“Hello Mr. Ashmen.”
Kinoru frowned as he stood in the doorway, dumfounded as he saw the tall, slender and dark-haired man standing in the center of HIS living room. The man was in a finely tailored black suit, a crisp white shirt standing out in shocking contrast to the blood red silk tie. He stood, Kinoru estimated, around 6 feet tall, maybe a little more, but definitely no less, and he held the height well; where most taller people seemed to want to shrink in upon themselves, this man stood tall and straight. He lips were thin and perfect for the arrogant smile that they were currently formed into, and his almost black eyes held just the right amount of laughter for Kinoru to know that his reaction was causing the man some amount of amusement. All in all the man looked like he had more money then Kinoru had ever made in his entire like and in showed in every aspect of the man, from his short yet trendily cut hair to his scuff less shoes.
The man before Kinoru looked infinitely out of place in the soft and comfortable blues, golds and greens that Kinoru had decorated his living room in; where as the living room seemed real and inviting, the man before him looked too perfect to be true and equally unreachable. The man looked even MORE out of place because Kinoru was pretty sure that he hadn’t invited him.
“I’m sure you’re confused Mr. Ashman, I had your landlord let me in.” Kinoru’s frown deepened as he thought that confused wasn’t quite the word her was thinking of; perhaps more along “in great amounts of pain and with limited brain functionality.”
Also, he was beginning to think the other man was smirking.
“Why are you here, Mr. …” Kinoru left off as he carefully shut the door, wondering idly if he should just run away as fast as he could and call the police. In the end, he didn’t think he could really run all that far if Mr. I’m-in-a-suit-and-in-a-place-where-I-shouldn’t-be decided to chase after him.
“Lawrence, Dominic Lawrence. I’m the president of a little know exploration operation that has been responsible for some little know, but highly valuable scientific discoveries.”
Kinoru watched as Dominic reached his carefully manicured hand into his pocket and for a moment he was afraid Dominic was reaching for a gun; however, in the end, he only pulled out a small card. Dominic slowly walked from the living room over to Kinoru, who was still standing in the entrance hall, and handed over the card. Kinoru took a moment to look at the nicely designed card with a small graphic of a compass in the corner that said little to nothing of the nature of Mr. Dominic Lawrence’s “little known exploration operation.”
Kinoru looked up in obvious confusion and, for a moment, was caught by Dominic’s stormy grey eyes. Kinoru frowned again as he tore his eyes from Dominic’s ; he was beginning to think that his face was going to be permanently set in a frown and that he couldn’t believe that he was thinking about “stormy grey eyes” when he was this exhausted.
“Mr. Lawrence, I’m sure you’re a wonderful person and I’m sure that you have a wonderful business, but unless you’re about to tell me why you’re in my apartment, I’ve had a … really long day…”
Kinoru didn’t have to think about whether or not Dominic was smirking now, it was a fact.
“Forgive me Mr. Ashman, I didn’t mean to make this day any worse for you;” smirk, “ however I have a preposition about a delicate operation that I’d like to present you.”
Kinoru was now beginning to feel a little annoyance, “Mr. Lawrence I’m sure you enjoy spending hours talking around in circles, and normally I might even enjoy doing so with you; however as I explained before, today I’m running low on patience and if…”
“Again, I apologize Mr. Ashman. As you said, I’m use to ‘talking in circles.’ So I’ll be frank, I need your expertise to help us find an artifact. The artifact is called the ‘Vial of the Wyrm.’ It was an ancient Chinese relic that is said to posses the power to transform humans into Dragons.”
Kinoru sighed and put his bag on the coffee table in the entrance way, waving Dominic to follow him into the living room.
Kinoru had been very happy when he had been allowed to remodel the apartment to his tastes, and the first thing he had done was to remake the white and sanitary look of the living room. He had first painted the walls thick, alternating vertical stripes of soft blue and green which was broken up by golden shadow images of bamboo. There was one large couch in front of the fire place that was cream with a golden bamboo motif and a low black lacquered coffee table that was off-centered from the couch with plush cream, blue and green pillows surrounding it. All in all the room had a very calming and serene feeling to it, but this was all lost on Kinoru as he sunk down into the lush sofa; he was far too exhausted to feel it’s effects.
