Chapter 2

"...You're really going to keep me...?" Novus asked, genuinely wondering. It had been sort of like this with many others....they always acted like they loved him and wanted to keep him, when in reality, they were only imagining him to be someone else when they screwed him. They'd get bored in a couple of weeks, and cast him to the side. Novus's self-esteem was almost at rock-bottom low because of this.

"Yes I am. I thought it was what you wanted. To be away from your family" Blaine says as he closes the curtains. He turns around and faces him, and can immediately tell where Novus's mind was. "You believe I'm like other vampires." He sighs and grabs a blood red silk robe and wraps it around himself. He kept his face lowered to the ground as he spoke, "Give me a week, and I'll give you a lifetime..." He walks to the door, almost rushing to get to his coffin.

Novus watched him go, his blue eyes revealing a few different emotions at once. But it only took him 5 minutes to fall asleep, he was so exhausted. Even though he was supposed to be a nocturnal creature, he enjoyed the day too much to sleep through it.
A couple hours before nightfall later that day Novus woke. He glanced at a clock on the wall, then rubbed at his eyes. He pushed himself to a sitting position and winced. A little sore...but nothing bad enough to keep him from getting up and exploring. He got out of bed and took his time as he walked to the other side of the room to search for a robe like Blaine's he could wear. It didn't take long to find one, and even though it was big on him, he put it on anyway.
Novus peeked his head out of the door, glancing about at his surroundings before heading out into the hall. He set out exploring the mansion, but finding some food was really his goal. He still required human food, and tried to find a kitchen.

Blaine smelled Novus's scent in his deep sleep and awoke. He climbed out of his coffin, got dressed in all black (a favorite color for him), and looked around. He climbed up to the cellar, just above the basment, and grabed some dried food for Novus and a few bottles of wine. He glanced around to see if he could bring anything else, staisfied his curiosity and climbed up to the main building, smelling Novus out. It didn't take long to find him, seeming a little lost but confident. He smiled and caught up with him, making no noise as he walked. "Kitchen's this way, little one," he said smiling brightly.

Novus jumped at the sudden sound of Blaine's voice and whipped his attention around to meet it. "...Oh...well, thank you..." he said, regaining his composure and tried to pretend he wasn't so jumpy. "You're awake a little early, aren't you...?"

Blaine chuckled lightly and looked around, seeing pale pinks and purples on some walls. "Hmm... Maybe, but not enough to do much to me. Besides..." He stopped and looked around again, seemingly guilty. "Nevermind. You wanted the kitchen right? I had a feeling that you were hungry, so I brought this up for you." He told Novus as he slowly started to walk in the opposite direction Novus had been going.

Novus smiled. "Well thank you," he said, but was curious as to what Blaine had been about to say. "What did you bring??" he asked, walking at Blaine's side and looking up at him. The pheromones practically oozed out of every pore in Novus's skin, but he didn't seem aware of it. It was a common trait in incubi and succubi.

Blaine looked down at his armful of food. He handed the wine off to Novus. "Uh.. chardonnay, riesling and... merlot I believe. I've got some dired fruits here. For when I entertain my non-blood drinking visitors... Not much else. Some bread... I'm sorry if none of this is to your liking, little one, but it's the best I can do, unless you'd like to become vampire." He mumbled to himself, but let himself be clearly heard, "Like it'd be possible anyway..." He gently sniffed the air, almost instinctively, and gently shuddered. "Your pheremones are very strong by the way."

"Oh no, it's all very fine for me, thank you. Bread is fine," Novus reassured. It was a bit better than what he would have gotten back at his old home. He blinked at the mentioning of a possible Turning....all he had ever heard on the subject were contradictory rumors. When it came to turning incubi, he had heard different things, like some became even more powerful and seductive then their masters, and others suffered the transition horribly or didn't survive at all. Depending on the species of incubi, Novus supposed.
..."Huh?" Novus asked, looking back up at Blaine. He hadn't heard him, he'd been so deep in thought.

