Gamon fussed at him all the way back to the house where they were staying. Kel, as was usual, was alternately amused and irritated by his friend’s one-track mind.
“Are you going to waste the rest of our supplies this way? Throwing our money away at the first person who cons you into feeling sorry for him?”
“He was no liar, Ganon. He was hungry; you could see it in his eyes. Besides, family is family and he knew the names.”
“Hmph. Still,”
“Ganon.” Kel put enough force into his voice that Gamon went silent. “We have been friends these seven years, since I was fourteen. I know well what you do for me, and what I would not be without you. But I will not, cannot, change who I am in order to fulfill the prophesy. I would rather give it up than that.”
“I understand.” Gamon spoke seriously now. “I know you would give this up if you could, and I wish sometimes that I had not found you and tied you to who you were. I did not know all the demands that would be placed on your shoulders.”
“I know,” Kel said softly. “Just as I know you would take this burden from me if you could. But the point is meaningless. We have been working for years to achieve the needed ends. All we need now is the Companion to show himself. To be honest, I keep hoping it’ll be you. We don’t have much time left.”
Gamon forced a laugh. “Lucky I’m clearly stated as Guardian. A strong sexual attraction of part of the bond, remember?”
Kel smiled meaningfully at him. “Well . . .”
Gamon rolled his eyes. “Contain yourself, please.”
“I’m just looking forward to meeting the damn Companion so I can be rid of this blasted celibacy.”
Gamon looked up sharply. “Has it been b0thering you more lately?”
Kel raised both his eyebrows. “A little, yeah. Why do you ask?”
“It could bsignsign that your partner is appearing”
“I hope so, Gamon. We have only until the summer solstace.”
For a little while, Zac considered being offended be gie gift. But as his feet were already carrying him to thet nearest market stall to buy bread, his proud objection hardly seemed credible.
He inhaled the warm bread and bought more for later. It was an incredible feeling; to have his stomach full for the first time in weeks.
He refused to think of his newly-discovered cousin, other than gratitude for the gift, or acknowledge the bitter disappointment that he was leaving so soon. Losing his entire family had been a terrible blow, and he would not have minded having someone else.
Not that Kaukel was right to be his brother. He looked nothing like Zac, but was very attractive, especially when he smiled and revealed dimples in tanned cheeks. His body was hard enough and his awareness sharp enough that he must have been something like a soldier at some point.
With a start, Zac realized he was sitting there daydreaming. He tucked the money-bag into his pocket and went whistling back to the barracks.
If he had known who was there, he would run as fast as he could in the opposite direction.
Like my cliffhanger? The more reviews I get, the faster I'll post . . . (hint hint) Let me know what you like, what you hate, what you think will happen . . .etc.