“Mr. Lawrence, I don’t know why you’ve snuck into my house when you could have gone to my office, but I’m afraid to tell you that I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. I don’t know anything about, nor have I ever heard of this.” Kinoru said tiredly. “What’s more, I’m not sure what ‘expertise’ you are referring to. I am good at what I do, however I am not the best and from the looks of you,” Kinoru said waving to the obviously expensive suit Dominic was wearing, “you can afford the best.”
Dominic smiled at Kinoru as he took a seat on the pillows surrounding the table, and idly loosened his tie as he took in the tired form before him. The man was obviously worn out and in pain and there was a small knit of lines between the finely shaped eyebrows. A nasty bruise was forming just under his left eye, making it slightly puffy and swollen; it also had the effect of making Kinoru’s pale blue eyes even paler. The white bandage that was wrapped around his forehead was a stark contrast to the silky black of Kinoru’s long black hair; hair that was escaping from under and around the bandage, as unruly as the rest of him looked. The total look of helplessness and defeat that the other man emitted made Dominic feel a strange pull towards Kinoru, and he soon found himself sitting next to him on the plush sofa; his hand reaching out before he even knew he was doing it.
Dominic reached out and gently turned Kinoru’s face towards him, he then reached up and slowly brushed some of the unruly hair back from Kinoru’s confused face. The confusion made Kinoru look beautiful in a transgender kind of way, it reminded Dominic of a statue of an Angel in his Grandfathers home; beautiful and perfect despite the toll that weather had taken on it.
Questions burned inside of Kinoru and he had just parted his lips to ask one of the many that were flittering about in his mind, when Dominic pressed his thumb to lips and silenced him.
“There are many reasons why we have chosen you, why I have chosen you, and believe me a lot of work went into finding the person that would best suit our needs. However, I can’t give you any further details until you’ve signed on to our project and signed a privacy agreement. As I mentioned before this is a very sensitive subject and keeping it quiet is our top priority. What I’ve told you right now, I have only told you in an effort to get you to help us. Of course, I’m not expecting you to make this decision right now; especially because you are not in a good condition to make any decisions except the one about you getting to bed.”
Kinoru just looked at Dominic, too confused for words and trying to absorb all of the information that he had just received. Of course, he couldn’t really talk anyway as Dominic’s thumb was still warm pressed against his lips. Finally Kinoru just sighed and nodded, still unsure of what was being asked of him, but having decided that he would think about it all later. Dominic had a way about him, that made Kinoru feel like he wanted to do as he was told; and right now, Kinoru was in no shape to fight against that submissive urge.
Dominic smiled again, and removed his hand when he was sure that the inner conflict in that played out in Kinoru’s eyes was agreeing with him, he then stood up and straightened his tie. “Good, I’ve left a packet of information detailing what your jobs, and the requirements for the job, are on the table in your kitchen. I’ve also left figures for what we will pay you; of course we are open for negotiation on that matter. Also, I’ve left you a small gift; I hope you’ll enjoy it.” Looking down at a diamond inlayed watch, Dominic sighed. “Unfortunately I have to leave, on the back of the card I gave you I’ve written my cell phone number. Please call me when you’ve come to a decision, I expect hear back from you within a week.”
Kinoru just numbly nodded again, and watched as the other man walked to the kitchen table and grabbed an expensive looking suitcase.
“Well, get some rest Kinoru, and please think very hard about my preposition. I think you’ll be perfect for the job, you’ve got abilities that I don’t even think you realize you have.” Dominic carefully straightened his tie again in a mirror hanging on a wall in the kitchen, and sent off a dashing smile in Kinoru’s direction where he was looking over the back of the couch. “Well then, don’t get up, I’ll let my self out.” Laughing lightly Dominic walked into the entry hall and opened the door, glancing back and waving at the bewildered man still watching him. “I expect to hear positively from you, I’m looking foreword to working with you soon.”
Kinoru watched as, without another word, Dominic left his home and shut the door. Kinoru slowly sank back into the couch and sat there in a dumbfounded daze. He was trying to process what had been said to him, but no matter how long he thought about it, nothing about any of what had happened today seemed real. Kinoru closed his eyes briefly before opening them tiredly and walking into the master bathroom to brush his teeth.
By the time he had made his way into bed, he was already half way asleep; and thanks to his medicine, as soon as he was comfortably settled under his thick comforter he found himself in a deep and thank-fully dreamless sleep.
