meetings

17 years later in a small village a boy was outside doing his chores when his life was changed forever. "Eshrenn get in here, we have some guests." His mother yelled from in the house, "And make sure you have your shirt on, would you? I don't want these two to run off like the last ones did."
"Ok mom, I'm coming, and I'll have my shirt on too. I just have to finish cutting the wood." And with that he split another piece of wood. When he finished his last two pieces of wood, he went over to the bucket of water he had sitting there for when he was done. After quickly getting a drink, he took the rest and poured it over his head. Shaking his head to get the water out of his eyes, he put his shrt on and walked into the house, rubbing his eyes to get the last of the water out. "Knock that off would you?" His little sister said, meeting him just inside the door. "You'll embarase mom in front of our guests, and I don't think she'd like that very much."
"Ah hush Chaisa. I'll be polite this time."
"You better be or mom will skin you alive."
"That's what worries me." Eshrenn said, walking into the living room. His mom was facing the direction that he had come from and perked up when she saw him. "Eshrenn, you finally made it. I want you to meet our guests Oreata and his sister Sakuya." The man turned around to face Eshrenn and gave a polite nod. Eshrenn returned the nod and Oreata faced his mother again, while his sister tuned around. Eshrenn could see that she was beautiful, but what really caught his attention was her eyes. He was captivated by the mischeif and merriness in them. When he returned to his senses, she had a knowing smile on her face, and Eshrenn felt himself starting to blush. Realizing that there was no way to get out of the introductions now, he regained control of himself and went to sit next to his mother.
"We're sorry about the intrusion ma'am but we were wondering if you could offer us a place to stay until we have our own house built." Oreata said.
"What property did you get?" Kyre asked.
"Believe it or not, it's the one right next to yours."
"Really? Well then, in that case, your welcome to stay here, and I'm sure Eshrenn and Enishi would be glad to help you build your house."
"The help would be very much appriciated." Sakuya said, her eyes filled with mischief again.
"I must warn you though, Eshrenn and Enishi are very mischevious." Kyre said with a smile. "But they're hard workers and most of the time polite." She added as Eshrenn looked innocently up at the celling.
"Do enlighten me more on this mischeif streak of theirs." Sakuya said, scooting forward a little in her chair.
"Well, I shouldn't be proud of them for it, but some of the stuff they've done is ingenius. But they never get anybody who doesn't deserve it."
"What do you mean?" Oreata asked, getting interested.
"Well one time, when they were about 5, they somehow made this goat bladder explode on this bully who always beat the kids really bad, but no one would tell on him because of how big he was. He tried to bully Eshrenn, but Eshrenn literally put his boot in the kid's mouth." Kyre said with a smile.
"Really?" Oreata asked with a thoughtful look on his face.
"How did they make the bladder explode?" Sakuya asked.
"They won't tell anybody." Kyre said.
"How did you guys make the bladder explode?" Sakuya asked him.
"Sorry, secret of the trade." Eshrenn said with a mildly evil smile. "Mom, as much as I would love to stay and chat, I have to finish my chores before it gets dark."
"Ok you go do that. We'll talk more when you come in." Kyre said. Eshrenn looked at Sakuya and her eyes said I'll get that secret out of you somehow. And with a bow to their guests, he went out to finish his chores.
. . . . . .
As he was finishing his chores, Eshrenn couldn't help thinking about Sakuya. He was so focused on her and his chores that he didn't see his younger brother Enishi walk up. "You know, when you think like that, it tends to get a little warmer out here." He said, taking off his shirt to emphasize the point.
"Ah shut up you horse's ass." Eshrenn said brandishing his hammer menacingly. "Why don't you grab a hammer out of the shed and help me put the rest of these posts in."
"Gotcha'"Enishi said with a smile. As he ran to the shed, Eshrenn couldn't help but notice the sun shining on his golden-brown hair, which was so very different from his own jet black hair. That and Enishi' green eyes and Eshrenn's blue ones, where the only thing that gave anybody the idea that they had different fathers. Eshrenn never knew his, but Enishi' father was a member of the royal guard when the castle was attacked, and he died fighting. Eshrenn had always thought that was how his own father had died, fighting valiantly against a score of men. He quickly shook the thought out of his head when he saw Enishi run back with a hammer. "Lets get this done quickly so we can have some fun before it gets dark, ok bro?" Enishi asked with a mischevious smile.
"Lets do it then." Eshrenn said getting the same smile on his face as they started to hammer the fence posts in place.
About an hour later, just as they were getting done, Chaisa and Sakuya had come out with something to drink for them. When she saw that neither of them had a shirt on, Sakuya went a little red, and Chaisa started to scold them. "You knew that we had guests, so why did you take off your shirts?"
"Aw come on Chaisa, did you really expect me to leave my shirt on while working in the sun?" Eshrenn asked.
"As a matter of fact I did." Chaisa said scornfuly as Enishi started to laugh.
"Just because we can work with our shirts off and you can't isn't really a fair reason for torturing us Chaisa." Enishi said after taking a drink of water, causing Eshrenn to laugh and Sakuya to smile. Even Chaisa smirked a little.
"Whatever. Enishi, mom wants you inside so she can talk to you." Chaisa said with an evil smile that caused Enishi to wince.
"What'd I do this time?" He moaned, walking up the hill towards the house.
"Interesting family that you've got." Sakuya said after a couple minutes of silence.
"Yeah, they can be funny sometimes." He said, pulling his shirt over his head. He winced a little when the fabric dragged over the scar across his back.
"How'd you get that?" Sakuya asked with a hint of awe in her voice.
"I got attacked by an especially mean wraith a year ago." He said, remembering the encounter.
" How'd it happen?" Sakuya asked, walking over to him and draging her finger lightly across the scar. At her touch, Eshrenn could feel his hair raise.
" I was making a trip over to the next village, and I was on my way back when it came up behind me and slashed my back with it's claws. Luckly I had my dad's sword, and when it came at me again, I attacked it. I thought that I had scared it away until I heard the most beautiful singing ever."
"Singing scared it away?" Sakuya asked, puzzled.
"Yeah, I looked around for the person who was singing, and it was coming from a clearing, so I followed the voice. When I got to the clearin there was no humans there but the phoenix itself."
"You saw the phoenix?" Sakuya asked with awe in her voice again.
"Yeah it just stood there looking at me and then it took off. It was amazing." As Sakuya took her hand away, Eshrenn pulled his shirt the rest of the way down. As they walked back up to the house, Sakuya said, "They say that the phoenix only shows itself to those whose destiny is ordained by the gods, and that the phoenix is a source of inspiration and protection for them."
"That's an old wives tale. How many bards or healers have ever seen the phoenix? I was probably just in the right place at the right time." And with that they droped the subject.
