Chapter 1 – BIG GIRLS DON`T CRY

“The bedrooms are devided into two building.”, Akemi explained in a workmanlike manner while she was walking hand in hand with Kiyoko through the corridor, “One of the girls, and one of the boys, each going over several stories. Every room is occupied by two students, just like the both of us living together now.” Kiyoko nodded, “I see. Characteristic for a residential school, isn’t it?” She smiled widely and listened to Akemi´s lecture. “The meals are being served in the morning, at noon and in the evening at the cafeteria, or legitimately called: the dining-hall. But the food is very good!”, Akemi went on and pushed open a heavy glass door at the end of the corridor. They entered the stairway which was spiralling upwards story on story. Akemi lead them to stairs that brought them down into the third floor and hopped down the steps cheerfully. Kiyoko followed her and laughed when her companion mounted the handrail and slid down on it. “Don’t you get wanton!” Kiyoko called after her and hopped down the last few steps. Akemi turned around and smiled. “Don’t you worry about me, this is nothing in comparison!” “And it does not have anything to do with Yamato by any chance?”
“Well…maybe a little bit.” Akemi replied ironically. She had just opened her moth to go on with her explication when loud music, apparently coming out of somebody’s earphones, reached her ears. Both girls turned around to see the source of that noise.

All the things she said, all the things she said!
Running through my head, running through my head, running through my head!
All the things she said, all the things she said!
[t.A.t.U. - All the things she said]

Singing loudly, without really noticing she was being stared at from every side, a tall and good-looking woman came round the corner.
She wore her long black hair in a thick braid which reached down her back and she was wearing sporty, and also black, clothes which brought out her well-trained figure.
A wide smile flashed over Akemi´s face and she started to walk up to the girl who was causing the loud background noise.
“G´day!”, the young woman called and gave Akemi a hard slap on the back as a greeting. Kiyoko flinched when she saw Akemi sagging after that slap but still laughing. //Uh-oh!//, Kiyoko thought when Akemi beckoned to her to come over. “This is Lily McBeth.” she introduced the other girl, “And this is Kiyoko Inoue, my new room-mate.” Lily pulled one of the ear plugs of her walkman out of her ear, took Kiyoko´s hand and shook it. //What a handshake! I bet she wins every time at arm wrestling.// “Nice to meet you!”, she said and smiled genuinely. “Nice to meet you, too.” Lily replied in almost accent-free Japanese and eyed the new girl. Akemi, who was standing in-between, grinned widely. She was glad that Kiyoko´s arrival distracted her a bit of Yôko´s sad departure to the USA and comforted her. She had lost a good friend, but something told her Kiyoko would more than only make up for her.
Kiyoko frowned and cast Lily a puzzled look. “Where are you from, which country? You speak Japanese very well!” “I hope so!”, Lily replied and bared her pretty white teeth with a smile. “I am from New Zealand, I had Japanese in high school.” Kiyoko nodded understanding. “And you are from Osaka...or at least you had been living there for a while. You can hear it in your accent!” Lily went on and her grin became a bit wider. On a weird way her smile had something intimidating, dominating about it. This woman had, what you’d call charisma. A big deal of it. Kiyoko nodded surprised. “This is true…” Akemi looked at Kiyoko and told her, still smiling, “Lily always detects things like that. Sometimes I really wonder how she is doing it.” Then she turned to Lily and gave a sweet look. Lily whereas raised one eyebrow. “What do you want Akemi? Tell me..” “May I listen, too? Pleeeaaase.” Akemi begged and made puppy eyes. “Sure.” Lily grinned and gave Akemi one earplug out of witch was still the same song blaring to share. “So, what are you two pretty ones going to do now?”, Lily asked while Akemi started to beam happily as Lily turned the volume of her walkman up. Akemi turned to her only reluctantly concentrated back on Lily’s words. “I am going to show Kiyoko around, after all she had just arrived today. But Yamato and we almost died today when Kozue was suddenly standing in my room, I tell you!” Akemi explained and gestured wildly, showing Lily how the had locked Yamato into the wardrobe under prohibition of breathing. Lily shook her head in amusement. “Typical!” Meanwhile Kiyoko continued looking Lily up and down. Especially her abdominals, which were smoothly defined and stirred with the slightest movement, fascinated Kiyoko. Lily whereas did not seem to notice Kiyoko’s admiration, and it would not have surprised Kiyoko if she would have just been used to be given such looks.
“What do my eyes see?!” another girl’s delicate voice called from behind. All of them turned around to face the person who had just called and Akemi instantly freed herself from Lily’s walkman so that she accidentally pulled out the girl’s earplug and darted to yet another friend of hers. “Hello Sakura!” she called out and hugged the girl. “Hello Akemi, I am glad to see you!”, Sakura replied and smiled. After she had let go of the girl Akemi lead her closer and introduced her to Kiyoko.

