Out Of The Dust
Chapter 2.
Sandy sat on a chair near the door watching Alex and Tony playing with the few toys Lacey had been able to find in the city. They were good children and never really caused any trouble apart from their constant need for chocolate. It seemed like only yesterday when she had been that young , now here she sat as big a a house about to bring a nothing being into the world. Even at eight months it still hadn’t sunk in that she was going to have a child. It seemed so grown up. Sandy stared again at the door. Lacey had been gone such a long time. It didn’t usually take this long to get food, something must have happened! Lacey wouldn’t let anyone near the door always putting herself in harms way for them. Sandy knew that she could be of no help at the moment she was tired all the time and could move no faster then a waddle at the moment. Often she drifted into a dream world at this time of day back to when she had had no cares in the world. Back to a time when she had been safe in the love of James. It was still painful to think of him. She would never see him again. Ever the strike zone was right next to them. One year that’s all that separated them. One year meant that their child would never know his or her father. It was that thought that hurt more then her own loss. James had been the greatest man alive. He had swept into her life and changed it for the better.
‘What did I ever do without you?’ Sandy rolled over and stared James right in the eyes. Two months. That’s all it had taken for this man to make his way into her heart and her bed.
‘Probably got by knowing that I would turn up. This is true love we are lucky it’s rare bt I knew from the moment I saw you that this was it that we were going to be in each others lives forever. This is it for me. There will be no one else ever. We will marry and have children and grow old in the safe knowledge that we will be together there is no greater gift in life then that.’ Sandy hadn‘t realised she was crying till James leaned over her and kissed her tears away. It was that very night that Sandy conceived it would be the second to last time they would see each other.
Sandy swiped the tears from her face before the children saw. It didn’t do them any good to see her cry . The sound of the key fitting in the lock finally put Sandy’s heart at rest about Lacey’s safety. She walked into the room a little flushed but in one piece thank god.
‘Hey!’ The children came running over straight away grabbing her legs.
‘You were gone so long Anna stated as she threw her arms around Lacey’s leg.
‘I know honey. I’m so sorry for worrying you I just got a little caught up with something. I have presents for all you if you sit down I will get them for you!’ The children quickly sat in the corner they used when either Sandy or Lacey were reading to them Five bright faces turned to Lacey as she fished in her bag. She pulled out five small bags all containing equal amounts of jelly beans.
‘Once they are gone they are gone it was hard enough getting them. Ok.’
‘Ok’ they replied and each took a bag. She knew they would last long but at least it made a special treat for them all. It was hard for them living in such small quarters Lacey knew this.
Walking over to Sandy she sat down and placed a hand on her distended stomach.
‘How’s the little one? You look tired have the kids been playing up?’
‘Fine and no they have been good as gold it’s just this,’ Sandy said pointing to her stomach’ gets in the way a bit. The kids were asking me whether they can go outside yet but by your late return I would guess at no. what happened?’
