What had happened
The weather was warm and there was a bird chipping outside my window. My radio was blaring but at the moment I didn't care. I was in my dream, in nirvana. Reality came back when a voice came from downstairs, "Josh! Alex! Wake up! You don't want to be late for your first day of school?!"
That was me, Alexis Beverly Carter and the voice said that I had to wake up. At the ripe age of 14, I did not want to start at a new school. I just wanted to sleep some more. The same idea was on the mind of my brother, Josh, who was 18. We were starting at a new school this year and the first day of school was always dreadful. There are always the groups and fitting into an already formed group was hard at a new school.
I had protested loudly against moving, protested against the whole idea, but what did that matter? I remember the whole fight as if it were yesterday. I had come home and there was a strange person in the living room, and when I asked whom it was mom and dad just told me to do my homework in the kitchen. Of course, I went to the kitchen not saying a word of protest. My older brother, Josh, was at the end of the hallway with his year to the wall. He towered over me at a nice height of 6 ft. 2 inches and had grown up a lot. I remember when we were little he was this gawky little kid but now, due to sports and just puberty, he was this buff guy with the most piercing deep brown eyes. He was your classic dark tall and handsome type. Not that it mattered to me; I mean that’s my brother! None the less, all the girls always told me, aren’t you so lucky to have such a hottie as my brother.
Josh's full name was Riley Joshua Carter but one day in the third grade, he had come home and announced that Riley was a dumb name and asked to be called Josh. Ever since then his name was Josh, but mom never forgave him for changing his name without her consent.
"What are you doing?" I had said" Why aren't you at football practice?"
"You don't say hi to your older brother? You are a rude little girl" He said lightheartedly, then paused and replied "What's it look like I doing?"
"Eavesdropping... And practice?"
"Mom made me stay home today."
"Do you know what going on? Why there is a strange guy in our living room?"
"Well if little miss motor mouth would shut up, I would be able to find out."
"Ok, Ok, I'll -"
Before I could finish my parents had appeared in the doorway and asked us to join them in the living room.
After my parents and the strange man, who turned out to be their realtor named Mr. Galt, explained to us that we were moving, the room broke out in argument. Neither Josh nor I wanted to move. This was Josh's senior year and my last year of junior high. Josh had just made starting quarterback on the school football team and I was currently the most popular smart kid in the whole entire school! Life was perfect for us there, but we knew that our parents were unhappy there. And now that they had gotten the inheritance from our filthy rich grandparents, they thought it was time to move. My parents argued that the schools we would be attending were full of smart kids and a great football team. But Josh and I didn't like this; we wanted to be the best, not one of the best. As a final effort, both Josh and I said" We’d do anything if we don't have to move. Please mo~m, da~d" with puppy dog eyes, but this didn't sway our parents. Mom and dad just said “Riley Joshua Carter and Alexis Beverly Carter go to your rooms NOW!" And that was that, we were moving.
We had moved the previous Saturday and both Josh and I were going to start at their new school in the middle of a semester. Everyone would know each other and everything would be scary. We wouldn't even be going to the same school... we wouldn't know anyone.
