One Month Later

One month later….

Cheyenne was bundled up in her coat and scarf, making her way down the crowded city streets as she furiously typed out on her phone. Her friend, Melissa, had been texting her all day about her latest date with Jonathan Halt and how awful he had been in bed. Cheyenne could not help but laugh at Melissa. She would not stop ranting about the noises he had made and his idea of foreplay. Melissa almost was tempted to finish the job herself. The keyword was almost. Once he had fallen asleep, she had run out of there as fast as she could. She did not need a round two when he woke up.

With her chestnut hair flying around her face, Cheyenne entered a Starbucks where Melissa was sitting and furiously texting away another message. Her jet black hair was pulled back in a sleek ponytail and she looked as fashionable as ever in a suede tan coat, Hermes scarf and sleek, tan pants. A large white and green coffee cup was set on the table in front of her along with a pastry and scattered papers. Suppressing a giggle, Cheyenne snuck up behind her as quietly as she could and discreetly placed the phone near Melissa’s ear. Once she sent her text, Cheyenne’s phone went off and sent her flying a mile in the air. Cheyenne burst out laughing and Melissa waved her fist menacingly at the tinier girl.

“Jeez. You scared the shit out of me! Why didn’t you tell me you were two seconds away? I feel like an idiot sending this stuff to you if I can just tell you in person!”

“That is simple. It more fun for me.” Cheyenne laughed and walked away as Melissa pretended to kick her.

“Get your tea, girl. I have so much more to tell you.” Chuckling, Cheyenne unraveled her scarf from around her neck. Her long, unkempt hair fell in tangled waves around her bulky shoulders. Patrick, the barista, took one glance at her and was already to take her money. Cheyenne rolled her eyes. You know when you go to a place too much….After paying and getting her Chai tea, Cheyenne took the empty seat across from Melissa, who was furiously typing again in her phone. Sipping her tea gingerly, Cheyenne picked up one of Melissa’s papers and began to read the notes on it. Both her and Melissa were studying for a degree in English and met in their first year of college. After that they had tried to take the same classes so they could study and struggle together. They even began to live together a few months ago just to make it even easier. Yet with Melissa job at a fashion magazine and Cheyenne working as a server, their schedules conflicted outside of class as well.

“Okay.” Cheyenne looked up as Melissa shoved her phone into her bag.

“Okay. So, spill. I know you are dying too.”

“First, have you heard from Luke?” Cheyenne’s good mood faded and she stared at the hot cup. Why did she have to bring that up? She barely heard from Luke for nearly a month. Maybe a vague email here and there but other than that he had simply retreated from reality. Even his mother said that she barely saw her son. He was usually locked up in his room, dead to the world outside the glow of his computer. Yes, Luke had done something somewhat like this before when he got World of Warcraft but he never neglected Cheyenne, school or work to do so.

“No. His mom is really worried. He barely comes out and when he does…I don’t know. She says he seems like a zombie…a content zombie but just not aware of anything else and empty and haggard. He hasn’t been eating or sleeping much.”

“Boys! A new video game or porn site and you won’t see them for the longest time. It is a phase, shy, do not worry about it. He will come out of it.” It was obvious Melissa was only partial interested. Or maybe she was positive that was the case or she noticed Cheyenne’s discomfort. Whatever the case, she was shortening it up.

“I guess you are right.” Yet it did not help the sinking feeling forming in the pit of her stomach. Cheyenne quickly changed the subject before she became sick. “So tell me about Jonathan Halt.”

“Well…” Melissa seemed half-heartedly reluctant to change the conversation but she quickly moved on. “Nice looking. Oh my God, the boy is beautiful to look at and his equipment wasn’t bad either. About seven inches and thick yet he did not know how to use it.”

Cheyenne giggled as Melissa reviewed everything she had told her over the phone but in greater detail. Unlike Melissa, Cheyenne had not been with many boys. She lost her virginity to her sophomore boyfriend, one of the worst decisions of her life, and then there had been Luke. She did not have much to compare to like Melissa did expect Luke was better. Yet she let Melissa talk about every date she had been on and whether they had been good. Male or female, Melissa wasn’t exactly picky.

“Then he is calling me, baby. I swear, he forgot must have forgotten my name and…” Before she could finish her sentence, every cell phone went off simultaneously. Several different rings and various songs went off. There was a murmur of uncertainty from everyone as they fumbled through their purses and pockets to find their phone. It was amazing how many people own cell phone, Cheyenne commented mentally as she looked around before her phone vibrated against her thigh. Melissa already had her phone out and was inspecting it solemnly. There was a rumble of confusion from everyone in Starbucks. Cheyenne flipped open her phone and read the text.

“What the fuck is this,” Melissa cursed. She leaned over and handed Cheyenne her phone and took Cheyenne’s out of her hand. The number, name and message were almost identical except the name had a number (145) and it simply asked if she would like to paradise. It even had the crypt message about disconnecting. Disconnecting to what? The internet, Cheyenne wondered. It did not make sense and obvious they weren’t the only ones. All the conversation revolved around the unexplained occurrence. Cheyenne took her phone away from Melissa and turned it off before shoving it into her pocket. The uneasy feeling was sinking in her stomach again and she felt slightly nauseas.

“It is a virus…or some geek’s prank.” Melissa rationalized, shaking her head as she fiddled with her phone before putting it back into her purse. “You okay?”

“Yeah,” Cheyenne replied, snapping out of her reverie. She grabbed a stack of papers as Melissa watched her with a peculiar look across her pretty features. “I’m fine. Come on…let’s get some stuff done.”
