Gull
The crew of the Falcon was having dinner below deck. What suddenly caught the men\'s attention was the presence of Gull as he came over and sat at one of the tables. The room became very quiet as the others stopped talking and stared at Gull.
Gull stared back at the crew. \"Something wrong?\" he asked.
\"You tell us,\" said Crow. \"I can\'t remember the last time any of us saw you eat here. You always dine with Captain Hawk.\"
Gull did not reply. He poked at his food with his fork.
\"Not tonight,\" said Gull. \"He\'s having a private dinner with that Martin fellow we captured.\"
\"Captured?\" Crow roared with laughter and gave Gull a hearty punch on the arm. \"He doesn\'t seem like a captive the way the captain\'s been treating him. He even made you give Martin back his clothes!\"
Gull stood up and glared at Crow. \"Shut your face or I\'ll shut it for you!\"
\"Hey, now, there\'s no need to be like that!\" said Crow. \"Struck a nerve, did I? What\'s the matter, Gull? Has Captain Hawk got himself a new pretty boy to take your place? That Martin fellow is a head-turner, you have to admit.\"
\"It ain\'t just his looks, Crow,\" said Pelican. \"It\'s the way that Martin fellow carries himself. Strong and brave. He never seemed to be even the tiniest bit afraid when we took over his boat.\"
\"That\'s true,\" said Crow. \"I\'ll never forget how he just calmly stood there naked with Gull pointing that sword at him. Didn\'t even flinch.\"
\"No wonder the captain\'s taken such a liking to him,\" said Pelican.
\"Shut up! All of you, just shut up!\" shouted Gull. He glared and looked around. They were all laughing. Gull stormed out of the room. He was no longer hungry.
\"Was it something we said?\" Crow called out toward Gull. But Gull kept going and did not look back. He could still hear the laughter of his crew mates as he climbed up the steps to go above deck.
Gull stood by the railing and stared out to sea. He was surprised and hurt when Captain Hawk had told him earlier to join the rest of the crew for dinner because Martin was to be dining alone with the captain.
\"I want to recruit this remarkable young fellow, and I can do that best without any distractions,\" the captain had said. \"I\'ll see you in the morning, Gull.\"
That last part hurt Gull.
\"He\'ll see me in the morning?\" Gull thought to himself.
He felt like he had been kicked in the stomach.
\"But the captain has always wanted me to share his bed after dinner,\" thought Gull. \"We\'ve been sleeping together every night for the past three years.\"
He pictured in his mind the captain and that Martin fellow in bed together.
\"Blast that Martin!\" Gull muttered to himself. \"I should have run my sword right through him before the captain stopped me!\"
Later when the pirate crew climbed into their hammocks they were again surprised to see Gull in their midst.
He walked over to the hammock that had been assigned to him. It was filled with clothes.
\"Whose clothes are these? I want these out of my hammock immediately!\" shouted Gull.
\"But you never use your hammock, Gull,\" said Pelican. \"You always sleep with the captain.\"
Gull growled as he angrily threw the clothes out of his hammock. He climbed in and tried to go to sleep. But he was troubled by images in his mind of Captain Hawk and Martin spending the night together.
The others settled down to sleep, but most of them kept peeking over to watch Gull as he tossed and turned in his hammock. His stomach began to growl.
\"Damn,\" he muttered to himself. He wished he had eaten his dinner earlier. The galley was closed for the night.
