Love and Pixie Dust
All three children jumped out of bed quickly awoken by the sound of shattering glass downstairs. Chaic darted to the door and ran downstairs while Chaille took Korin to comfort him. He rounded the corner at the bottom of the stairs then stopped suddenly before he ran into a kitchen full of broken dishes. He let out a sigh of partial relief. “Miss Karrson, just stay right where you are, I’ll get this all cleaned up quickly as possible.”
Chaic tiptoed carefully over to his mother, “Are you okay? Did you try to reach the top cabinet again? You could have woke me up I’d have helped you make breakfast.” His mother’s eyes widened and she began to bat at him, “Don’t touch me! Who are you!” He stepped back and winced with pain as small glass shards penetrated the bottoms of his feet, “Mom! Stop hitting me! It’s Chaic. Mom!” The small womean’s eyes softened an she shook her head frantically, “No, no. My son’s name is Dylan. Not Chaic.”
Chaic stood bewildered as his mother walked toward him, glass cracking as she walked over it. She didn’t even flinch. “Mom, maybe you should wait until Miss Abby comes back and gets this all swept up.” “Mommy!” Korin called from the stairway. She heard and her body jerked but she kept her eyes fixated on Chaic as she reached her hands up to his cheeks.
She looked directly into his eyes, “Dylan. Dylan, Mommy is sorry. I tried to make him go away. That bad man took us, but I tried. You believe, Mommy, don’t you Dylan?” Chaic looked over at Miss Abby, the nurse, who had just got back to see her strange spell. Miss Abby nodded for Chaic to go along with her. “I believe you, Mom.”
Just as quickly as she lapsed into her spell, her eyes became cold again and she looked away from him. “Who made this mess!” She was becoming angry again. “I did, Mom,” Chaic lied. She looked at him with disgust. “Clean it up. Clean it up!” “I will, Mom. Just let…” He couldn’t finish his sentence before her eyes changed again and she began screaming. Miss Abby walked toward them both slowly and grabbed the phone to call the hospital and an ambulance.
Korin ran toward their mother wriggling free out of Chaille’s grasp, “Mommy, stop yelling at Chaic! He didn’t do anything wrong.” She turned to look at her little boy and screamed as if she was terrified of him, “Go away! Don’t touch him! Dylan, run! Get back you… you devil!” Korin stood in the doorway shaking. His own mother had called him a devil. She had looked right into her six year old’s eyes and spat the most hateful words a small fragile soul could handle.
Before anyone could react to what had just happened, the doctors and paramedics arrived and burst through the door. Chaic stared in disbelief and horror as he watched everything pass by in slow motion. Doctors piling themselves on top of his kicking and screaming mother as they tried to sedate her. Blood curdling screams as if she were dying, and his baby brother lying on the ground shaking and crying like a scared, wounded animal, his sister trying to hold him as tears streamed down her own face. He stepped back, leaning against the counter for support as everything became slower, the scene dimming into darkness until finally his whole world faded completely as he passed out.
Chaic opened his eyes but shut them immediately when the extremely bright lights him them. He slowly opened them again, squinting as he got used to the light. “Chaic…” For a moment he didn’t move until he heard his name once more and jumped. “Abby! Abby where’s Mom? Where is Chaille and Korin?” Tears welled up in her eyes as she threw her arms around him.
Abby was only 22, she had been dating Chaic for months, that’s how she got the job taking care of his mother. He hugged her tightly, “Abby, where are they?” She let go of him and tried her best to look him in the eyes, “Chaille is fine. Korin won’t speak to anyone, we think its just shock.” Chaic looked around a bit at the hospital room, ‘How long have I been in here?’ He looked at his bandaged feet. ‘Glass,’ he thought to himself. “So,” he wiped the tears from his eyes, “What’d they do with Mom?”
