Chapter 2
Ray focused his attention on his cousin again.
“So tell us mate, who is it?” he asked and patted Zach on the back.
The other one ginned and asked sheepishly, “But you wouldn’t know her anyway. Of what use can it be to you to know?”
“I could sell the information,” Ray said with a serious face and grinned. The others burst out laughing. Ten minutes later, everyone abruptly stopped talking about Zach and his new girl when his Dad came over. Zach threw a quick thankful look around and then turned towards their coach.
Some time later on their way to the car, Ray asked Zach about the plans for the night. Zach nodded eagerly when he found out that Brian had invited Ray along. They drove to Zach’s home together and went to town in the evening. On the way, they met some of the others. The rest were already waiting in front of their favourite pub.
It was easy to tell the waitress knew the team since she arranged a table in their favourite alcove and gave them first priority over the other guests. Ray sat between his cousin to the right and Brian to the left.
After they had ordered their drinks, Ray started talking to the blond next to him. He discovered that most schools with football teams kept the training going during summer holidays. This was something that Ray could have only dreamt. Football had no meaning in his family. Ray did not tell Brian why he had had to quit. He did not feel ashamed of the fact that his Dad claimed to have no money for things like that but there was a certain anger that had been building since his last official training session. He had always been keeping it concealed by external indifference. Seeing Ray’s sinister glaring green eyes, Brian carefully changed the subject as soon as he got to close to that taboo topic.
And so the evening went on and soon became a night. Jack and Dave, the two who had scored the other goals were soon in a state of total oblivion and entertained the group with dirty and mostly pointless jokes, gesticulating wildly. Ray noticed that Brian was the only one of them who stayed entirely sober.
At about midnight Zach suddenly said, “Hey guys, listen! My cousin Ray here...” He pointed at Ray, poking his finger into Ray’s temple, “he will join our training on Monday!”
All of them cheered in excitement, even though scarcely half of them actually got the gist of what Zach had said.
“And since that makes the team seventeen and it’s not fair to go eight against nine he’ll take turns with Brian and me.”
Zach looked at Brian.
“You okay with that? Brian?”
“Sure,” Brian nodded.
Ray had no time to say no and exchanged a grin with Brian.
After a while, the alcohol started to work its influence on deeper parts of their bodies and the first wave of them went to the toilets downstairs. From that moment on, there was someone leaving the table at least every fifteen minutes.
Ray had not drunk too much and that was somewhat unusual for him. There were times like these when you first found out what the others thought about getting drunk before you made a fool out of yourself. It would not have been a good start if he were not to remember anything that happened tonight. When he got up to leave the table for some minutes, he only swayed slightly.
Washing his hands, he was alone in the lavatory. Just as he moved to leave, the door opened and Brian entered, walked over to the sinks and turned on the water. For a split second, Ray was captivated by the sight of the clear liquid running over the almost too white skin of Brian’s wrist. Moving to dry his hands, the blond did not return Ray’s smile but looked at him, deep in thought as though he was examining a painting he did not quite get the meaning of what was on display.
Ray frowned. “What’s wrong? Uhm… did you only come here to wash your hands?” he tried to joke.
Brian shook his head, dried his hands and began to speak. His voice was almost inaudible but strong and determined.
“I came here to ask you something. You mind me being direct?”
There was that weird feeling down Ray’s stomach but he tried to ignore it and kept his smile. Why was the other one’s voice so very gingerly, even timid?
“Sure, what is it?”
Brian came a little closer so he could keep his voice low. “How… do you feel about boys?”
The blow came out of nowhere. Why did he immediately understand what Brian was trying to ask? Ray did not know and he did not want to think about it either. He was a little puzzled that this scene was scaring him so much.
“What do you mean?” he laughed in a failed attempt to raise a little hope that this conversation was not taking a turn down to the swampland where he could not walk any more.
“What I said…”
And he knew what took the solid ground from under his feet, back then.
“Are you… more into girls or… boys?” Brian was on the verge of regretting asking.
“You’re trying to say I’m gay?” Ray’s voice was harsher than he had intended. The question did not just scratch the surface of that long suppressed memory but fairly dug a hole into it.
“Not necessarily”
“What is that supposed to mean again?”
“You could be… bisexual”, Brian tried to manoeuvre this onto safer ground since he was sure he had gone too far. He should have been patient. He had not even known that boy for half a fucking day!
“So you ARE accusing me of being gay!”
Brian looked a little hurt. “You think that’s an accusation?”
“No shit. Certainly not, but.…” He moved a little closer to Brian. “But you’re wrong, I’m not.”
Ray was calming down a bit. However, he still hated this conversation. What had he done to give Brian the idea that HE was…
“You stared at my legs,” Brian interrupted him.
“Huh?”
“In front of the gym”
“It must have been a coincidence. By the way, you stared at my legs” Brian smiled and blushed faintly.
“Well… But you sometimes looked at me like that...”
Brian had no chance to finish his sentence. He suddenly found himself pinned against the wall, staring into Ray’s furious eyes.
“I AM NOT GAY!” Ray hissed angrily.
Brian did not listen. For a second he was captivated by the deep green eyes burning with … Wait! Was that panic? His gaze wandered lower over his opponent’s trembling lips and with a flutter up to his eyes again.
“Then why do you overreact like this?”
Now it was Ray who had not listened. The panic in his eyes changed to fear and then confusion when he let go of Brian a second later.
“S-sorry… I sometimes get a little…” He trailed off and searching for the right words stared at the dirty floor.
“Is everything alright?” Brian asked tentatively.
“Yeah…sure…I should ask you that.”
“I’m fine, man. I’m sorry. I think I provoked you”
“Nah, never mind, let’s simply forget about it. Okay?”
Ray fished out his favourite What-Did-You-Just-Say-Grin and Brian nodded. The awkwardness of what just happened lingered in his mind a little longer. He was very good at concealing this though. Of course, he could not immediately ban it from his mind. He should stop staring at other people, that only got him into trouble too quickly, Ray concluded.
For the rest of the night they had a lot of fun. At least Ray was indeed able to focus on something else until he went to bed. He dreamed about Brian that night but all he knew about the dream when he woke up was a strange feeling in his stomach.
