Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Anthony made his way to the bottom of the stairs. Michelle leaned herself up against the buildings stairwell and eyed him up and down. He in return eyed her.

“Don’t stare to long. You might go blind”

She smiled and raised her eyebrows slightly at her own remark. She bit her bottom lip and proceded to walk up the stone stairs. Anthony followed behind her. They both now stood standing in front of a giant wooden door. Unlike the rest of the building, the colors of the door were rk brk brown, still with the hint of yellow. Anthony reached a hand forward and realized there were no door knobs or handle. He brought his hand back to his side and turned to face Michelle. She looked back at him, rolled her eyes and sighed. She than gingerly skipped to the side and rested her back against the side of the building. She brought both her hands behind her head as she gazed up.

“In life there are many doors one can open. Weather or not we choose to open them usually depends if we like what’s on the other side. But in situations where we don’t know what we may find, should we open those doors? Some people go through life searching for that one thing that will tell them why they are here, what they’re meant to do. Some are lucky enough to find that door which will give them those answers, but some get there and find out they don’t have the key. So what are you going to do Anthony? You’ve found your door, but you don’t have your key”.

Anthony looked back at the obstacle standing in his way. He hanged his head down and slammed a fist straight into the door. The sting from the punch lasted only seconds.

“Temper, temper”

Michelle pushed herself of the wall and walked up to him. She took his hand which had struck the door. She brought it close to her face and slightly pouting she tossed her head side to side as if to examine it. She than paused and looked straight into his eyes to make sure she had his undivided attention. A sly smile crossed her face as she brought his hand closer to her mouth as she ran her tongue across it. Flicking her tongue at the end she seductively brought it back into her mouth and pulled him closer to her.

“Do you really want to know?”

“Do I want to know what?”

“Exactly. What is it that we all want to know? Why are we here, why was I born, when will I die…?”

Anthony looked at her, his face calm as ever. He momentarily looked at his hand, her saliva glistened a yellow hue, and than back at her. He pulled his hand away from her clutch and whipped it on his jeans. He took a step back and looked at the door ounce more.

“All right. Show me”

She swayed herself up to the door and leaned her back against it. She gave a slight nudge as the door creaked open. She brought her hands back to her mouth and laughed loudly as she had done before. Anthony turned slightly to look behind him. He stopped. And closed his eyes. After all there was nothing back there. Nothing for him. He opened his eyes and walked through the door as it closed behind him.

Cold. It was the first thing he felt as the door closed behind him. It felt different though. The coldness reminded him of walking through a graveyard. It reminded him of death. He looked to either side of him and saw Michelle slowly walking, swaying her hips and she held her right arm up to the wall, tracing it with her finger as she swayed along. They were in a large hallway. The yellow hue was still apparent, but darker. Anthony followed Michelle, staying a few steps back from her. Weather it was to be cautious, or maybe it was because he also enjoyed the view, the uneasiness of the situation was slowly creeping on him.

Like the road the hallway seemed endless. As they walked on Anthony noticed various notice boards. He glimpsed at some of the posters on them carrying words as: “Dance this Weekend” and “PTA meeting this Wednesday”. As he walked on there were stacks of chairs piled on top of each other and tables set aside. He was in a school. He was going to ask Michelle if she knew anything about the building they were in, but he felt she was going to just laugh at him as she seem to do. Michelle had finally stopped walking at what seem to be an elevator. Unlike the rest of the building the elevator looked tarnished and old. The greenish paint was peeling and the sides were slightly rusted. She turned around to face him and cross her arms. She leant on her right side and raised her eyebrows.

“Well lover boy…”

Her eyes gazed at his then moved to stare at the elevator button. The up and down buttons glowed a slight yellow. From the looks of it the up button was tarnished and rusted like the rest of the elevator, but the down button was clean and looked brand new. Anthony brought his hand to the buttons and paused to decide. Michelle gave a slight, but audiable laugh.

“Looks like more people chose heaven then hell…”

She laughed some more and stopped and awaited his decision. Anthony looked back and forth between the two choices. He closed his eyes and pushed. The glow of the up button shone slightly brighter through the crack of the rust. They waited for a few minutes, Anthony finger still lingering near the button, Michelle staring at him, the familiar grin on her face. The “TING” of the elevator called them, as the doors opened. Michelle took a step back and brought her hands back into her pockets.

“Ladies first”

Anthony looked at her as she laughed at her own comment. He then peered into the elevator. Unlike its exterior the elevator was clean with a matching coat of green paint.

“Well…are you going?”

Anthony turned to look at her for a moment and then turned back to the elevator. He placed a hand against the door incase it was to close and took a step forward. He than stepped fully into the confined space and turned back to look at Michelle. She stood staring at him one hand still in her pocket, the other resting on her mouth. She smiled the biggest smile he had seen her shown yet as she blew him a kiss. The elevator doors shut themselves before Anthony realized what was happening. He started punching and kicking at the door screaming Michelle’s name. He stopped when he heard her voice coming through the door.

“You said you wanted to know…”

Before Anthony could respond the elevator gave a jerk. A second latter it seemed the cable had snapped as the elevator hurtled downwards, Anthony pinned to the floor, screaming as the g forces held him down. It might have been his imagination, but he could hear Michelle’s laughter over his own screams as the elevator plummeted downwards.
