Hesitant Charm
October 2nd, 2004. just a few weeks away to achieve our grand plan. The plan to shake this whole place in complete riot and commotion. We decided that on Halloween night, when everyone will be attending drunken parties in dowdy costumes and hazy grins. We would finally show everyone in here their reality, their decaying souls. We would burn the religious center to the ground once and for all. To stop them proclaiming their insincere message that what they say and do only is accepted by the lord and anyone who acts against their wishes is eternally banished from god’s mercy. That’s ought to show them!
“Anything wrong Alex?” Carl worried tone cut my string of thoughts. His shimmering icy blues studied me apprehensively, trying to read the intense emotions that reflected in my eyes. He was always the worrier between us, especially about me.
“No, just thinking about Halloween” I sighed shuffling my text book away on my bedroom floor. His penetrating gaze remained locked on me for a few seconds before he added.
“You still wanna go through it, right?”
“Of course!” I yelped, “Nothing in this universe will stop me”
“ Good, cuz you better know what were doing is the right thing. Its gonna teach everyone around here to stop living a lie and to get their head straight” he said stroking my back with his thin yet very strong arm. Why did it always feel this good to be so close to him? He always knew how to comfort me, to subdued all the pain and confusion I always suffered with.
“I know that” I sighed again offering him a warm smile.
“it sounds very dangerous and risky, I understand that” he replied through a vexed grin, “but it’ll turn out fine, trust me on that one” he used his hand to push a few golden stray strands behind his ear. How I envied him for that mop of soft golden tresses. “did I ever disappoint you before?”
“there’s always a first time!” I teased.
He chuckled and punched me on the arm, it hurt me a bit but from him it was such an enjoyable pain. I gazed at his long, poignant features, even when he was happy his eyes reflected such sadness I never understood where he got it from. His longish nose sloped in the middle of his face making him look even sadder. The way his eyes looked always watery and on the verge of tears always intrigued me. Amazed me in the same time too. Carl held such magic in him, I believe I was the only one who can see it, through his shimmering icy blues. It might sound corny but I believe he resembled the pensive image of a knight. Yeah, it sounds grossly corny but that’s how I see him.
“Shit, I’m gonna get late!” he announced jumping on his feet and gathering his books and notes.
“Oh, now! Aren’t you ever gonna quit that pathetic job of yours. It takes up most of your time and the salary is not even worth it” I whined pulling him from his arm. He turned to face me and huffed annoyingly.
“You think I don’t know that, it’s the best thing I can get in this fucking place” he grunted. Carl works in one of our local chain fast food joints called “Yummy Tree” which is always infested with hyperactive kids and good-for-nothing delinquents. Its greasy, noisy, and well the name of the place says it all.
“quit and I assure you I’ll beg my old man to hire us in the boat house” I pleaded giving my best puppy eyes look and the most endearing pout I can fake. The boat house was the boating utility shop my dad owns and runs. He makes tons of cash since our little town is revolved around the business that we get from tourism on our white spotless beach and the fishing industry. And he happens to own the only shop that supplies fishing equipment and rent motor boats.
“You think he’ll take us?” he asked doubtfully raising an eyebrow.
“he just fired two guys that use to work for him for stealing, so I don’t think he has much of a choice” I said with gleaming eyes.
“Stealing?! What the hell is there to steal from the boat house?!” he laughed throwing his head back. His slightly crooked front tooth appeared through his laughing gaped mouth. I always feel a twinge of guilt every time I spot his crooked tooth, knowing that I was the one who caused it. I was the one who annoyingly nagged him to skate board with me knowing exactly that he had a very bad balance and a weak knee. You can figure out the rest of the scenario.
“who knows” I shrugged, “maybe they wanted to sell the plastic baits and the fish nets in the fishing black market” I added with a sarcastic tone.
“Bet there is a lot of money in that” he sniggered throwing his messenger bag on his shoulder. “well, call you tonight then”
“okay, and I will put my own life at risk and ask for the job. So you better appreciate it” I said shaking a warning finger.
“ fine with me, ill try not to miss the funeral ” he chuckled before leaving my room, “See ya!”
just another ordinary day from our very ordinary life’s. if Only I knew that will all drastically change, if only I had the chance to restore it all.
