Leaving Home
A young lady lays flowers down on two graves side by side. She takes off the glasses that cover her emerald eyes. The year is now 1826. The little girl who walked away with the man was me. I pull my hood off my head and show my curly ruby red hair to my shoulders, to goes down a lot further than that. It has been ten years since that awful night in 1816. I am now 16 years old and a trained vampire hunter. Many try and hunt down vampires but do not succeed because they do not have the power to hunt them. I was born with powers similar to that of the vampires. Not many of us are born but when we are and our powers emerge it sends a signal to the closest hunter. The powers include mind control, super strength, being able to heal quickly and some others. The only thing that we don’t have is the ability to shape shift, shy away from crosses, holy water and the sun. I wear a choker around my neck to hid Alexander’s marks and sunglasses so vampire’s human connections cannot see my eyes.
"Mother, father. It is me Carlotta Victoria. Well I am all grown up; I am going to America to hunt those whom killed you. I have saved many lives, I know you probably do not approve but this is my birthright. Maybe I will come back to London some day. Good bye." I say and make the sign of the cross on me. I stand up, I am now 5’5" and I turn and find Andrew. He trained me from that night on. He is now ten years older and has gray hair.
"Andrew." I say walking up to him.
"I knew you would be here Carlotta. Are you ready to leave?" He asks.
"Yes I leave tomorrow. The council still wants it?" I ask.
"Yea." He says. There is a council whom say who gets trained, and whom gets the help asked for.
"Well then I guess I have no say then." I say as we walk out of the cemetery. I replace my sunglasses and my hood. Andrew puts his sunglasses on to. Actually all hunters are required to wear them to hid their eyes. He also dons a hat. We walk down the street. "What are you going to do while I am gone?"
"Probably train another hunter. Your training is complete that is why the council is placing you somewhere. From what I heard Alexander is in America." Andrew says.
"That is impossible he would rather stay somewhere like France, England, Spain, Italy. Not somewhere as wild and untamed as America." I say as we turn and walk up some stairs to a house. Andrew opens the door and we walk in.
"Yes well the news is that he wanted some more excitement in his life so he chose America." Andrew says taking off his coat, hat and sunglasses. He then takes my cape and sunglasses.
"Yes well give me the civilized streets of London please rather than the uncivilized America any day." I say.
"There are a lot more vampires there to kill than here. This is more or less a training ground not a hunting ground." Andrew says. "As it is the vampire numbers are dwindling down quickly and not many hunters are being revealed. It might be time for me to move on to somewhere else." He is lying, not many hunters are being revealed at all. Some are being killed at birth, some how the vampires have found some way to detect the powers in the hunters when they are born. Others are being killed before they can kill there first vampire in which is what sends out the vibrations of a new hunter.
"If that is what needs to happen." I say as we walk in to the living room and sit down. A man with white hair and blue eyes walks in, this is our servant Jacob, and he was here long before I became Andrews’s student. He has seen a lot of hunters come and go.
"Would you your tea now or later?" Jacob asks.
"Now please." Andrew says Jacob leaves the room to get the tea.
"I am going to miss him." I say watching the old servant leave the room.
"He is going to miss you as well my dear." Andrew says. "As will I."
"Did the council say where I am going to be living?" I ask.
"That is the thing. You will be traveling the country. Not many have settled in any one place. Most of them are in what they call the Wild West." Andrew says.
"What about other hunters?" I ask.
"There are none. You are it." Andrew says.
"There is no way I can do that for an entire country." I say.
"The council thinks you can. You have trained with me and I think you can do this to." He says.
"You all are insane." I simply say.
"Yea we both know." Andrew says as Jacob brings in the tea, serves it and leaves. I laugh at the joke. Andrew pours me a cup and hands it to me.
"I wonder if Alexander even remembers me." I say looking in to my cup.
"Of course he does, your blood courses through him still. He will always remember you because of your blood." Abraham says.
