, him giving her one last smile before turning around. "Sounds like a date, then." She skipped to class.

Her mom leaned in the doorframe of her bedroom. "Heard you have a big date tonight! You look gorgeous, by the way." Charlotte smiled at her reflection, her big blonde curls went down her back, free from any hair ribbons of barrettes. She wore a sleek black dress, that cut low enough for him to notice but to pass the mom-inspection. "Well don't get too crazy, now." Her mom laughed, and then the phone rang. She rushed to grab it, leaving Charlotte with her own swirling thoughts. She applied some Yves Saint Laurent, gave the mirror a little half-smile, and drove off to the Hills.

She was at the restaurant in no time, still freaking out on the phone with Brae as she parked in valet. She clicked her Blackberry off as she tossed the attendant the keys. Brandon was waiting for her at the door inside, handing her a red rose. "Hey beautiful."
"Hey handsome." He leaned over, kissing her politely on the cheek. She gazed into his brown eyes, remembering when she met Brandon for the first time four years ago in a coffee shop. She would never have guessed he would be taking her out on a romantic dinner like this. They had been friends for so long, would it even be possible to start a relationship? And he was leaving so soon.. Charlotte shook her head, she was doing it again. Whenever someone got too close, she pushed him away, afraid of.. what? She was fairly certain she needed this boy... it was what she had sought after all along.

The pair was seated at a private table, the dimly lit restauraunt echoed faintly with light chatter. She didn't even look around to see if Orlando Bloom or Charlize Theron had decided to dine that night.. she did however look at Brandon. Studying everything about him, wondering what the rest of the night had in store for her.

They made small talk at first- school, the food, parties. She hardly felt like it was her in that seat, like she was watching someone else. Everything seemed so blurry, but to snapped back to reality when Brandon leaned in to her, putting his hand on hers. "Here's the thing, Charlotte. I really like you, you seem so down to earth and all." She smiled slightly, hardly able to believe her ears. She did like him, so she said what came most naturally. "I've liked you all along, Brandon." He smiled that famous smile of his, and she felt like everything was going to be okay. "And I have something to tell you when we get outside." He paid for the bill then took her by the hand out into the city. The city lights were glittering so brightly, the stars merely an afterthought. She looked into his face empathetically looking for answers, then understood. "You got into Columbia." His face broke into a grin. "You are unbelievable. Yes! I'm going to New York!" Her face mirrored his, she was happy for him, this was his dream school. "Congratulations!" She jumped into his arms, and he stared at her deeply for a moment before locking her in a passionate kiss. Electricity seemed to course through her entire body, and when he put her back down she was dazed. "I know what you're thinking. I'm going across the country in a few months. But that doesn't change how I feel about you, Charlotte. I want to be with you, and I want us to spend the summer together. And I when I go to New York.." She put her finger to his lips. "I feel the same way." He kissed her again. She felt doubtful about the whole long-distance relationship thing at first, but who knew? This summer had to the potential to be one she would never forget.
