Chapter 1 – First Day
Everything is so wrong, the house, my room, my bed. It was the worst feeling to know that you don’t know anyone anymore, not your parents, not even yourself. I tried to establish a routine. I kept repeating ‘Alarm, shower, dress, eat, bus’ in my head, but to no avail. Everything felt too foreign.
At the breakfast table, my parents were trying their best to put on a friendly, normal face, but I knew they were just trying to make me feel better, and they felt out of place on the inside too.
“Hey honey, what do you want for breakfast?” Mom said, with what had to be the fakest grin on her face.
“Nothing mom, I’ll just take a bagel.”
“Okay dear, have fun on your first day of school. Make lots of friends!”
“I know mom, I know.”
“Oh, here, don’t forget your schedule, and don’t get in trouble on your first day!”
“Mom, I know, I’ll be fine.”
“I know… just please be careful, for me?”
“I will, mom, trust me.”
I could feel her eyes staring at me, worried, as she kissed me goodbye, and I walked out of the door towards my new life. I knew everything would be fine, it was just school after all.

I was so glad that I had a car; I got at least a few minutes of time for myself before school. I didn’t like the idea of being surrounded by 30 other kids, who probably all knew each other, talking loudly about what they did over the summer, about things I probably would if I was at my own school.
I parked in my spot, which I found when we moved, so I wouldn’t have to waste my time now, and I stepped out and looked for my class.
“Shit, this school didn’t look so big a few minutes ago…” I said desperately, looking around for my first period.
I looked around for the first unoccupied person I could find, and I started to talk to him.
“Hey, I’m Kevin, I’m new here. Would you happen to know where this room is?”
He glanced at the spot where I was pointing on my schedule and said, “Oh, that’s cool, we have the same home room. You can follow me, I’m headed there now. My name’s Steve, where’d you come from?”
“Oh, I’m from Virginia.”
“Cool, though isn’t that a bit far from here. Heh, California isn’t exactly a few steps away. Why’d you move, anyway?”
At this point, I probably should have known better than to answer all these questions, but I was just happy that I had made a friend, and I didn’t want to blow him off. So, I calmly stated, “I don’t know, my parents never told me, I think it has something to do with an accident.”
“Oh, is that right… well, here we are, Room 413, Eastwood High, after you sir.”
He bowed sarcastically and I gave him an equally sarcastic glare as I walked tentatively into this classroom. It was a normal room, about thirty desks arranged in a stereotypical grid, with the teacher’s deck and a dry erase whiteboard at the front. English wasn’t my favorite subject, then again, at least I kinda knew someone. Once the bell rang, the teacher walked in, a tall, thin middle-aged black woman with a pale lavender dress and matching shoes. She looked nice enough, but first impressions aren’t always real.
“Hello, and welcome to English IV. It’s nice to see all these familiar faces, I’m sure you all must be ecstatic to have me again for English. Wait now, what’s this? A new face?” Staring straight at me, she said with faked interest, “Now what might your name be?”
Steve quickly shot up and took the pleasure of answering for me. “Oh, Ms. Jenkins, his name is Kevin, he’s one of them.”
I stared at him, confused, and he simply smiled and sat down, seeming satisfied with himself.
“Oh, is that right, well, Mr. Kevin, I hope you don’t expect special treatment just because you were sent here.”
“No ma’am,” I said quietly, only wanting to figure out what was going on, since everyone seemed to know but me.
The period progressed fairly quickly after that, except I could hear snickering and whispers all around me; people kept glancing back in front of me, and I could feel the stares from behind. I stared desperately at Steve, but he just shrugged and ignored me for the rest of the period. By the time the end of the period came around, I was dead embarrassed, and there was nothing even the teacher could do to stop the rest of the kids.
I was spooked by the bell, and it happened again, everyone was staring in my direction, including the teacher, and all I could think was ‘Oh no, not again, not again!’
Already having my bag, I quickly darted around the desks to leave, and as I thought, no one looked away from my desk.
“Damn it, I was right, I didn’t even want it to happen this time…”
I reached for the doorknob, and I scared the hell out of myself when my hand passed right through it.
“What? Is this a new power?”
I went with it, since I didn’t have much of a choice at the moment, and I passed through the door, passing through the walls towards my next class, which Steve had told me earlier was near the opposite side of the school. Occupied in my thoughts, I passed through walls, lockers, people, classrooms, and no one gave a passing glance.
After about a minute of brooding, I was rudely wakened when I collided flat into something, or more like someone. I looked at him, bewildered, and his friends were too. I got up on my own, and his friends, who were laughing at him at the moment for being a klutz, helped him up. He gave his friends the okay to go ahead; he’d catch up after he got his stuff. After they left, he gave me the signal to follow him. At this point, I was still scared that I could feel him at all; better yet that he could see me.
He led me into an empty hallway, and looking around carefully, started to talk.
“Where are you from?”
Angrily, I said “Is it that obvious that I’m new? Why is everyone so curious? I’m from Virginia, I’m Kevin, and you are?”
“I’m sorry for being so forward, but its not every day that I get tackled down by someone in the middle of the halls. Then again, I’m new here too, so I’m in the same boat as you. I’m Nick, nice to meet you.”
“Ya… Nick is it? Do you have any fucking clue what the hell is going on? You sound like you know what you’re talking about.”
“Hmm… it’s getting close to the late bell, what’s your next class?”
“Study Hall a few rooms down I think.”
“Today’s full of coincidences I guess, come on, let’s go,” but after a pause, he reconsidered and said, “Hold on a minute though. Let me see your hand.”
I looked at him strangely, but when he took my hand, I couldn’t suppress a blush. I looked away nervously as he led me to a wall and touched our hands to the wall. His stopped, but mine passed through. Luckily, the blush passed and he just instructed me to think about changing back. He tried it again, and both of our hands stopped at the wall. I was relieved, for once today.
“Hurry up, we’ll be late for second period,” he said as he ran ahead of me, leaving me to stumble behind him, blushing furiously in confusion.

Tell me what you guys think, the story is still young, and at this point I’ll change the story to add some warnings for future chapters, though the rating will stay constant for now I think.
