chapter 1
Maria soon found herself in her bedroom on the 2nd floor. It was exactly how it had been the summer before, the summer before that, and the summer before that, for the past decade. Pink wallpaper, a pink dresser, a pink rug, and a Dumbo poster on her white closet door. She walked across the room, and sat her heavy suitcase on her pink bedspread. She then decided it was time for her to go back downstairs and see if she could help with dinner.
When she entered the kitchen, she saw Grandpa washing his hands at the sink. "Grandpa!" He spun around.
"Maria!" They hugged and kissed, and he stepped back. "Wow, you seem to have grown a foot!"
"I don't think I have since last summer, Grandpa. I'm too old." He shrugged, and reached up to the top shelf and pulled down four plates.
"I sent Sara to get KFC so we wouldn't have to cook dinner tonight." Grandma rounded the corner with a pack of napkins.
"And she should be back at any moment. We sent her awhile ago. She'll be eating with us. Maria sighed and thought, "Why is everyone so hung up on Sara?" Grandma seemed to read her thoughts.
"Sara is like a second granddaughter. She'll be pleased you meet you. She was very happy to learn that you'd be coming. Aside from her baby sister, Sara is the only person for about two miles under twenty..." She seemed to want to say more, but everyone heard the front door open and slam shut.
"Dinner's here!" Maria watched from the kitchen door as her grandma rushed to the hallway to help with the bags. The first thing Maria noticed about Sara was her beauty. She had blond hair, which she tied back in a ponytail, and a perfect smile. Maria stepped away from the door to help Grandpa set the table. Grandma prepared the silverware while Maria and Sara met. Sara held out her hand, which Maria shook.
"I'm Sara Thompson. And you?"
"Maria Lewis." Grandma pulled out her chair, which was everyone else's cue to be seated as well. They bowed their heads for a quick prayer, then dug in.
After dinner, Grandma suggested Marie take Sara upstairs and show her her room. Upon seeing it, Sara silently giggled. "Lynn's memory is going. I've seen this room many times. I always thought it was a little girl's room."
"It once was. Since I was six. I'm only here for the summer, why change it?"
Sara had walked to the other side of the room, and was giving it a good look over. "I heard you weren't supposed to have pink walls. It causes irritation over time."
"That's red."
"Whatever. Hey! Can I have this?" Sara bent down, and when she stood up, Maria saw she was holding a stuffed animal. Todd, from Fox and the Hound.
"I guess so."
"Thanks!" She sat it on top of the suitcase on the bed, and fell back next to the suitcase, looking at the ceiling. Maria took a seat next to her. "So, Maria, how old are you?"
"I turn seventeen next month."
"Hah. I'll be eighteen in December. I just moved here in January. How long you staying?"
"Until September."
"Good! I need someone my own age around." She tapped Maria's knee, and placed both hands on her stomach. "Are you glad school finally let out?"
"Of course! Who wouldn't be?"
"Well, I'm sure I'm more glad than you."
Maria laid down on her side, facing Sara. "Why do you say that?"
"School is hell."
"Bullies?"
"Constant bullying."
"You're very pretty, what could they possibly be bullying you about?" Sara was silent for a moment.
"Just stupid stuff. Damn homophobes." Maria's eyes widdened.
"You're gay?"
Sara sat up, grabbed the stuff animal, and nodded. "Yes, I am. Does that bother you?" Maria sat up, and put her hands in her lap.
"Of course not. I'm no bigot."
Sara stood up, and made towards the door. "I have to babysit tonight. I'm here almost everyday, I'm sure your grandparents must be sick of me. See you tomorrow?"
"Sure." Sara waved, and left the room, closing the door behind her.
