Chapter two –

“LADISLAO,” the wind whispered to me in a dream. My lover had a name……

He was a reflection of the night, dark with hints of sparkling starlight reflected in his fathomless blue eyes. He was garbed from the toes of his knee boots to the flowing tresses upon his head, in unrelieved black. Like a murder of crows, he descended upon me and I knew at once it was HIM. The one for whom I was created.

I was unafraid, for I had been taught and truly believed that darkness did not indicate evil.

Nor did he find me an untried maiden. I had partaken in the Great Rite for many summers and I knew the pleasure of both men and women. This knowledge was pleasing to him. Not only did he have a great appetite for life, but for women as well. I was soon to learn that he enjoyed sharing himself with as many as three women at once, and did so many times before me.

“Hello again, my beloved,” were his first words to me and I admit that I was at once confused…did I know him already?

“Only in your dreams, star-eyed one,” he said to me. “I have known you in many of your lives. I have enjoyed watching your spirit grow and your soul mature to divine perfection. Now is the time for us to be forever one.”

I was stunned and felt naked and vulnerable after hearing his words. How had I not known this? What had my ancestral memory kept from me?

I gathered my wits about me like a cloak and walked regally up to him. My eyes feasted on the power before me. It was if he too were naked before me and it was my turn to play the game he had started.

“How could I have known my dreams were real, Ladislao? Was I, in each life, as I appear to you now?” I asked, “And were you as you are now?”

“Oh, my precious heart, if you only knew how long I have waited for you to be ready. I have sailed across the very oceans of time for you,” he said.

I looked around me and the fog was so thick that I thought the world I had known had just disappeared, leaving me with my destiny. We were alone. In a place that was not a place and in a time that was not a time.

I closed the small distance between us and raised my hand. I placed my fingertips upon his mouth. His lips were soft and warm, his breath caressing my knuckles. I looked into his eyes and saw my new life reflected there.