"Huh?" Blaine replied as well. "Oh, your pheremones are strong. I would have thought, since you're still very young, that your pheremones wouldn't have been so strong. But, I could be mistaken." He lead them into the kitchen and set the food down on a table.

"Oh...really??" Novus said, suddenly appearing as if a lightbulb had turned on over his head. So that's why so many people hit on him all the time. "I guess I can't help it. Everyone wants me..." he said, sighing overdramatically. But in truth, he didn't find it funny at all. He sat down at the table, and began selecting a few pieces of dried fruit to nibble at. Then his blue eyes studied Blaine.
"Blaine...do I please you?" he asked, blinking his long blonde lashes.

Blaine looked at him surprised. "Uh.. I thought that was clear last night.... Of course you please me, little one. Why? What's on your mind?" Blaine studied him for a minute. Why was Novus asking him this? Wasn't it obvious? He guessed not, as since Novus had to ask him. He waited for Novus's reply.

"Well you see, I still don't know you that well, and many before you have acted pretty similar at first..." Novus told Blaine, taking a sip of the merlot. "Maybe I'm just a little too insecure...I don't know," he said, shaking his head and pretending to be interested in what kind of wood the table was made out of.

It was a cherry wood table, characterized by a deep red color. Blaine looked, around feeling hungry again. "No, little one, you have every right to feel that way. That's why I ask you to give me a week. If you still don't like it, then I'll set you free to do as you wish. However, while you are here, you can do anything you want, so long as it's not going down into the basement while I'm sleeping. I also ask that you don't travel outside, away from the house, while I cannot be with you to guard you. I'm sure you feel like a little child as I tell you these things but... I just don't want the same thing happening again..." He apparently just let something slip and blushes slightly. He turns away and pretends to be interested in a blood stain on his counter.

"I understand," Novus said as he looked up at Blaine, his blue eyes like ice for a split second. But the coldness was gone so quick as to make one doubt it was ever even there to begin with.
"Same thing happening? What do you mean?" Novus inquired, curious. Something to do with himself? No, most likely someone else, a past lover Blaine had had.
Novus continued to nibble at the food Blaine had provided him.

Blaine sighs deeply. "I can't keep it from you forever...." He looks around for a possible distraction, but finds none. "... It was over half a century ago... I met a young woman. Just a little older than you are now. She was... Words can barely describe her. She challenged spring in it's beauty... She decided to stay with me. I never forced myself upon her like I did when I first met you. I couldn't bring myself to do it. Neither could any other vampire I knew. They were all tamed by her beauty. The others envied me because I got to keep her. They took the opportunity one day when she went out to the garden she kept. She stayed out for a little too long, and it was just after sunset. ..." He paused, obviously trying to find the will to go on. The memory was a very painful one for him.

Novus leaned forward, causing the too-big robe he wore to slip a little off one of his shoulders. He rested his head on his hands as he listened to Blaine talk. He knew he probably shouldn't ask, but his curiousity always got the better of him. "...and then what...?" he asked, a faint look of approaching horror and sympathy for Blaine creeping onto his girlish face. He could guess a few outcomes, but he wanted Blaine to finish the story himself.

Blaine looked up and out of a window in the opposite hall. There was a full moon rising and it was spilling its light across the floor, reaching everywhere it could. "I woke up.. not too long after sunset. I walked out and couldn't find her. I went out trying to find a scent trail. I picked it up and reached a spot where something shouldn't have happened... Her scent went off in six different directions. Mingled with her scent was the smell of blood." He stopped and regained his composure once again. A few seconds later, turned away from Novus, he continued. "She had been separated... into six... different pieces...."