“It is good to hear that our dear Akemi got a new room-mate. This way we at least do not have to worry!” was Sakura´s first reaction after she had talked to Kiyoko for a little while. “What do you mean ‘worry’? “ Akemi was facing Sakura and waited for an answer. //As if anyone had to worry about me…// “To take care that you are not going to do anything stupid.”, Lily replied with sudden severity. Kiyoko attended this scene with interest. What bemused her a bit was Akemi´s vexed expression. “What do you mean, Lily?”
“You know exactly what we´re talking about!” Akemi did not know what to make of this. She was not exactly sure what her friends were referring to, or was she? She gasped mentally when she realized into what direction her thoughts were drifting. Quickly she shook her head and forced a smile. “I am sorry, but I do not understand. You really do not have to worry about me…”
Sakura and Lily exchanged meaningful looks and sighed both. Kiyoko dismissed this weird conversation with a shrug, for she could not make anything out of it, though she would have been interested to know. “Alright.” Sakura gave in, “Just as you like, Mrs. Akemi!” Akemi pulled a face to show her disapproval and then everyone went back to normal. Lily put the earplug back into her ear and mentioned at the same time that she had to give her friend in “Down Town” a ring, an urgent one. She was just about to go when she turned around again and looked first at Akemi, then at Kiyoko. “Before the two of you continue to explore the school building I have to tell you something important, Kiyoko. The most important thing actually. Not officially, but it is.” Kiyoko frowned and looked to Akemi. Lily smiled knowingly. “You may do anything here. No rules or restrictions but one. One thing you must never do.” “And what would that be?” “NEVER EVER fall in love.” Lily pointed out, smiled another one of her charming smiles and walked away. Kiyoko had to smile. Lily was an extraordinary person with an extraordinary personality. Sakura was looking after her as well and forced herself to smile. “When you are showing her around I am going to help you!” Akemi nodded. “Alright. I hope you do not have any appointment with the student magazine. Is there any interesting news, by the way?” she asked while the three of them were walking through the corridors again. Sakura, who was walking behind her, shook her head. “No, I do not think so. And I do not have any appointments today, as far as I know.” “Where are we going now?” Kiyoko piped up. For a moment Akemi just stared at Kiyoko. It was clear that she had been engrossed in her thoughts. Something was clearly bothering her.
But then her usual grin returned and she said airily: “To the school ground. There are the most of the students at this time I suppose. Afterwards we will go to the sports hall, then to the actual school building and in the end I will show you the grounds surrounding the school.”
“I see.” Kiyoko gave a short smile and went on looking around. “This way we can introduce some more people from my class to you.”, Sakura, who had caught up with them, said. “And if you have any kind of question you can ask me, I will be glad to help.”, she added.
“What did Lily mean by : ‘never fall in love’ ?” Akemi looked up and it was plain to see that she did feel like answering that question, so Sakura answered instead. “Well, surely you have seen Kozue yet, right?” “Of course, it was her who had brought Kiyoko into my room!” Akemi threw in angrily, but more because of the memory of the Headmistress. “Well, the school had been separated into two parts not long ago, A residential school for boys, and one for girls, everything strictly unconnected of course. Back then Kozue and her male colleague Komada had been headmistress and headmaster already. Then 25 years ago the schools had been combined and became the Muzukashii, but because of their weird