The Woman
Chapter 2
She walked down the street, glancing behind her now and then to make sure there was no one there. She needed to find a safe place, she thought as she continued to walk down the street. She knew she should of went to a big city but this place was in the middle of no where, who would think that she would be hiding in some no name town in Wisconsin of all places. She looked ahead and saw more shops and people walking. She continued on her way, she briefly heard some people talking about the big hotel in the town, that brought a lot of business to the town. This place might be good enough, she thought as the hotel came into view. She stopped short as she took in the breath taking view, the hotel sat in front of the Nicolet National forest, it was amazing. It was huge, it was perfect!
She walked toward the building, not looking around at all. It seemed as if this place had some sort of hold over her, it was just gorgeous, it looked like a castle right out of medieval times. It even had taller sides on the end, with the cone shaped roof, and flags flying high. It was just amazing. She started walking up the stairs and finally entered the building. She took another step and stopped in awe, it was amazing, it really was. She took yet another and ran right into a man that was walking toward the door. She dropped her bag and gasped as she scrambled to gather her things together before anyone noticed her. She glanced up as the guy stooped to help her then quickly glanced away, she didn’t want to make friends while she was here, she just needed a place to stay for a while. She grabbed the last of her things, stood and made her way to the registration desk. The lady was on the phone, glancing around as she spoke, she glanced at her and then went back to her conversation.
She hung up the phone, smiled, “How may I help you.” She asked.
“I need a room, please,” She replied, glancing at the name tag, her name was Jenny.
“Yes, ma’am, we have one available on the 5th floor, would that be alright?” Jenny asked.
“um, yea, that should be fine.” She replied.
“Name please,”
She stared at Jenny, thinking.
“Ma’am, I need a name.”
“Oh, sorry, I’m just really tired, I’m Susie Mitchell.” She told her.
“Okay, Ms. Mitchell, it will be $100 for 2 nights, how many nights are you planning on staying with us here.”
“Um, I’m not sure, can I let you know after tonight.”
“Sure you can, here’s your key, sign here please, will that be check or charge.”
“Cash,” Susie said as she signed the register, “thank you” she said as she grabbed the key and went toward the elevator.
She got on it with a sigh of relief that she was the only one going up for the moment, she rode it to the fourth floor, got off then took the steps the rest of the way to the fifth floor, she walked the entire floor before she made her way to her room, which was in the middle of the floor near the elevator and about 25 feet from the door to the stairs. It was perfect. She opened her door, to find a living room set up with a couch and 2 chairs, a TV and a small bar area; after there was a queen sized bed. It was wonderful, she walked to the window and looked out, it was beautiful, a breath taking view of the forest and the hills behind the hotel. There was a long stretch of lawn before the forest began but it looked as if the trees were looking down on her offering comfort to her. She turned away from there and moved to the bathroom, she was in shock once again, it was huge, about half the size of the room itself, with a full bath and a separate shower. She filled the bath as she pulled clothes out of her bag, she needed to watch them so they were not as dirty as they were now from her travels.
Once her clothes were in the bathtub soaking away the grim and dirt from traveling, she stepped into the shower to wash away her own. It has been a long 5 days, she thought as she stood under the spray. The taxi, the plane, the hitch hiking, the worry, the fear. The fear was the worst, she thought. It was definitely the worst, and it wasn’t just fear for her life, it was fear of what they would do when they found her. It was horrible, she knew, she had been around them long enough to know she would die a slow, very slow death, if they even thought to kill her. They were the type to play first, make you seem like you had hope then steadily crush them as days went by. The most horrendous gang ever to dominate the streets of Campbell. She should of known better when she met that man and he had seemed too good to be true.

She walked the streets on her way home from the bar, she was 21 but had been on her own since she could remember. Her father, well she had no clue as to who he was, her mother was a drunken whore who used her body to collect what little money she could get only to spend it on alcohol. She was a product of one of those encounters. So she did what she had to do, which was a lot more than her mother had ever had. She had finished school and was working full time and saving money so she could go to college in the fall. She was still a product of her upbringing, not that it mattered in most situation, she wore clothes that were old but they made them work for her, she bought fabric and designed her own things most of the time so that she could have some clothes that were fashionable.
So she was on her way home, the bar was only about 5 blocks from the apartment she rented with her mom, she paid all the bills and her mother never knew when she was home or not, so it really didn’t matter that she was a little drunk herself as she wandered down the street. The lamps were on and she stumbled a little in her heels, but all in all it was a beautiful night, she was laughing as she rounded the corner and came face to face with a man. She stepped back, then tried to go around.
“Well hey pretty lady, how you doing tonight,” The guy asked as her stepped in front of her.
“I’m going home, excuse me,” She told him as she tried to step around him again.
“Oh but it’s early yet, how bout you join me in a little fun down the alley.” He asked.
“No, thanks, I need to be going home.”
“Oh, come on, lady.” He said as he grabbed her arm, he was stronger than he had appeared to be.
