Chapter 2

My mom had been best friends with his since they were in high school so it was not much of a surprise when, after getting married, they still lived close to each other. Our fathers didn't object anymore for it was convenient for them too. Thus, I could say that he and I had been best friends since we were in our mothers' wombs.

I was born a month ahead of Yun Ho and we grew up, as expected, like brothers. Everything he'd been through, I had witnessed and all that I've experienced, he'd seen as well. I was closer with him that with my own younger brother and I believe, back then, I was also the most treasured friend he had.

Yun Ho and I, then again, were as poles apart as it could get. I was inclined towards the arts while he, the athletics. I remember one time when we were tasked by our kindergarten teacher to do a portrait of our families, I was so excited and focused on it that I didn't go out to play with him. And he, being the egoistic kid that he was, was so disappointed, he declined to share his launch with me the whole week.

For his part, Yun Ho was enrolled by his parents in Taekwondo class at the age of six and he had never stopped training since. On afternoons after his practices, he would eagerly run to my house, knock on my tinted glass window and call me to come outside. There, he'd show me his new-found routines or moves and desperately try to teach them to me.

"No, like this." he'd say, showing me the proper stance. But I never liked any of it. The young me didn't understand why one had to learn such skills, which looked more like show off abilities than a form of self defense. I merely did as I was told so I won't make him sad"¦ and so I could see his cheery smile, with his crooked teeth showing and apple cheeks whenever I did a kick correctly.

Sometimes, I would teach him to draw a fire truck or the starry sky but he'd just stare at the paper as if it was some serpent that'd bite anytime"¦ and then he'd mumble to himself.

"Boo Jae" he'd whine, "this is not even worthwhile"¦ No one will want to see my work!!"

"Yun Ho, I never complain when you teach me Taekwondo!! Now, try this color"¦" I'd answer with conviction and his silent reply was always the same- he'd pout his lips and scratch his nose but nevertheless draw his little masterpiece"¦

On weekends and summers, we loved to go to this hill and pick off fruits, both sour and seasoned, from the various trees that flourished in the area. The view from the top was amazing!!! We could see the city from below and there, we'd talk about our own aspirations.

"Boo Jae, do you see that giant eagle in the sky??" he asked while we were both lying on the grass, one lazy afternoon when we were eight. I squinted my eye to get a better look but for some reason, I saw no eagle.

"What are you talking about?" I replied.

"That eagle." He pointed to a mass of cloud just above us. "You have to use your imagination to see it"¦"

I did try to use my imagination, as he said and immediately perceived what he was trying to show me. I nodded my head to show interest.

"You see, when I grow up, I'll capture that giant eagle and ride on it so I could conquer the world. But don't you worry, I'll bring you along"¦ but you have to hold onto me tight so you won't fall, ok??" and with that, he patted my shoulders in assurance.

My innocent mind may not have fully grasped what he meant but I knew at a very young age, that my best friend desired to make it big. And he promised that he'd never leave my side no matter what"¦
