Why Not Me?
I watch her from the shadows
I cry with only a whisper to dry my tears
I wish to follow her and guard her graceful steps
Her silken kimono rustling in the damp night air
I know I can’t ever have her
I see her laugh as he slides his haori* over her slender shoulders
I smile as I fall into darkness without ever reaching the light
Each day brings new pain
Each smile she tosses carelessly to men passing by
But never to me, even as I worship at her dainty feet
But still, I love her, cherish her
It’s not her fault, fate made her so
It’s her job to please
But not her job to please me
I must watch and die a little
Every time my Love walks out the door
Each time the flint strikes
Each time she leaves to embrace another
I weep and wish I was beautiful
I know that would not help
But I wish anyway
How I long to tell her
But she wouldn’t believe me
And if she did….
I’d be made to leave, be tossed out in the streets
Like unwanted rubbish, like dirty ashes
Because I love a Geisha
And I’m the one person who shouldn’t.