"I am going out for on last ride here in London. I will be back later." I say standing up, walk from the room and walk up the stairs. I enter the second door on the left. The room is decorated in pastels the last thing any one would think a vampire hunter would reside in a room like this. But to everyone, but hunters, Abraham and I are uncle and niece. I take off the dress, put on a white shirt, black trousers, black knee boots, I pull my hair up and put on a black hat. I walk out of the room and down the stairs where Marco the butler is standing with my cloak and sword. "Thank you Marco." I say as I strap on my sword around my waist and he places my cloak on my shoulders.
"Please be careful." Marco says as he hands me my gloves.
"I will be." I say putting my gloves on and walking to the door. I leave the house and let out a sharp whistle. A horse whines in the night. A huge black stallion appears from the night as if he is apart of it. The horse is saddled and rained. He charges at me when he gets near enough to me I put my hand out. The horse passes and I grab the reins and launch myself in to the seat. I pat the horse’s head and speak gently in to its ear. "Good Midnight Dancer. Let us have one more ride in our home before we leave it behind." The horse whines softly and does not miss a step. We race through the night. Of course there are no vampires in the city because they are either dead or they have moved on to another hunting ground so Midnight Dancer and I have a peaceful ride. We return to the house three hours later. I let Midnight Dancer go. He is allowed to roam free instead of being locked up in a stable most of the time because he is apart of me and I am apart of him through a ritual. If he dies I die and if I die, he dies as well. I walk back in to the house. Marco opens the door. "You did not have to stay up."
"It is alright. I did not mind. Besides this is the last night I get to do this. I will miss you." Marco says taking my things.
"I will miss you too. Well I have to be off to bed. Good night." I say walking up the stairs. I walk in to my room and quickly shed off my clothes. I crawl in to my bed, the last I will see of one for a while, and go to sleep.
The next day is filled with activity packing and good byes were the chores. Just before the sun hits its highest peek Andrew and I stand on the pier by the ship I will be aboard. "Well this is it. How do you feel?" He asks.
"Scared, excited. But I guess that is to be expected." I say.
"Yea. But I would be excited to you are going to anew world for hunters. You will be the first there and the only one for a while. I know at least one new hunter will be born while you are there." He says.
"But I have never trained another." I say.
"But there was a time when I said that to. When the time comes you will know what to do. Just like you knew what to do when you became a hunter." He says. "The information will flash in to your mind."
"What if I do something wrong?" I ask.
"Trial and error. That is all I can say." He says.
The boarding whistle blows. "Well this is it. Thank you Andrew for all you have given me."
"Thank you as well, you have breathed new life in to this old hunter." He says. He quickly digs under his cloak. "Here take this." He pulls out a small ring box. I open it, with in there is a gold ring with a stake made out of an emerald. "The council had it made for you." He takes off his right glove to show his ring on his ring finger. I quickly take off my right glove. Andrew takes the ring from the box and my right hand. "This ring I bestow upon you signifies you have completed your training. Wear it proudly for you are a vampire hunter Raven and always will be." He says putting the ring on my finger. Raven is my hunting name all hunters are named after animals.
"Thank you Viper I will make you proud." I say after he lets go of my hand. I put my glove back on and whistle. Midnight Dancer emerges from the crowd and stops in front of me. "Good bye Andrew."
"Good bye Carlotta Victoria." He says. He has not called me that since the night he took me to become a vampire hunter. I quickly walk to the boarding plank and walk up with Midnight Dancer by my side. Andrew and I had a hell of a time to get the captain to let me take the horse on the ship and stay in my cabin. Midnight Dancer and I stay on deck until we set sail. I watch as the shore got smaller and smaller until it was gone.
"Well this is it. We are gone. We are on our way to America." I say to Midnight Dancer. He simply whines, stamps a foot, tosses his head back and twitches his tail. I laugh and we walk to our cabin.
