Chapter 2
Uncle sid's POV-----------------------------------------
"Thank you Mendel" The words left my mouth with more anger than intended. My eyes never left Adams face as the butler
rose from his place in front of my wounded leg and walked out of the room. My leg ached; the blow had been worse than I
had predicted. I inwardly groaned. 'I don’t have time for this.' I thought. For the leg, for Adam, for anything I've gotten
myself into. As I continued to look at Adam it was like I could feel his emotions. He was definitely worried, and a little
confused.... and I think I even scared him a little. Something I never intended to do.
I don’t know what to say to him. He's a lot different than Ava. With her I could have made up some kind of wild story to abate
her fear. I could have kissed her and reassured her that nothing was wrong and that everything was going to be all right
. Adam was another story. He was so curious, and brighter than I'd been at his age. I couldn’t kiss and coddle him. He was
beyond that. I motioned for him to come over and stand in front of me.
Adam's POV----------------------------------------------------
I should've stayed up stairs. I should've stayed up stairs.' I repeated over and over again in my head. He looked angry,
angrier than I'd ever seen him. I shifted my weight on the stairs, wanting to run and hide in the comfort of my bed. ' It's the
same way my dad looked when he would come home.'I wanted to help him, I wanted to do anything other than what I was
doing at the moment, but I don’t think he was too happy with me being there. I took in a breath as he motioned for me to
stand across from him. I got up slowly, but walked over to him quickly, not wanting to make him angrier than he already was.
"What are you doing up." Uncle Sid said in a politer tone than he had used earlier. “I was…I heard something. And I
thought….” Adam stumbled. Sidney just stared at him. He found it only slightly amusing that he could cause this type of
reaction in someone who had been a huge part of his tough late partner’s life. He raised his arm to his head and let out a
sigh. “ You should be asleep…but look I’m really too tired to deal with this right now so could you just…” Sidney started to say
but was cut off when Adam slowly sank to his knees and started to examine Sidney’s wounded leg.
“My dad used to come home like this. Hurt, bleeding, and tired. He used to say they were accidents….but how unlucky could
someone be to get into so many accidents.” Adam said quietly, not wanting to anger his uncle. He looked up and stared into
his uncle’s eyes. “ I know your job is dangerous. And I know people hurt you and you hurt them back. I just don’t want you to leave
one day and never come back.” Adam continued truthfully.
Sidney sat back in his chair. He was dumbfounded. Adam had always been a pretty smart kid, and he knew there was
something special about him; anything Mickey created had to be. “Your father was great man, and he tried his best. He was
strong, a fighter, and he loved you.” Sidney said seriously. “I know” Adam said while lowering his head. “I’m going to take
care of you the best way I know how. But you have to help me out here. Rule number one: Never get the mail. I’ll handle
that. There could be anything in there. Rule number two: Don’t wander around the estate, especially not with Ava. There are
people who want to hurt me and will go through you two to do it. And rule number three: Listen to whatever I have to say at
all times. I’m your guardian, what I say could mean life or death in some situations. Help me up.” He slowly started to stand
up with Adam’s help.
They walked down the hallway to the master bedroom. Once there, Adam helped Sidney into the bed, he was too tired to
change. “ You’ll start your lessons with Ava in a couple of days or so. Your tutors name is Mr. Vaughn. He’s been a friend of
my family for years. His word is law.” Sidney mumbled tiredly. Adam mumbled an acknowledgment that he would do
everything his uncle said. Turning to leave, his eyes caught the shiny glare of his uncle’s handgun. Sticking out the side of his
suit pocket. He quickly glanced to see if he had been caught staring, but relaxed when he heard his uncle’s quiet snoring. He
left the room and walked upstairs to his bed, wondering how many nights he would spend taking care of his new guardian.