spleen”, Sakura made a suiting gesture, “they are obsessed with preventing any kind of contact between boys and girls. They say, it would just keep our minds from studying.” Kiyoko looked at her. “How stupid is that? I am of another opinion here!” Sakura looked back at her interested, while they were still walking down the corridor. “Well, let’s say it this way”, Kiyoko said with a smile, “I believe in true love.” “How cute.” ,was all Sakura said to that statement. Akemi looked first a little bit surprised at Kiyoko, then she smiled. “True love”, she said with a sigh, “it must be wonderful to find it. Love that overcomes anything… I wish I had someone to share my life with, someone who is there for me.” She sighed again. “Why has everything to be so complicated for me…”
Kiyoko smiled dreamily, listening to Akemi´s implementations about love. “Yeahh, it must be like Heaven to found your true love..” A moment of silence. “What do you mean?” she asked puzzled when she noticed what Akemi had said last. “Somehow always the wrong guys fall for me..not to mention my luck to fall for the wrong ones.” “Come one, it is not THAT bad.”, Sakura just said. Adressing Kiyoko she said: ”Our dear Akemi is in love.” Sakura smiled slightly. “And what is so bad about this?”, Kiyoko asked obviously confused. “Nothing actually.” Akemi just walked on in silence. She did not feel like discussing things like that at all now. Kiyoko looked at her for a while until she decided to go deeper into that matter, for she was convinced that you could improve a lot by talking about things. “Akemi, are you heartbroken?” she asked in an intimate tone, as if they´ve been friends for ages. Kiyoko considered herself more than trustworthy in that regard. “You can tell me, I will keep it silent as a grave, I promise!” “You do not know this school, the walls are having ears here.” Akemi answered back defensively, and Kiyoko automatically thought of Sakura, who was the one in charge to pass on news. But Sakura made a gesture that meant her mouth was sealed. “I know we have known each other for only two hours yet, but I swear I will keep it to myself. I want to help you!” Kiyoko started her second try, “So: are you heartbroken?” “Well..I would not describe it as being heartbroken..”, Akemi began, “But the longer I think about it, the more I am sure you are right. I am heartbroken.” Kiyoko made a solemn face. “Hm..”, she said, “I suppose when we are done exploring the school building and we have spent some time together we could talk about that more elaborately. I want to help you, but I do not want to press you with it.” Akemi smiled without wanting to. “You sound like a shrink, but thank you anyway.” “Don´t hang your head, it is not worth it – although I would not really know.” Kiyoko replied softly. “This is the last thing I would do!” Akemi protested confidently, “The very last thing!” This made Kiyko as well as Sakura smile. “This reminds me of a song!” Sakura threw in and started to snip her fingers, “Maybe you two know it!”

Akemi grinned and exchanged a look with her new room mate. Both started walking again while Sakura linked arms with Akemi on her left and Kiyoko on the right side. Then all three of them sang together on their way to the schoolyard.

A short time later they arrived at the schoolyard. “Well…we are probably going to spend a lot of time here. Kozue always has a big problem when she is not able to have an eye on us. To be more precise: If she cannot control us, she is not happy.” Said Akemi when they entered the schoolyard. Sakura, who had spotted some of her friends, said goodbye to them with the words: “I am sure you will get along alone very well.” Kiyoko looked around with interest. Akemi just wanted to explain a few more things to her and introduce her to some more friends when suddenly a voice came from behind. “Akemi, mon cherié. How lovely to see you ´ere.”
