Chapter 2

Disclaimer: This is almost entirely fictional, besides a few characters and situations that I\'m basing loosely on personal experience. Names, places, and dates have been changed, and I\'m not making any money off of this, so please don\'t sue me. Also, please don\'t steal my characters... I love them. I would be oh-so-sad if you took them away.

Notice: I apologize ahead of time for any spelling mistakes you might find... I can\'t find spellcheck! *hides*

***This one\'s going to have a bit of mild child molestation in it... don\'t read if you can\'t handle it.***

shorty450-- Thank you so much for the review! Thus far I\'ve had plenty of views, and only one review... but your review inspired me to write more. At least one person\'s enjoying it, ha.

He left her. He waited until she\'d been as vulnerable as she could ever possibly be, kissed her... teased her with what she knew she could never have. And then he left her.Even as she yelled that she wanted him to come back, to stay... even as she cried out and begged for him not to leave her, she was glad to see him get in his truck and go. A part of her hated Chuck Maguire. A part of her hoped he got in an accident as he sped away. A part of her hoped he died. For one spiteful, petty moment, she imagined the collision. She imagined his blood... his body mangled and tangled with tons of metal. And just as quickly as she had imagined it, it was gone. She was suddenly overcome with the desire to apologize to him for imagining his death. She cursed quietly to herself over her stupidity, and starting driving in the opposite direction... back towards her home. She glanced at the clock, and grimaced at the glowing numbers of 4:17. Norah was going to KILL her.

He didn\'t get more than two miles away from her before regretting his flight. Running from temptation wasn\'t the right approach. You confront temptation. You defy it in the name of the Son of God. You don\'t kiss it and then run away from it. As he continued driving, he wondered to himself when had Tori gone from being his angel to a temptation he needed to confront and defy? It seemed like just a moment ago, he\'d been worshipping the girl... now the thought of her made him want to go into a prayer closet and never leave. He wanted to blame her. He needed to blame her. He couldn\'t live with himself if he\'d indeed initiated that contact. She provoked him... she made him. He had no control.

Once again, he found himself pulling over to the side of the road, holding his head in his hands. Oh God! What if she thought that he made her do it? She\'d been through too much trauma over the years... he\'d always had a hunch that she hadn\'t entirely opened up to her family, or to him, about everything she\'d been through. The way she acted around a few of her relatives... it wouldn\'t surprise him in the least bit if they\'d touched her. That\'s precisely why he disliked the majority of her family, though no one would have believed that admission if he\'d said it aloud. Her family was the most religious, most influential family in their community. They were involved in everything and anything to do with the church, and he constantly pasted a smile on his face around them, pretending to be grateful for their hollow service... their Cane-like sacrifices. One look into that little girl\'s eye though, and he wanted to see them all shot. No, hanged. Hanging would probably be more painful. They turned a blind eye to her pain, and when they were forced to see it by others, they\'d make it out to be dramatics on her part. They admitted to parts of it, but always seem to deny the worst of it. It made his blood boil, remembering when she\'d tearfully told him about the molestation... her aunt had called him immediately after Tori had told her. She only thought it would be good for her divorce case... she didn\'t really care about Tori\'s feelings. He\'d never forget the look on her face...

FLASHBACK

A scrawny child with shadows and tears beneath her eyes sat indian-style in a shabby recliner in an old trailor. She clutched a large throw pillow in front of her like a shield, occasionally burying her head in its softness, to sob. She listened to her aunt, a large, loud woman telling the new semi-new preacher about what had happened to her. It had upset her so much to tell her aunt, but to hear her cold description of the events to this man she barely knew... it was nearly unbearable. She sobbed a bit more.

\"She said that she went with him to take trash to the dump or something like that, and on the way he pulled over and began touching her.\" The pastor couldn\'t help at gawk at the woman for a minute. He knew her family relatively well... he wasn\'t as new as Tori thought he was. To think that he\'d seen the man who\'d hurt this little girl... he\'d sat in a pew in his own church, right next to her. She had to live with being near her tormentor every day, no exceptions, and if he\'d been more perceptive, he could\'ve helped her.

\"The real scary part though is...\", Chuck cringed at that. What could be scarier than a pedophile molesting a helpless little girl? \"... the way she described him. I\'ve been in contact with some people who knew Paul before we got married, to possibly gain a bit of leverage in the court case. I talked to his ex-mother-in-law, and she said that his ex-wife had told her, in confidence, right before they split up, that sometimes Paul wasn\'t Paul. She said \'he\'s like the devil\'. And that\'s exactly how Tori described him to me. Didn\'t you Tori?\".

The girl peered at them both from above the pillow, which was currently hiding her face. \"Put down the pillow, Tori, and tell Pastor Chuck what you told me\". He realized, of course, at this point she didn\'t care about Tori... she just wanted someone else to hear the story. They could call him as a witness during her divorce trial. He felt like hitting the bitch.

He smiled weakly at the girl, as she gingerly laid her pillow aside. She took a deep, calming breath, and began. \"I told Aunt Tina that when he had me in his truck, he... he looked like the devil. He wasn\'t right. He wouldn\'t stop looking at me funny... he touched me. I asked him to stop, but he said he never would\", here, the girl broke down. He made a move to go hug her, but she glared up at him, through her tears, and he knew if he\'d touched her right then, she would\'ve never trusted him again. \"He said he\'d kill me if I told.\"

Pure, unadulterated rage had run through his veins at that point. He hadn\'t had any special feelings toward the girl, before, but now he felt a strong urge to protect her, to let her know everything was alright, to assure her that God would handle the situation. How could he express that adequately to a child, though?

\"I didn\'t tell her that his ex said that, Pastor. She was just telling me what happened, and it came out. I think it could be evidence, don\'t you?\". He glanced at the woman in front of him for a mere moment, knowing if his gaze lingered on her face she\'d see the contempt in his eyes. \"Possibly\", he said.

\"Tell him the rest, Tori. This is where I think she\'s making it up... I don\'t know why she needs to lie. It\'s bad enough the way it is!\".

\"It\'s... it\'s not a lie. I don\'t know why he said it. I didn\'t want him to. He... he kissed me on the mouth. With his tongue. It was so gross!\", the girl began sobbing again. \"I asked him to stop again. I was always asking him to stop. Then he finally said he couldn\'t stop because I wouldn\'t let him. He said when... when he married Tina, it was just to be close to me. He told me he loved me. Wished he could\'ve married me instead.\" The girl was rocking back and forth now, nearly having a fit from what the memory was doing to her.

\"Paul loved me!\", Tina cried, outrage. She glared at the preacher, her angry eyes pleading with him to call the girl a liar... to prove that she hadn\'t totally screwed up the girl\'s life. But Chuck just stared at the girl in front of him... and after a few minutes had passed, snapped back to reality, ignoring Tina altogether, and began reminding the little girl of Christ\'s love for her.

~*~*~*~*~

Chuck turned his truck on and turned around. He had to go find her. Had to make sure that she knew he wasn\'t like that. He hadn\'t meant to use her... would never use her. He loved her. He shook his head, realizing he\'d better leave that last bit off. Some things are better left unsaid.
