Prologue
Prologue:
A wizened and white haired crone and a black haired beauty with strange fiery purple eyes peered into a pool of water, scared of what they might see yet more terrified to turn their gaze away.
‘Come to me,’ He said, repeating the words that had drawn the young girls to him, his hands held out, beckoning the two silver haired children towards him.
‘Come to me now,’ the voice was guttural and deep and seemed to echo around the starlit clearing. The red moon glared down on them, seeming offended by what was happening in the world of mortals below. The girls shuffled forward a few steps uncertainly, then stopped, staring at the black shadow with the great unblinking red eyes. They shuddered and stood together, twins.
‘What do you want with us?’ One asked, terrified as the monster moved towards them, his hands still held out in hollowness.
‘I want to give to you both what you have earned. I offer you a new life, a new world!’ He said as he bowed to them, once each, a surprisingly elegant motion, and swept his hands closer to them. At the same time, they saw the sickly rust coloured blood smeared on them and wondered in their joint mind if it was his or some sick vision of theirs.
They took a sharp breath.
‘Come to me. I will lead you both.’
‘To… where?’ The one who had asked the first question queried, voice quivering… uncertainty, not fear, she reasoned to them both.
‘To where you both have always wished to be.’
They shivered again and both felt their hands twitch, striving to reach out to his, to grasp the smeared hands with their rusty blood. To smear their own hands on it and laugh at this ugly world.
‘I know you. Does a hawk yearn for the wind? Does a fish yearn for the water? I can see it in both your eyes,’ His hands still out, beckoning to them to take them, forget everything. ‘Come to me.’
The girls still hesitated.
‘She has swamped your life and you are drowning. Renounce her.’
The crone moaned in disgust and fear. The girls couldn’t do it. They had sworn their lives to help people, they were healers, and they couldn’t become destroyers.
The black haired woman beside her clutched her in fear and whispered comforting words into an ear half deaf in age.
‘You know I speak the truth, you want to help me. You want me to save your people from her power,’ He smiled again, a lifting of shadow lips over snake teeth made of ivory. ‘Come to me now. There is nothing left for you with her. Only with me.”
They hung back, wanting to resist in some desperate way.
But they did feel swamped by disasters which how all led back to the old woman that had found them and taken them to that dark and eerie tower, just as he had said. And if they refused him? What other choice did they have? Would they… drown?
With a contented sigh they stepped forward and somewhere, in their joined heart of hearts, they felt some one wail in grief over their choice. He stood still, seeming holding his breath, as if he knew they could still refuse him and not agree to help him, to bring his forces and help over throw the crones wielding hand in Amanita, the eternal land.
They placed their hands into his and his taloned tipper fingers lightly dug into theirs and they felt no pulse in his wrist, nothing but a strange overwhelming urge to step into his body to see what it was like.
With out looking back but with tears in their eyes, from pain, fear or joy, even they did not know, they stepped up to him and through him, into the land of chaos and destruction.
The Etheric place… their place.
