Chapter Thirteen

~*~

Later that night

Rowan was standing in the club waiting for Garret to show up for our date and drinking a Coke when a pair of male hands slid over her hips coming to rest around her waist and pulling her against a strong chest. “If that isn’t you, Garret, my knee is going to become very acquainted with someone’s groin.”

A low chuckle greeted this threat. “Ouch,” the in question murmured against my neck. “How’s it going?”

“Better now,” she said leaning against his chest.

“I love this outfit,” he purred. “Ya know, I can see directly down your shirt.” she twisted in his arms.

“Excuse me?”

He looked back into her eyes with a wicked smirk. “And what a lovely view it is.”

“Garret-”

“Love you,” he said playfully giving her a quick kiss.

“Kiss up.”

“I am,” he nodded. “Want to dance?”

“You know I don’t dance.”

“Even for me?” he asked.

“I can’t.”

“I could teach you.” He took her hand and led her towards the back of the club, so we were out of sight from everyone else.

“I think you’re just trying to get me alone,” she teased, looking up to meet his eyes.

He grinned. “Always.” He pulled her into his arms. “See, it’s a slow song, easy.” She laid her head on his chest as the song began.

“Whenever I'm weary from the battles that rage in my head
You make sense of madness when my sanity hangs by a thread
I lose my way but still you seem to understand
Now and forever I will be your man.”

“I like this song,” he murmured.

“I’ve always loved it,” she admitted looking up into his eyes. He took the opportunity to touch her lips with his.

“Sometimes I just hold you
Too caught up in me to see
I'm holding a fortune that heaven has given to me
I'll try to show you each and every way I can
Now and forever I will be your man”

“This kinda fits,” he said reaching out and stroking her cheek. She leaned into his palm. “God, you’re beautiful.”

“I love that you think that,” she smiled.

He frowned and shook his head. “Someday, you’re going to realize what a wonderful woman you are, I just hope that you’ll still want to be with me when that happens.”

“Nothing could make me not want you,” she said. He pulled her tightly into his arms.

“God, I wish that were true,” he murmured so softly that even with her enhanced hearing she had to strain to hear him.

“Now I can rest my worries and always be sure
That I won't be alone anymore
If I'd only known you were there all the time
All this time”

“C’mon,” he said shaking his head lightly. “Let’s get out of here.”

“I still say you just want to get me alone,” she accused playfully, wanting to lighten the mood.

“Yes, let’s just go back to my dorm, it’s about time that my roommate stays somewhere else.”

“Nice thought,” she smiled. “Not happening though.”

He nodded. “I figured.” He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and led her towards the exit.

“Until the day the ocean doesn't touch the sand
Now and forever I will be your man
Now and forever I will be your man”

The next morning

“Hey, Nick!” Rowan called as she saw the ‘wolf ahead, about to go into the gym.

“Yes, lady vamp?” he asked leaning against the door. She half expected someone to open the door causing him to fall, but stuff like that didn’t happen to guys like Nick. He was perpetually cool. They had dated briefly in high school, before he had met Maya and she met Jesse. Lady vamp had always been his special nickname for her. Rowan had become like a little sister to him.

“I was kind of wondering why you were so cool with me dating Garret,” she blurted. He looked at her confused before shrugging lightly with a wicked grin.

“Well, I wanted to steal you away and spend a week having hot passionate monkey sex but, hey, we all have our little disappointments.” Rowan just looked at him trying not to laugh. “Garret came to me, before the whole him being “dead” thing. He asked about you. He wanted to know if he stood a chance with you.”

“And you told him-?”

“The truth.”

Always talking in riddles. “Which is?”

“He stood a chance if you would realize that Jesse may be a great guy but was definitely not the person you were meant to be with. It would also help if he would stop being an idiot.”

“Well, the first part worked.”

“He still an idiot?”

“Yep.”

Nick sighed shaking his head. “Ah, well, I tried. Besides, I have heightened senses, I could tell if he had ulterior motives. He seems pretty genuine. What you see is what you get, you know?”

“Thanks,” she said offering him a smile.

“Anytime, lady vamp.” Rowan gave him a quick hug and he went into the gym. She walked back towards the science lab. So Garret had been asking about her. She didn’t know whether to be pleased or annoyed.

Kalena stepped out of the her car looking around carefully. Safe so far. Unlike so many other hunters she held no illusions that you were safe from vampires during the day. They may not be as powerful in the sun but they were powerful enough to do some major damage. She touched the scar on her neck as that thought crossed her mind.

Perhaps this town would be safe. She shouldered her duffle bag and started walked into the hotel. Two hours later and she had settled in and had left to get the scope of the land. It was a college town, she noticed as she watched some girls playing touch football with their boyfriends. Watching them she realized that she sometimes did miss being a normal girl. Not that she had ever really been normal. It was dark as she cut through an alley on her way back to the hotel.

A voice sounded behind her. “Hey, baby, where are ya goin’?”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Around eight, Rowan was walking up towards the library when she heard it. A woman was fighting with, what sounded like, three men. With a sigh she put her book back into her bag. A girl’s work was never done. She prowled slowly towards the scene letting her senses tell the story: pain, alcohol, fear, arousal, anger, and hatred. She leaned against the wall of the alley watching the fight with surprise. The woman was holding her own against four men, until one of them pulled out a gun and another one pulled out a knife.
“Boys, boys, boys,” Rowan drawled playfully. “You four big strong men need all those little toys for one little girl? Tsk, tsk, tsk. That doesn’t really seem to be playing fair.”
“Stay out of this, blondie,” one man with a fraternity cloak on said.
“You don’t like the hair? Now that hurts. And here I was hoping for your approval, so very much. So, what do you think boys? Can you take on two of us?”
“Stay out of this, leech,” the girl snapped not dropping out of her fighting stance for a second.
“Ouch, ya know, you people really need to work on your people skills.” Rowan looked calmly at the girl. /I don’t know how you know what I am or what happened here. What I do know is that I’m going to help you. Whether you like it or not./
/Get out of my head!/
/Touchy./