“No, let go of me.” She screamed at him as he shoved her up against the building in the alley. It was just out of the shaft of light, in the dark. She squeezed her eyes shut as she pushed at him to try and get away. The struggles seemed to make him more determined to do something. He grabbed her arms as she shoved at him once again, he pulled both up over her head as he grabbed her top and tried to rip it away from her. His breath reeked of alcohol so she knew he was drunk as hell. She yelled at him again as he tugged on her clothes again, he stepped back far enough for her to resituate her legs as he tried again to get her shirt off of her somehow. As he stepped forward, she raised her knee. He howled as he went down on his knees, she raised her knee again and heard him scream once more as he fell over completely. She ran, what else was she going to do but run, so she did. Out of the alley onto the side walk and right into traffic, well a parked car at least. The light was red, and she ran right into the front of the car and lay sprawled across the windshield. Heaving she laid there, trying not to black out from the ordeal. She heard a voice scream from behind her, as she picked herself up off the car, she glanced behind her and saw the guy from the alley making his way toward her. She stood as the same time the door opened from the car and 4 guys got out. She glanced at the car and realized it was not just a car but a stretch limo that she had chosen to molest with her body. She wasn’t sure what she was going to do next, the bum was getting closer to her and the people from the car were staring at her. She took a step and someone grabbed her arm, she turned to see one of the greatest looking guys she had seen in her life time. He pulled her close and told the guy next to him, “Deal with him,” and the guy took a step in the direction of the bum.
He continued to hold her arm as he moved toward the door of the limo, it opened and he pushed her to get inside.
“Wait, a minute, I’m not getting in this car with you, I don’t know you.” She exclaimed.
“I’m Jake and you are?” He asked.
“Rachel. What are they going to do to him?”
“He attacked you, didn’t he? Why does it matter?”
“Yes, he attacked me but he doesn’t deserve to be. . .”
“To be what, my dear?”
“beat up.”
“And why is that?”
“He’s drunk, he probably doesn’t know what he is doing”
“And that excuses him for what he was thinking of doing to you.”
“No, but. . .”
“Don’t worry about it, they are just helping him home.”
“Oh. . . And what are you doing?”
“I’m going to help you home also.”
“I can walk, it’s just over that way.”
“But why walk when I can take you there. It would be safer.”
“Safer? How safe is it to be with a stranger, or make that four strange men.”
“We can get to know one another.”
“How?”
“Talking.”
“That’s all?”
“Yes, you’re a child nothing will happen to you.”
“I am not a child, I’m 21 years old!”
“Wonderful, now Rachel would you like a ride home in comfort?”
“Okay.”
He gestured for her to get into the car and she did. From there it escalated to being the weirdest relationship she had ever been a part of.

She got out of the shower, with tears running down her face, if only she had never walked home or gone to the bar that night everything would have been fine forever. She grabbed the robe then walked into the main room. She drew the robe together and tighten it as she grabbed the phone to order something to eat. Soon after she got off the phone, she went back into the bathroom and scrubbed her clothes as she heard a knock on the door. She sighed as she got up and went to look through the peep hole. Some man in a denim shirt was standing there.
“Who is it,” She asked.
“I’m C.K. Walker, owner.”
“Oh, hold on.” She said as she glanced around the room, there was nothing showing. She quickly opened the door and stepped back as the man entered.
“Can I do something for you Mr. Walker,” She asked.
“Yes, you can. Why are you here under a fake name.” He asked bluntly.
“Excuse me?”
“Your name is fake, why”
“I assure you, Mr. Walker, my name is Susie Mitchell.”
“Then why was this found in the lobby, with your photo.” He said as he held up her drivers license.
“It’s not mine,” Susie said as she reached to grab hold of it.
“Look, if it is or isn’t is not the issue, I don’t appreciate having myself or my staff lied to. Now why did you lie.”
“I had to!” She exclaimed, “ I can’t be found.”
“By who? An ex husband, a husband, a boy friend?”
“God, no, he’s worse then all of those put together.”
“then what is he, a lover”
“I guess, you could say that, but he wasn’t mine. He was the boss. I can’t tell you about it, you don’t need to be involved.”
“I am involved if you are planning on staying here.”
“I’ll leave as soon as my clothes are done, I promise.”
“Clothes?”
“I’m washing my clothes, I just need a place to rest, please!”
“One night, then you are out of here.”
“I promise.”
“Good night, Ms. Mitchell.” He said as he opened the door to room service.
“Good night, Mr. Walker.” She said as she eyed the room service attendant, then glanced at the owner again as he walked out of the room.
The room service man left within seconds after Mr. Walker. Rachel sat down and ate as much as she could then grabbed a container from her bag, she rinsed it out then placed some of the food she had left over in the container. If she had to leave she wanted to be prepared for her journey. She went back into the bathroom and finished her clothes then put them around the room for them to dry. She wheeled the cart out to the hallway then closed and locked the door, she moved a chair over to hold the door, then moved to the bed. She laid down and turned on the tv, within minutes her eyes were closed. Never once did the thought that Mr. C.K. Walker still had her drivers license come into her mind.
She walked down the street, glancing behind her now and then to make sure there was no one there. She needed to find a safe place, she thought as she continued to walk down the street.
