Chapter Two

\"Is it an AIDs is scary type of thing?\" Nash asked Oliver the next morning as they were sitting down to waffles.

\"What?\"

\"Why you\'re scared of sex.\"

\"I\'m not scared of sex.\"

\"Then why did we spend ten minutes ignoring all the gay men in the bar last night before going home? It\'s not just a confidence thing.\"

\"I\'m not like you, I can\'t just jump into it.\"

\"You\'re twenty-one and have you even kissed a guy? Did you ever even try to get into your roommate\'s pants? This is where you\'re missing the appeal of wines and spirits, you know.\"

\"What? You think I should have gotten Wightman drunk?\"

\"Yeesh, not him, the other one- Sandborn, your Harvard roomie. And I was speaking of Scotch courage, not taking advantage of an unsuspecting med-student.\"

\"He\'s got a girlfriend.\"

\"I was dating Christy Merton when Jimmy and I-\"

\"No more about Jimmy Freedman. He\'s officially a banned topic. I\'m starting to regret coming out to you at all.\"

\"Don\'t be such a crank- I\'m just lending you the benefit of my vastly greater experience on all things gay. You should be thanking me.\"

\"I\'m going back to bed now.\"

\"Not gonna find any guys there- that\'s for sure.\"

\"So Ollie, I\'ve been thinking about your problem.\" They were doing laundry- folding whites. Nash wouldn\'t separate colors if Oliver didn\'t watch him like a hawk.

\"And by my problem, you mean?\"

\"Virginity,\" Nash answered and threw a pair of Oliver\'s boxers at him.

\"Oh. Nash, I\'ve decided not to try anymore.\"

\"Not to try?\"

\"Not to try and push things- I mean I have a good life. I\'m gonna be a doctor and I have you, half this house. Sex isn\'t that big a deal, right?\"

\"Ollie, you\'re a little young to be disillusioned yet. You don\'t have to be a wunderkind at everything.\"

\"Nash, if I were a wunderkind at sex, I\'d have been turning tricks at twelve.\"

\"That is because we only stayed for one drink and you didn\'t even make eye contact with anybody but me, let alone talk to anyone.\"

\"That\'s it, isn\'t it? You don\'t think anyone would want you. God damn! Ollie, do you have any idea why it was so easy to get girls who\'d never even met you to agree to go out with you, just on my say so?\'

\"Because you\'re charming and persuasive.\"

\"No- you think I\'m charming? Wait- don\'t answer that. I didn\'t have to do much persuading to get girls to go for you- I just pulled out your picture, mentioned where you were at school and told the iguana story. They melted like butter.\"

\"God, no! You\'ve been telling girls the iguana story to get them to go out with me all these years!\"

\"I told you- cute and cuddly. Ollie, you\'re a catch- you just need to believe it.\"

\"Really?\"

\"Yes.\"

\"Really, really?\"

\"Yeah.\"

\"Real-\"

\"Enough, Ollie.\"

\"Sorry- that\'s kinda hard to accept.\"

\"See that\'d just a confidence thing- you need confidence.\"

\"Easier said.\"

\"Yeah, I know, which is why I think doing is the next step here.\"

\"Would that I had someone to do.\"

\"I figure you just need to get the first guy out of the way- break the ice- then you\'ll be able to know that you\'re gonna be okay in this.\"

\"Still need that first guy.\"

\"No, you don\'t.\"

\"Uh- pretty sure I do. I\'m already just fine at alone, really.\"

\"No, what I mean is that you already have the first guy.\"

\"What? Who?\"

\"I- I\'ve been thinking about all this and I think I could do it. I could be more than just your wingman. I had this girlfriend- Penny- you remember Penny. She was a little- you know- kinky. I could do this- we could do this, Ollie.\"

\"You\'re crazy.\"

\"And that way your first time would be someone you know wouldn\'t hurt you, wouldn\'t use you. I think I still have some lube around.\"

\"Nash, you\'re straight.\"

\"But I know what I\'m doing. I- I really liked it with Penny. I mean, it wasn\'t better than- you know- than straight stuff, but it wasn\'t worse. It was just different- good different. I- we\'d be good at this, Ollie.\"

\"Yeah, well if it was about sex and not about you rescuing me from the world again, you\'d have thought about positions- you\'d be fantasizing about what we\'d do to each other- you\'d have stuck your fingers up your ass to see if you even liked the idea.\"

\"Gay men don\'t blush at that idea, Nash- they get hard. You look like you\'re going to faint, so let\'s just drop the whole thing.\"

\"Nash, I\'m sorry. I shouldn\'t have said all that- you just want to help because you have this stupid idea that you have to fix all my problems and you can\'t stop yourself from trying. Mostly I love that about you, but not today.\"

\"Me, too. So, lets just make this another banned subject, okay.\"
