Chapter Two

Chapter Two

Rachel took extra care in dressing for her first day with Scott Haynes. She was so beyond nervous, that she had changed clothes four times already. Hallie had finally told her that she’d disown her as a best friend, if she changed one more time. She gathered her camera and her bag, and said goodbye to her friend. She was supposed to meet the professor in the classroom before going to Haynes’s offices. She supposed that she was going to be told that she needed to be on her best behavior, as if she didn’t know that. She was cutting it really close, she took off in a trot to get there on time. When she did get their, her red hair was everywhere. She normally had it put up, but she’d decided that she should leave it down. She quickly ran a brush through and was about to go through the doors, when a girl she didn’t recognize came up behind her.

“ Hathaway, who the hell did you sleep with to get the top spot? You’ve always been the professor’s favorite, and now I’m not the only one who hates you.” Rachel didn’t take time to find out who she was, because she was running really late. When she entered the room, the class grew eerily silent. All of them were looking at them, and the air was faintly hostile. Instead of taking her normal seat in the back, she chose one in the front.

Professor Lawrence stood up from behind her desk, and smiled at the class. She knew that everyone was nervous, especially Rachel. She’d gotten the top spot, and would therefore be interning with Scott Haynes. She knew that the other students were resenting her right now, but most of them would get over it once they started their own internships. She looked around the class and began to address them all.

“ I assume that since you are all here that you’ve seen who you will be interning with. Every artist is extremely talented and you must show them the respect they deserve. You all have your instructions and your directions. I want you to know that they will be filling me in for all of next semester, so behave. Most importantly, though, I want you to have fun. You may all go, but Rachel if you could stay behind a moment.” As everyone filed out of the room, it was as if they were all glaring at her. She walked up the professor’s desk, and waited. Once everyone was out of the room, she turned to face her with a smile on her face.

“ You did fabulous on your paper, you know. I had a feeling that you were going to give me something extraordinary. I’m afraid that I’ve made you late, but I wanted you to know that I thought you did excellent work. Tell Scott that I held you over, okay? I do hope you know that he’s probably going to give you a hard time at first.” Rachel sighed and nodded. She had figured since she got the top spot, that she was going to be used as a secretary at first. When at last the professor let her go, she walked out of the room. She was going to be almost an hour late on her first day, and she knew that Mr. Haynes wasn’t going to be happy about this.

Rachel walked into the outer office of Haynes offices. She hadn’t been quite as late as she had thought, but it was close to it. There was a receptionist behind a plain desk when she walked in. She walked up the desk, but the girl acted as if she didn’t see her. She cleared her throat, but the girl still ignored her. She looked around the desk to see if she was supposed to sign something, and when she didn’t see anything, she got more than a little annoyed.

“ Excuse me, I’m Rachel Hathaway. I’m the intern for Mr. Haynes.” The girl placed the magazine she’d been reading down on the desk, and stared at her for a minute.

“ Are you really? Because I was under the impression that you were supposed to be here over forty-five minutes ago. Mr. Haynes does not like to be kept waiting, and it’s seriously not a good thing to do on your first day. Have a seat, and I’ll page him to see if he still wants to use you.” She then picked up the phone and dialed a short number. She was on the phone for a while, and hung up.

Rachel was starting to get extremely nervous, because she wasn’t saying anything to her. She knew she was late, but it wasn’t her fault. Her professor told her that it would be fine as long as she told him she was the reason he was late. She looked at the clock and saw that it now said 10:15 a.m. She was supposed to have been back there at nine, and she had the distinct feeling that she was going to get sacked before she even had the opportunity to start. After another five minutes or so, the door to Mr. Haynes office opened, and they guy who had been in her class the other day emerged. At first she thought he was just here talking to him, but she soon saw that he was in fact Mr. Haynes. She looked down and sighed to herself, knowing this was not going to be as good a day as she thought it would. After talking to his secretary for a few moments, he walked over to where she was sitting. His face was expressionless as he looked at her. He sat down in the seat next to her, and didn’t say anything for a few seconds.

“ You’re late, you know. I realize that it’s possible you could have gotten lost, but I think you’d have at least phoned. When I saw your photograph and your report, I knew I had to have you as my intern. I wasn’t expecting you be lazy, though. What I’m trying to say is, I don’t know if this is going to work out.” Rachel looked at him with an astonished look on her face. She stood up and gathered her things. She wasn’t going to work with someone as arrogant as this man appeared to be. She was going to tell him what for, then she was going to get Professor Lawrence to change her with someone else.

“ I’ll have you know that Professor Lawrence kept over after class today. She told me to tell you that it was because of her that I was late, but now I don’t care if you believe me or not. You sit there telling me how lazy I must be, and that I’m irresponsible. You don’t know me, and frankly I don’t want you to. I was looking forward to working with you, because I’m a big fan of your work. I had no idea, however, what an arrogant ass you were. I only say this, because you clearly had no intention of letting me explain why I was late. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going back to professor Lawrence, and I’m going to have her place me somewhere else. I hope you have a very rotten day.” After saying this, she marched away from him, leaving in an angry tiff.

Scott couldn’t be more pleased with her, and he hadn’t even had the chance to tell her so. This had been his way of testing her, because he didn’t want anyone who didn’t have a backbone. It was rather refreshing to have someone call you names to your face like that, because most people just fawned over him. He turned back to his secretary who was trying not to laugh at him. He grinned at her, and told her to get Professor Lawrence on the phone. He couldn’t wait to start working with her. He knew that it was going to be two months before they actually started their work, but he needed her to come back in so he could go over the ground rules with her. When he had Professor Lawrence on the phone, Rachel hadn’t yet gotten to her. He recounted the whole scene to her, and she seemed to think it was rather funny too. He explained that he definitely wanted her to be his intern, and to have come back tomorrow at the same time.

Rachel was still fuming when she entered the photography hall. The hallway that was usually bustling, was now deserted. She walked into the classroom, and found her professor behind her desk. When she saw Rachel, she showed no surprise whatsoever. She merely motioned for her to sit in a chair that had been placed in front of her desk. Once Rachel had sat down, Professor Lawrence started to speak.

“ I understand that you didn’t have a good third meeting with Mr. Haynes. I spoke with him on the phone about fifteen minutes ago. I do believe, Ms. Hathaway, that I specifically stated show them some respect. I let you meet him prior because I wanted you to get used to him. I probably should have told you who he was, but I thought it was kind of funny. I’m not mad, and frankly neither is Scott. He’s actually very amused by you, and wants you to come back tomorrow.” Rachel’s mouth dropped open in disbelief.

“ You don’t honestly think I’ll back over there, after the way him and his secretary treated me. I know you said respect, but they showed me none, and I’m of the mind you have to earn it to get it.” Professor Lawrence just smiled at her.

“ Rachel, let me be honest. He was seeing if you’d do exactly what you did. He wanted ruffle your feathers, and it would appear he succeeded. I don’t have another position available to you, so he is your only option if you want to pass. I suggest that you get to that office in the morning, and lay down your own ground rules just as he’s going to. Just because you’re his intern, doesn’t mean he can order you do absolutely everything. I’m dead serious about this being my only position, though. You have to take it or leave it.” Rachel sighed with frustration.

“ I don’t guess I have any choice in the matter, do I?” Professor Lawrence smiled and shook her head. Rachel nodded and stood up. She said goodbye to her, and left the room.

On her way to her dorm room, she mulled over in her head exactly what she was going to say Scott Haynes once she got there tomorrow. She’d tell him that he wasn’t going to treat her like that ever again. With this thought in her head, she continued to her room, still fuming over her day.
