Damn You

Aleca finally felt the room stop spinning and her voice came back to her. “Where has he been?” She directed the question to Jonathan and he answered back with a tone of amusement in his voice.

“Ask him yourself Aleca. No need to be shy. Look I know last time you must have met him he was an agent and you were a recruit but now you are a agent as well and you should treat him as your equal.”

Aleca turned to Ryan again and studied his composure. He was still looking at her as if waiting for her to address him. She went to say something but her voice escaped her again. Finally Ryan was able to speak. “Well I’ve been in Berlin... Jonathan... well he sent me 6 years ago to track Michael Vovlovic. I found him, got him, brought him back....”

Aleca let him see she was impressed a little but it was only a glimmer before she caught herself and let her face turn cold again. ~She’d be a great poker player~ Ryan told himself with a small smile. She turned back to Jonathan and after a deep breath she spoke. “Well? Is that all?”

Jonathan got a little confused by her attitude. “Well... I have something for the two of you to do soon, as long as my information is correct. Think of it as a way to get to know each other....”

“Jonathan I said no partners....”

“Aleca no questions about it you can handle yourself but its about fucking time we have someone who is as great as you are in my division and he is going to be working with you more often than not.”

“Fuck Jonathan!”

Jonathan shot Aleca one of his signature ‘Damn it Aleca don’t snap at me in front of people!’ looks. “Aleca, show Ryan your office. I’ll come by later to see how everything is going.” He looked back down at his papers, letting both Aleca and Ryan know they were dismissed. Aleca quickly left Jonathan’s office, not even looking at Ryan. Ryan quickly followed her, remaining silent until reaching the office. She quickly got to her desk, grabbed a picture frame, and slid it into a drawer and closed it.

~A husband?~ he wondered. She was still standing there, hand on the handle of her drawer, starring at the wall directly behind her desk. Finally she turned and looked at Ryan, tears seemed to be building her eyes.

“Hi...,” he said to her quietly. He watched her breathe deeply, holding in her tears. Aleca wanted to slap him. She wanted to rip his perfect teeth out of his perfect mouth and stomp on his perfect brown eyes. She wanted to leave bruises on his perfect body. His perfect skin. Rip out his perfect brown hair. He looked the same- rugged, tan, athletic- exactly the same.

“Ex... excuse me I need to go train....” she mumbled, leaving the room.

Ryan took a deep breath and looked around the office. The agent in him swiftly walked over to her desk and sat down, studying her things. Flowers, baby’s breath, in a small vase. Old case files, hourly information reports, and news clippings littered her desk. His eyes went to the drawer she had slipped the picture frame into. He quickly opened it and pulled out the frame. A little girl with brown long curly hair. Not as light as Aleca’s. Much darker.

“ARHHH!” Aleca screamed, kicking the punching bag as hard as she could.

“Kid eh?”

She turned around, pulling her gun out of her holster, and pointing it at Ryan. He had startled her he realized. She noted that her actions had not startled him at all. “First of all it went into my drawer for a reason, for you NOT to look at it. Secondly none of your business....” She lowered her gun and put it back into her holster.

“You are my business therefore--”

“I am NOT your business. I have not been your business since you left.”

“Aleca weren’t you listening? I was on assignment in Ber--”

“Berlin. Got it. Heard it. But I am no longer your business.” She was not sure why she wasn’t telling Ryan the truth. She wanted to. God knows she did. But she couldn’t. Not then. Not there. She hadn’t forgiven him.

“Who is she Aleca?”

“My daughter obviously dumb ass.”

“With who?”

She didn’t know what to say. Her studied her again, trying to figure her out. Trying to get inside her head. He had to know who’s kid it was so he could kick the crap out of the guy. “Who Aleca?” he repeated.

“I....”

“Are you married too? Answer me damn you!” He raised his voice with anger.

“I’m not answering,” she told him, turning to leave. He quickly grabbed her arm and spun her around to look at him.

“You ain’t going anywhere darlin’ till you answer my question.” His grip on her arm sent her body into a tailspin. ~His hands~ she told herself ~those hands... God I missed them....~ “Well? Better answer soon.”

She regained her thoughts and pulled her arm out of his hand. “Fuck off Ryan.”

She left the room to the showers, leaving Ryan alone. “DAMN HER!” he screamed punching the wall. “Same fucking attitude and voice and... God damn her!!!” He looked towards the showers. He could still remember her naked and the image in his head of her in the shower taunted him. After 6 years of being away, with no physical contact with anyone other than to beat them to a pulp, he wanted nothing more but to follow Aleca. She had gotten him through those 6 years. The memory of her smell, her taste, her smile. The taunting in his head got louder and louder until he finally left and went back to the office to figure things out.

“Damn him...” she whispered and rested her hands on the wall in front of her, letting the water run down her face.