Novus sat for a long time, first staring at Blaine without meaning to, then he glanced to the side. That must have been utterly horrible....he could barely imagine. Minutes crawled by in silence. Then finally Novus got up and approached Blaine. He bent down and kissed his cheek. "I'm sorry..." he said, running a hand over Blaine's hair.
Blaine inhaled sharply and shook himself gently to regain his composure. He faced Novus, a faint sign of pain on his face at the memory. "It's alright little one. What's done is done and nothing can change it now. I only ask that you obey my wishes, as they are few.... And that you eat, and drink to stay healthy. And also that you don't hesitate to ask me when you need something." He smiles at Novus softly.

Novus nodded, then smiled at Blaine. "I will obey your wishes," Novus told Blaine. "But if I'm not allowed to go out without you, then I have a special favor to ask. I do need human food yes, but I also need to eat souls to keep myself alive," Novus said, but Blaine probably already knew that. "You'll need to take me hunting with you, or bring victims back here, to me," he said, eyes downcast. Utterly horrible, eating souls. Maybe worse than just eating blood, like vampires do....because when you eat someone's soul, they don't get any more chances to reincarnate. That soul dissappears forever.

Blaine laughs lightly. "Finally, an end to my question: Does the body disappear with the soul, or does the body remain intact?" He felt it was stupid question, but a long since gone friend and he had gotten into a drunken brawl over the same question. Blaine remained firm that the body was left behind, the friend insisted that the body left with the soul. "Another one for you, where does the soul lie in the human body?" Another question: another brawl.

At first Novus looked slightly disturbed at the first question, because, even after a couple of years, he still hadn't gotten used to what he had to do to live. But he calmed a little and managed to smile. "The body does remain. That complicates things very much," Novus said with a sigh. Then all the sudden, he looked very thoughtful, and then smiled a little, dreamy smile. "Where's the soul...? Just a few inches under the surface..."Novus told Blaine, still looking a bit dreamy. "Can't you see others's souls, in their eyes? I can..." Novus said, sitting lightly upon Blaine's lap. "And I can taste them, just this easily..."he told Blaine, leaning forward and slipping his tongue into Blaine's mouth. He kissed him deeply, licking at Blaine's soul.

Blaine smiled into the kiss. He finally figured out two mysteries. And a third: Why Novus licking at his soul was so erotic. He'd forgotten it, if there was even much left. It was probably black by now, or tainted so much that he'd forgotten what it was like to be human. Now that Novus was here, he could finally relax and drop the monster that Novus seemed to calm enough so Blaine wouldn't go around killing everything in sight. He dropped his resistances and kissed Novus back.

After a minute or two, Novus pulled away. "....and you know, every soul tastes differently...."he confided, tilting his head and smiling. "Yours....the taste mostly resembles...lemon cake," Novus said, then laughed, thinking it was very funny....but quite delightful at the same time.

"Lemon cake?" Blaine laughed too trying to remember the taste of a lemon cake. He had no idea how each sould could taste differently or why they had such peculiar tastes, but who was he to judge? "You know, every different person's blood has a distinct taste as well."

"Huh? Really?" Novus inquired, tilting his head as his blue eyes studied Blaine's face. "I'll bet none taste like lemon cake....hey aren't you hungry?? You should go out and eat," Novus suggested, lightly touching Blaine's cheek with his fingers. "It would warm you."

Blaine chuckles gently. "Maybe. I'm forming an idea right now. I'll let you in on it when I've worked out the kinks, little one." Smiles warmly at him. "But to further my point on blood.... You're right, none taste like lemon cake. However... Some blood tastes more metallic than others. It has to do with the iron intake. Some blood is more sweet than others... Some more metallic.... Yours... Is a little hard to tell. I can taste the iron in your blood stream... but there's something different.. something exotic in your blood that keeps me..." He nips gently at Novus's neck "Coming back for more..."

Shivers traveled down Novus's spine. "It's because....I'm not human," Novus said, closing his eyes. "Blaine...you took a lot from me yesterday. I can't sustain you everyday. You need to go out and eat. You can have a little from me when you return," Novus told him, pushing him away. "I'll be here," Novus lightly kissed Blaine on the lips, then got off of his lap. "Hurry back," he said, a smile flitting across his not yet mature face.

