chapter 2, as promised. the first few will be setting things up, please be patient. for those wondering, the twins have a bit of growing up to do before they start in on the fun. please review!!!
Marcus leaned against his cart in front of Marita’s hut. She had told him to come by, that she had one last thing to sell to him before he left. Marcus was a free roaming trader; he had no allegiances except to himself. He could pass through the borders of any country with barely a hitch, carrying whatever he managed to acquire.
Sometimes he sold silver, other times he sold flesh. He dearly hoped that Marita had decided to sell the twins; he had a wealthy patron in the Empire who would pay handsomely for such perfect little children.
He would never understand the man’s taste, but then again he didn’t need to. All he needed was money.
Marita stuck her head out of her hut tentatively. Her face was tear streaked and her eyes looked haunted. She motioned to him and he came to the door.
“I have nothing, they’ve taken it all. Please, I’ve reconsidered. I’ll- I’ll…” her voice trailed off as a fresh wave of tears swelled up in her eyes. Marcus nodded at her and she stepped back from the door. He came in and she clapped a hand over her mouth as he bent and picked up Aurora.
“Hello there sweetheart, I’m your Uncle Marcus, and we’re going to go for a little ride,” he said gently. Aurora stuck her thumb in her mouth and looked worriedly at her mother sobbing in the corner.
Marita sank to the floor crying, and Marcus looked over in pity. He knew she would never forgive herself for this, but she had chosen it. As she let out a fresh wail he almost reconsidered, but there really was no going back. She had made the decision to sell them, and even a verbal contract was binding.
He turned and carried Aurora out and set her down in the back of his cart. Her wide blue eyes stared up at him and he quickly looked away. Adrian was harder to get, he had gone over to his mother and was shaking her, asking her what was wrong.
He wouldn’t let her go and just kept asking what was wrong. She gazed up at her son with fear filled eyes, realizing what she had done. Marcus swept the boy up and carried him to the cart. Adrian fought back; but half-starved and only three years old, he wasn’t much of a problem.
Marcus put him in the cart next to his little sister, who, sensing something was wrong, started crying. Marcus closed and locked the wooden door, sealing the twins in darkness. He grabbed a bag under the front seat and took it back to Marita.
“Here,” was all he said, laying the bag at her feet.
Marcus shook his head as he headed back to the cart, climbed in the driver’s seat and took the reigns. I was going to be a long trip back to the Empire with two screaming children. He hoped that Lord Antoni would pay well for them; they were going to be a handful.
