I Am
If I could stop what was happening, I would, but I couldn’t. One blink. Two blinks. Three quick blinks to stop what would happen if the stinging in my eyes continued its course. The bile was rising. I had to swallow it down, burning my throat with its acidic taste. I closed my eyes for a moment, wanting to get out of this room, wanting privacy to cry to myself. The clanking of chains brought my attention again to what was across from me.
When Yurius had become king, the first few days were happiness for him. He could do whatever he wanted to do and no one told him otherwise. Only, that happiness didn’t last. Reality of his situation crashed upon him all too quickly. The endless troubles of the people, of his kingdom plagued him. He couldn’t sleep for many nights. My life was sworn to his protection, but I could not protect him from the blackness that entered his heart. So, I watched helplessly as the heart of my King could no longer feel.
He had told me what he would do. I objected, and he punished me for questioning him. With my blood running down my back from gashes, I looked up at him to see him smiling in a most heart chilling way. He kneeled down towards me, grabbing my face in hand to whisper, “You will watch, and you will get used to it.” I passed out after that. When I awoke I was held in place against the far wall from Yurius’ bed. I was hidden in shadows, with see-through fabric draped in front of me so I could still see across.
He was tied up at the end of the bed, one arm to each post. The moonlight that spilled from the window on his right shone of his pale, flawless skin, revealing every inch of his beauty to me.
And to the man in front of him.
I wanted to speak. I wanted that man to get away from my King and not dirty him. The gag, the distance, the screams, and the moans prevented my whimpers from being heard. This overbearing pain entered my heart as my body went cold.
After, the man had let the worn out King go, resting him in his bed, so even if someone came through the doors, they would see nothing was amiss. All through the night, until morning I was pinned like that, not sleeping at all. When Yurius let me go in the morning, he smiled at my anguish. I hated him at the moment, and still I deeply loved him.
That was first night. That was many years ago. When darkness fell, I protected my own heart by feeling nothing myself. My King trusted me enough after a year of restraint.
It was I who watched over him when he slept. It was I who washed the filth from his body. It was I who was the tragedy. I knew he did it to so he could sleep without dreams, and I knew he wouldn’t ask me because I would never do it myself.
I watched the sheet rise and fall in tune with his breathing, short black locks spread around him like a black halo, and his ice blue eyes closed in peace. Yurius. I placed my face near his own, strands of long, silver hair falling over him. One kiss. One of the softest kisses on his lips, whispering to him, “I am the only one who truly loves you.”