Blaine got up, suddenly, and gently grabbed Novus by the back of his head. He swooped down and, at the last second, planted a deep kiss on Novus's lips. He lingered for a few seconds then slowly pulled away. His eyes were deep and dark with desire and blood-lust. Still mere inches from his face, Blaine said in a deep husky voice, "I'll bring something back for you.... Do you want anything in particular, or just whatever I happen to bring home?"

Novus's eyes were wide with newfound terror. The shaky foundation of trust he'd been standing on was being undermined. "...oh, well...." he began, recollecting his wits from being startled. "Maybe a girl around my age...they're easier to handle. It'd be best if you drank her first, but keep her concious..." Novus said, body trembling a little as he averted his eyes from Blaine's lustrous stare. He pulled the robe back up over his exposed shoulder, for it had slipped down earlier.

"Hey..." Blaine reached out softly with his hand and cupped Novus's face. He gently kissed his cheek. He looked Novus in the eye with a soft expression. "Once you come to understand that you, like me, need to feed however inhumane it may be, you'll be less afraid and less uncomfortable with it. We're just like humans. The only difference is this: we need them like they need animals to live." He offered a soft smile.

Novus looked at Blaine, most of his fear flitting away. "Yeah, maybe I'll get used to it...someday..." Novus said, but those black, inky tears were welling up in his eyes as a few different emotions raged inside him at once, combined with stress buildup over the past few years.

Blaine gently wiped a finger under one of Novus's eyes. "It's alright. ... I wouldn't tell you something like this unless I had been through it all before." He sighs thinking far back. "I remember being in your situation once. Not with my family but with my sire..." He smiles softly, yet painfully. "I know that it's hell trying to go on, little one. But don't give in just yet. Turn to me. I'll help you and keep you safe."

Novus actually smiled at this, the smile was full of sort of....relief and hope. He placed his hand on Blaine's, his other hand wiping at his black tears. "....if, you don't mind me asking....Blaine, how old are you?" Novus inquired, a curious look taking over his facial expression.

Blaine laughed. "Old. Very old." He laughs again. Still smiling, he replies, "926 years old, little one." He really had no idea how old he truly was until he said it. Suddenly he swore he could feel his bones ache with the age he had just reported. Any senority he had seemed to be diminished by the fact that he was so old. The thoughts seemed to reflect on his face, as since his facial expression dimmed over.

Novus now regarded Blaine with awe. "Wow..." he said, blinking. "I'm almost 16.... I wonder how long I'll live. I met some others of my kind once, that said they were over 200 years old," he commented, looking thoughtful. Then he studied Blaine's face, then his eyes. His gaze seemed penetrating, as if he was scanning the soul itself...which is probably exactly what he was doing. "Are you alright? You probably should be going out soon to eat."

Blaine blinked and physically shook himself. He started to feel like his old self again now that he had shaken his body a little. "I will, little one. And I will find you a girl like you want. I'll bring her back here so I don't have to worry about on-lookers." As an afterthought he added, "But I won't harm her until I get here, alright?" He was genuinely concerned for Novus's well-being. The feeling hit him like a brick and continued to flutter around in his mind. ~What am I becoming? This isn't like me...~ He turned away from Novus, still trying his hardest to fake his thoughts. He grabbed his coat and slid into it before turning back to Novus, the thoughts finally pushed from his mind.

Novus tilted his head, but didn't ask any more questions. He stood where he was, not approaching Blaine to give a good-bye hug or kiss. He did not want to risk exciting Blaine's blood lust again. "Alright. Good-bye...I'll be waiting here for you," Novus said, offering Blaine a small, but slightly shy smile.
Just then, a clear and slightly loud mental message shot through the city, sent by a vampire for other vampire ears only. ~The Prince has arrived. All Hail, our Prince has arrived...~
