Part Two
I sat back from the computer and looked at the clock. It was well past nine and I had been sitting there for hours. I had come straight home after visiting with Serah at the nursing home. I remembered how she was after the funerals.
She’d seemed okay the first few weeks, then her condition rapidly deteriorated. If anyone mentioned Marsha and Shayna, she would go into a fit of screaming hysterics. She was put away in a mental institution for months, then she seemed to lapse into a coma of sorts. She stopped eating, she just seemed to stop living for a long time. She’d be awake, but it was as if no one was home.
I used to see her every day once she was moved into the nursing home, then about two years ago, she seemed to move out of the half comatose, half catatonic state she’d lived in for the past few years. Kayla visited a lot more after she started coming around. Though Kayla and Shayna used to dress alike and never went out without the other, Serah never seemed to noticed Shayna’s absence. She even addressed Kayla correctly.
My phone rang, startling me from the memories that played through my mind. Absently I reached for it.
“Cheryl Adams speaking.”
A chocked sob broke the silence. I could hear faint noises in the background. I figured someone either dialed the wrong number or was playing a prank.
“Are you okay?” I spoke again, then I heard someone else take the phone.
“Cheryl, It’s Kayla. There is a new lead on the Madam Selma games. They have found others who suffered worse fates.”
“Kayla, I’ve been investigating these cases for the past ten years. I know that Serah believes they disappeared 137 days that fortune, but it wasn’t.”
“It was 137 days.. Wait.. you’re right. Well remember, we were stranded in Mexico for a extra week due to that hurricane. The fortune was told the day after we arrived, so it started two weeks later… my God! It started the day of that Dance Competition.”
“So what is the new lead you have?”
“Madam Selma was created after the main programmer’s Aunt. She is highly trained in the Voodoo ways, though they changed her skin tones. Also, the main programmer was fired after trying to program some weird stuff into the game.” Kayla spoke slowly. She worked for another place that also investigated Paranormal Activity.
“I knew about the Voodoo priestess. I didn’t know how closely related she was though.” This did shock me.
“She tried to stop the game’s progress after she was fired, but failed. As a last ditch effort, she tried to sabotage the game to where it couldn’t be released. The minor glitches in the game were just thought to be small errors. They still think it’s just errors, they don’t realize that people have died due to curses that thing puts on people. They say curses don’t exist.” Kayla said with disbelief in her voice.
“Well in my investigations, so far over three hundred people have died after one of that game’s little ‘glitches’. That game electrocuted seven people, three were severely injured but managed to survive. One died instantly.”
“There.. Proof the curse exists. Every time something happens with that machine, it has to do with the numbers one, three, and seven. Remember the dance team. One sponsor, three guys, seven girls. The bags from the Mexico trip. Shayna picked bags one, three and seven. The product code on the game begins with one three and seven. But here is the strangest thing. The first unit to come off the assembly line was crated at 1:37 on July 13th.”
I scanned a few files I had collected on Madam Selma’s Fortune. She was right. The first unit’s crating was widely publicized. All the information that Kayla was telling me was highly accurate. The numbers seemed to be some clue or something.
“Kayla is there any evidence that those numbers mean anything? There has to be something to tie it to any Voodoo curse.”
I heard a faint rustle of papers on the other end of the line. I could hear her muffled talking to herself then she spoke again.
“Not that I can find. She must have created the curse to fit this thing, that is all I can think of.”
Come to think of it, that could be true. Then it dawned on me, who was crying on the phone?
“Kayla, who was that crying?” I heard a shriek on her end, then a child’s laugh.
“My daughter. She was mad because I told her to it’s time for bed.” Instantly, the crying began again. “I mean it, GO TO BED! Sarah Leanne!”
“How old is she? I didn’t know you had kids.” It nearly didn’t dawn on me that Serah had a daughter shortly after graduation, just before Shayna and Marsha disappeared.. “She’s Serah’s. I adopted her because her family wanted nothing to do with her. Actually, my mom adopted her, but after she died, I gained custody. That was about three years after Serah went off the deep end. She was in the asylum for a month or so before she went catatonic on them and they couldn’t take care of the feeding tube. Plus they had wild patients that thought the tube was harming her and would try to pull it out.. Or put stuff down it. They transferred her to Rambling Oaks shortly after that.”
“Serah told me she had their remains…”I stopped short. “I saw something in that box she has, but I have no clue.”
“She has a statue, I don’t know what it is, but it was found with the bodies. My guess is somehow their real bodies are connected to it. I found out they got some samples of the bodies they recovered. The results of the tests were never released. The DNA found wasn’t human.”
