The drums started up, smooth and steady, with Jack following close behind on the bass and Shawn keeping the rhythm on guitar.
He passed Lily a look and started the lyrics.

“Baby here I am
I’m the man on the scene
I can give you what you want
But you gotta come home with me
I have got some good old lovin’
And I got some more in store
When I get through throwin’ it on you
You gotta’ come back for more
Boys and things that come by the dozen
That ain’t nothin’ but drugstore lovin’
Hey little thing let me light your candle
’Cause mama I’m sure hard to handle, now,
Gets around
Action speaks louder than words
And I’m a man of great experience
I know you’ve got another man
But I can love you better than him”
-
Her eyes shot to his, finding him watching her, his look fierce, before he closed his eyes, getting into the groove of the song.
-
Take my hand don’t be afraid
I’m gonna prove every word I say
I’m advertising love for free
So you can place your ad with me
Boys come along a dime by the dozen
That ain’t nothing but ten cent lovin’
Hey little thing let me light your candle
’Cause mama I’m sure hard to handle, now,
Gets around
Yeah, hard to handle, now
Baby here I am
The man on your scene
I can give you what you want
But you gotta come home with me
I have got some good old lovin’
And I got some more in store
When I get through throwin’ on you
You gotta’ come back for more
Boys that come along a dime by the dozen
That ain’t nothin’ but drugstore lovin’
Hey little thing let me light your candle
’cause mama I’m sure hard to handle, now,
Gets around
Hard, hard to handle, now.”

The solo was bluesy and smooth, in contrast with the rough undertones of the song, as Shawn’s fingers flew over the frets. But she didn’t care what her brother was doing at that moment.
Sebastian had his eyes closed and his lips were parted and he was swaying sensually to the beat, making Lily swallow hard so she wouldn’t choke on the lump in her throat.
His bright blue eyes opened and looked directly into hers as he sang the next chorus.

“Boys and things that come by the dozen
That ain’t nothin’ but ten cent lovin’
Hey little thing let me light your candle
’cause mama I’m sure hard to handle, now,
Gets around
Yeah, so hard to handle, now
Oh, yeah
Baby, good lovin’
Baby, baby, oh good lovin’
I need good lovin’
I gotta have it, oh yeah”
-
Lily crossed her arms over her breasts defensively and pursed her lips. She got the point, loud and clear, but some people didn’t have the luxury of marrying for love.
She turned and left them to their rehearsal, seating herself behind her computer desk. She buried her face in her hands with a sigh, then straightened and booted up her PC.
Her newest book was coming along quickly and she buried herself in it. Shawn was at her door calling her for dinner before she realized the time.
She closed her word processor and got up, making her way to the dinner table. Dinner was a silent, tense affair for Lily, except for Shawn’s mindless chatter. The phone rang afterwards and Lily picked it up.
“Hey, honey.”
She sighed, plastering on a smile. “Hi, Tom.” She seated herself in the chair beside the phone, tucking her legs up under herself.
“I just got off the phone with the caterers and we have a problem.”
Her shoulders slumped. Not another one. They’d gone through three caterers, four limo services, and two florists. The dressmaker’s shop had caught fire, incinerating her first dress before they put it out.
“What’s wrong now?” She had the urge to laugh frantically.
“Uh, well, the health department is investigating them for a sudden case of food poisoning.”
Lily cursed loudly.
“Honey, don’t swear. It’s unladylike.”
Lily sighed angrily. “What are we supposed to do now?”
“Relax. We’ll get your mother and sisters to cook. Or we can go to the city and find someone to come and do it.”
“So they can get flooded out? Or bombed? Or how about the plague? What next?” Her voice had raised to a hysterical pitch.
“I’ll talk to your mother in Bellemont. She and your sisters can to it.”
Lily rubbed her temple with her free hand, fearing a migraine. “Sherry is at State, Casey is in the Middle East doing a story and Hilary is almost nine months pregnant.”
She heard an irritated sound come from the other end. “I see your point.”
“I’ll ask Shawn who caters their album release parties.”
“Lily,” his voice lowered, “those people could be disreputable.”
She had to clench her teeth shut tight to keep from starting an argument with him. “I’ll take care of it, okay.”
“All right, honey. Goodbye.”
She hung up without a word and stomped towards her brother’s room. He was stretched out on the bed in a pair of jeans, his long, curly chestnut hair was spread out over the bed.
“Hey, lazybones, it’s not even seven o’clock yet, so get up. I need to talk to you.” She nudged his side with her knee and sat down beside him when he shifted to his side.
“What’s up?”
“I need a caterer for the wedding.”
His eyebrows shot heavenward and smirk tilted his mouth. “Another one?”
She blinked at him. “It’s not funny.”
His smirk turned to a smile. “I’m not laughing.”
She looked at him, disbelieving, a brow lifted.
He chuckled. “You know I don’t like Tom, Lil’. Mom and Dad like him, but he’s too uptight.”
Her arms crossed. “He’s not uptight, Shawn, he’s respectable,” she defended.
Shawn nodded. “Like Mom and Dad.”
Shawn didn’t get along with their parents. They weren’t very musical and tended to be terribly critical. They wanted him to be a lawyer.
“Look, Tom aside. I need a caterer.”
Shawn thought on it a minute. “I’m not for him. Let’s just get that out in the open right now.”
Lily flashed him a brilliant smile and kissed him on the cheek. “Thank you.” She headed back to her office with a smile on her face.
Now, if only she could figure out how to get Sebastian out of her head.
